Our radio trailer for the film Rendezvous provides key information about the film in under 30 seconds. It begins with a quote from the main character Isaac setting up his journey of being alone on Valentine's Days. Music and sound effects from the film are used throughout. The narrator provides the release date and teases Isaac's pursuit of love. Short dialogue clips introduce characters and hint at the romantic plotline. Critical Evaluation Question #2
1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN
PRODUCT AND THE ANCILLARY
TEXTS?
RENDEZVOUS
2. OUR FILM
⢠Our main media product was our short-film,
Rendezvous. The short film is a romantic comedy that
was targeted towards young adults/teens. Although
the film was aimed at teens we decided to give it a
certificate of PG as there isnât any violence or sexual
themes presented in our film. Rendezvous was
inspired by many different films, we took different
conventions from different films. For example, our
storyline challenged conventions of a romantic
comedy film, we were inspired to do this from the
film 500 Days of Summer (2009).
3. AIMS OF OUR PROJECT
The âUses and Gratificationsâ theory can be applied to convey what our
aims were for our media product. The film Rendezvous was created to
entertain our target audience with the appropriate conventions. We
aimed to ensure that our film would stay in reality as much as possible.
This was done by creating a story around a college with the people that
you would create a range of relationships with in that place. Throughout
the film we integrated both comedic and romantic conventions to keep
to the genre and to continue to entertain the audience.
4. CREATING A FILM POSTER
⢠We made a film poster for
Rendezvous individually
before creating a final
poster. After making our
individual posters we all
looked at each otherâs
together and picked out
aspects that we liked. Once
we had done this we
created a final poster
together.
5. ANALYSING ANOTHER FILM POSTER
Purpose
The purpose of this film poster is to
advertise the film. It also shows the actors
and director of the film. The overall purpose
it to entice an audience to watch the film.
Colours
The colours used in this film poster are mainly
black, pink and white. These are statement colours
and they can often be associated with romance.
Pink signifies love and romance, black can signify
the challenges a couple face throughout the film.
White signifies innocence.
Key Images
The key image in the poster is the couple and
the baby shoes the woman is holding. This infers
that the couple will have a baby but the male
character is unaware of the news.
Realistic
This poster isnât very realistic as the couple are
against a white background.
Text Colour
The colour of the text is black and pink, this contrasts
against the white background. This is done so that the
writing can be easily read as well as keeping with the
theme of romance.
Tag Line
The tag line brings in the comedic side of the film which
is a rom-com. This tag line hints what the storyline will
be. It also addresses the target audience.
Layout
The layout of this film poster is clever as it addresses the
challenge the two main characters will experience later on
in the film. The title of the film âThe Back-Up Planâ is placed
in the middle of the two characters.
6. OUR FINAL FILM POSTER CHOICES
These two posters are
our final film poster
ideas. Both of these
posters have similar
aspects but have
different feelings. The
poster on the left
suits the style of our
film and the genre
more. We decided to
ask our target
audience which
poster they thought
would suit our film
more

9. FEEDBACK
⢠We decided to ask our target audience which poster they preferred.
⢠The large majority of people we asked said they preferred this film poster
⢠However, they also said that they would like to see some changes.
⢠For example, some people said the poster was quite busy and they would
like to see the poster tidied up slightly.
⢠Another person said that the image of Harriet would look better if it was
changed to a different picture. They said it would look better if her facial
expressions were slightly different so that she would be looking towards
Isaac in a disgruntled expression.
⢠Others said they did like the other film poster but they didnât think it suit
our genre as much as the film poster with both of the main characters on
it.
11. HOW DID WE PRODUCE IT?
⢠The first draft of our film poster was created on Microsoft Publisher. We did this as we
didnât really know how to use Photoshop too well therefore we used a software we
recognised well.
⢠However after creating the first draft of our poster we realised it didnât look as professional
as we wanted it to. We decided to try using Photoshop to create a new draft of our poster.
The new draft of the poster suited our film more but when we asked people what they
thought of the poster they said they preferred aspects of the first draft.
⢠This is when we decided to look at our poster and take aspects of the first and second draft
to create a final draft of our poster. We created the final draft on Photoshop.
12. ANALYSIS OF OUR FILM POSTER

13. ANALYSIS OF OUR
FILM POSTER
⢠After looking at both of our final film poster choices
we decided to merge them to create our final film
poster. We did this as we liked different aspects from
each poster.
