 Settings - Typical horror films are set somewhere
isolated and creepy to make sure the audience is
sucked in and feels isolated. But in the case of
paranormal horrors they are usually set in suburban
areas and isolation is simply an element in the film.
With that in mind we used the areas around the
college to try and create a similar atmosphere and
feel as a horror film.
 Technical Codes- This involves the use of camera
work. We are making sure that we use different
types of shots to gain different effects in the trailer.
We are also planning on using close-ups to convey
emotions over to the audience.
 Iconography- This involves the use of colours, lighting,
props and costumes. Colours used in the trailer help to
show the mood of the scene, so using dark colours will tell
the audience it is not a happy mood. The use of lighting is
low key and motivated will help to add tension. Props and
costume allow the audience to understand the narrative
a lot more and helps to make the film look more natural
and realistic. It also helps identify the characters and give
us brief information about them by they way they dress.
 Themes- For out idea we wanted to concentrated on the
‘Good vs Evil’ theme as that follows typical conventions
with the horror genre. We show this through our narrative
and the actions the protagonist and antagonist in the
trailer.
 Our horror trailer fits perfectly within Todorov’s theory of
the ‘Classic Hollywood Narrative’. Our proposed idea
follow the typical narrative structures as it starts with an
equilibrium and continues to follow the typical horror
narrative convention. Our idea does follow the typical
character types proposed by Propp. As we have a hero
and a villain but we also have a helper who is the
Doctor.
 The villain (Simon) in our narrative only
wants revenge for his death. The final girl is
represented as the heroin who fights back
against evil, but may have to pay the
ultimate price to do so, this goes against
most horror films, although this does play in
to Clovers final girl theory as the female is
the one to be the fighter and survivor .
 The helper, the Doctor, is the one who
finally helps to bring out the truth as well as
help out the heroin when no one else did.
 The horror film ‘The Woman in Black’ heavily invested in their
advertising camping. The Woman in Black was more of an
anomaly as most horror films don't use a lot of advertising
sources when trying to make their film well known as it usually
doesn’t apply to the masses.
 Most horror films release their trailer as the main way of
advertising their film and not many other advertising tools in an
attempt make as much as profit possible.
 Our findings on our questionnaires found that majority of people
go to the cinema to watch newly released films.
 Most participants like gory films and would pay to go and see
one on their release date. Most of of our participants used social
networking and found out about new released films via the
internet. This helps to enforce the Idea of having the trailer put
online for people to see it but having a poster and the film ne
featured on a magazine will only increase the amount of people
who will see the film.
