Corpse Bride opening scene analysis
The sequence starts off by showing the institution company’s name, being warner
brothers. The motion picture starts with a close up shot of a desk and hands that open
up an empty book. The screen then changes to a picture of a cartoon kid and dog in a
picture frame and we are told that this is a Tim Burton production early on as this is
likely to engage the audience as he is rather famous for strange excellent films. We then
see another close up shot of a hand picking up a feather pen from an ink pot. We watch
the hand, who we still do not know who it belongs to, this adds tension, draw a swirl on
a page in the book from beforehand. Here we are told that Johnny Depp is in the film,
this will bring more audience to watch the film as he is a star. It’s found out that the
swirl was the start of a drawing of a butterfly. We then see the man how the hands
belong to, we could then predict that he is the main character due to being the first
person that we see. He actually has the butterfly in a jar in his room, the room and
everything in the set has a grey colouring to it, including the cartoon himself.
The man then opens his window and sets the butterfly free; in this moment the music
increases in volume and layers. The music is a fantasy yet creepy feel to it.
The camera then follows the butterfly in the same motion as it moves around a dull
looking town. Then the sound of a clock is heard as the butterfly flies past one. Stopping
at an old man sweeping his front door step to the same tune as the clocks. Then heard is
a man coughing his guts up, that leads to two men standing there smoking whist
copping up fish on the streets as cat lurks around them suggesting that this film is set in
the olden days when people used to do their food in the streets and judging by the
clothes worn by characters you get this vibe as well.
The town then soon becomes much busier as more people join to walk around and great
each other, the sound of chattering in the background gets louder over the background
music. Then a horse and carriage goes past a grumpy old man who swats the butterfly
away that then leads the camera to change who leads it and it follows the carriage to the
front door step of the main characters house again.