⢠From the first draft of our film poster we liked how the
pictures of the main characters looked as they came
from the film which created synergy. However, we
decided to add a different photo of Harriet as we
didn't feel like it showed the correct facial expressions
according to our storyline. Therefore we added
another photo that would showcase the correct
feelings and facial expressions.
⢠From our second draft of our film poster, which was
made on photoshop, we preferred the titles as they
looked similar to the title sequence in our film.
Draft 1 Draft 2
Final Draft
14. ANALYSIS OF OUR FILM POSTER
⢠As you can tell from the two different choices of film posters we included both main
characters in the first draft whilst in the second draft we only added Isaac. Due to our film
been a Romantic Comedy we decided that for our final draft we would include both
characters would be on the poster. Although our storyline doesn't conform to the typical
rom com storyline, we still thought it was fitting to include both characters.
15. HOW DOES OUR FILM POSTER REFLECT OUR FILM?
Our film is a Romantic-Comedy aimed towards teenagers. We wanted the poster to be
fun to highlight the youth in the film. The main character, Isaac, looks like he is in a
daze on the front cover whilst the other main character, Harriet, looks disinterested. This
gives the audience a teaser of the film and the storyline. The background of the poster
is love hearts, this is to represent love and romance in the film, which alludes to the
genre of the film. Furthermore, small cartoons of popcorn and cinema tickets were
added onto the poster to represent a scene of the film in which Isaac meets Harriet at
the cinema for their âplannedâ date but it doesnât turn out to be all what Isaac expected.
The film poster was made to be bright and colourful to reflect the lightheartedness of
our chosen genre.
16. FILM AND POSTER
SYNERGY
⢠In multiple scenes
throughout the short film a
poster can be seen.
Although the poster and
the film poster cannot be
classed as synergy. The two
posters look somewhat
alike with a small cinema
ticket appearing on both
posters to foreshadow/hint
at the cinema scene in the
film.
17. FILM AND POSTER SYNERGY
⢠We decided to have the title sequence and the title
on the film poster the same. This was done for the
audience to recognise the main prop throughout the
film as well as the most common method of
communication between the two main characters.
18. FILM AND
POSTER SYNERGY
⢠We decided to use this picture
in our film poster as it allows the
audience to connect the film
poster to the audience. Just like
in the scene, the picture of Isaac
is in the centre to show that he is
the main character and that the
storyline will revolve around him.
19. FILM POSTER
SIMILARITIES
⢠Our film poster has some aspects that
are similar
to Happythankyoumoreplease's
film poster. This similar aspect is the font
used. The font from both film posters is
very cartoon like. For our film
specifically the poster suits our chosen
genre and target audience of
teenagers. However, it is
noticeable that the other film poster has a
different target audience than our film.
Our film is aimed at teenagers whilst the
other film poster seems like it is aimed
at young adults. This is why our film
poster doesn't have many similarities
with the other film poster.
20. FILM POSTER SIMILARITIES
⢠Our film poster has some aspects that are similar to
the Slumdog Millionaireâs poster. These aspects are
the background. In the background of the Slumdog
Millionaire's poster there is confetti, in our film
poster background there is love hearts. These two
backgrounds foreshadow the storyline of both films.
21. CONFORMING TO OR CHALLENGING
CONVENTIONS â FILM POSTER
⢠On the front of the poster there is an image of the main character. For the majority of film posters there is an image
of the main character. We wanted to include this image in order to introduce the main character to the audience.
⢠In the final draft of our film poster we decided to leave the background white. This is common
in Romantic Comedy films. We didnât want the background to be too distracting and take the focus away from
the main character.
⢠We included credits at the bottom of the poster just like every film poster.
Conforming to?
Challenging?
⢠Although we did include an image of the main character Romantic Comedy films usually include two characters on
the poster to foreshadow and give the audience hints. Rather than having both Isaac and Harriet on the poster we
decided just to have Isaac as our storyline flips conventions.
⢠The font on our film poster is quite cartoon like. This isn't a convention of romantic comedy posters. Usually the font
is quite tall and thin.
⢠The image of the main character is a cartoon. Just like the font, the cartoon image of a character isn't usually
apparent in this genre's film poster. We did this as our target audience is teens.
22. RADIO TRAILER
⢠The radio trailer for a film only lasts for around 30 seconds but during that time
many pieces of information and sounds are introduced to a potential audience.
There will be the perfect balance of dialogue from the film, information about it,
release dates and reviews whilst having music building up to the name reveal at
the end of the trailer.
⢠Key aspects:
⢠Quotes from the film
⢠Music from the film
⢠Sound effects from the film
⢠Voice over to provide listeners with release information
23. RADIO TRAILER ANALYSIS
⢠00:00-07 seconds = The radio trailer
starts with a short monologue from the
main character Isaac. He says âIâve
watched 17 valentines days pass and
everyone one of them Iâve been tragically
alone. But this year I hope will be
differentâ. We decided to include this
short monologue at the start of the radio
trailer in order to introduce the audience
to Isaac as he is the main character. The
monologue also hints at and foreshadows
the storyline of the film.
24. RADIO TRAILER ANALYSIS
⢠00:07-11 seconds = Music that is in the credit sequence of the film begins to fade
in. We used the name music to ensure both our film and radio trailer linked. The
song is called Need a Friend by Siine and matches our chosen genre very well.
The lyrics of the song also correlates with our storyline.
⢠At the same time as the music begins to fade in, the sound of the school bell can
be heard. This brings the setting of the film to the audiences attention and also
begins to target our target audience of teenagers. This sound effect is also
present in our film therefore we decided to use them in the radio trailer to link
both the film and the trailer.
25. RADIO TRAILER ANALYSIS
⢠00:11-15 seconds = The narrator of the trailer begins to officially introduce the film to radio
listeners. The narrator begins with a teaser for the release date with using the term âThis
summerâ. He then follows it up with âfollow Isaacâs journeyâ. By introducing the film around
Isaacâs journey it prepares the audience for the plot of the film and who the story is based
around. The word journey implies that Isaac will have ups and downs throughout the film which
is a convention of the genre Romantic Comedy.
⢠00:16-20 seconds = The first pieces of dialogue from the film are included into the film. These
pieces of dialogue introduces new characters that listeners havenât heard from yet. As well as
introducing new characters the dialogue begins to showcase relationships between characters.
In the first lines of dialogue, listeners can hear a female asking where âLukeâ is. The boy replies
with âI think heâs ill missâ. This short piece of dialogue introduces two relationships to listeners â
teacher and students as well as two friends. The teacher then goes on to say âlooks like youâve
got an admirerâ this piece of dialogue begins to introduce romantic conventions into the trailer.
26. RADIO TRAILER ANALYSIS
⢠00:20-22 seconds = The narrator continues to describe the film to radio listeners
that are not familiar with the film. He continues from his last part of his speech
with âon his pursuit for loveâ. This is an immediate indication for the audience that
the film is of the romance genre.
⢠00:22-30 seconds = More dialogue from the film is added into the trailer to
continue to tease the audience. Once again another character is introduced and
she reveals more of the storyline to the listeners. More romantic conventions are
added into the film through this dialogue âhad my eye on your for a while nowâ
and âbe my valentineâ.
27. RADIO TRAILER ANALYSIS
⢠00:30-34 seconds = The music that remains in the background begins to get
increasingly louder until the narrator continues to describe the storyline of the film.
The narrator asks a rhetorical question âWill he ever find his true match?â. By asking
this question it begins to make the audience wonder if Isaac will end up with the
person he wants to be with in the end.
⢠00:40-47 seconds = The narrator begins to round off the trailer with crediting the
music and the actors in the film. Once the narrator has credited an actor we decided
to add dialogue from that specific character into the trailer. This distinguishes the
characters voices and their names in order for the audience to remember them if they
ever did see the film.
⢠00:50-1:00 = The film name is announced with the narrator finishing the trailer with
the website for the film as well as information about sneak peaks.
28. HOW DOES OUR RADIO TRAILER REFLECT OUR
INTENTIONS FOR THE FILM?
In a similar fashion to our film we made sure that our radio trailer would be bright
and happy. This is the use of synergy, in order to advertise our film. Not only would
this link to our short film but also our genre, Romantic Comedy. This will
successfully advertise our film. The whole point of a radio trailer is to advertise a film
and in order to do this the radio must reflect the film completely as the future
audience will want to know what the film is about in a very short summary. We have
taken dialogue from the film and included it in the trailer to tease the audience. The
use of dialogue entices the audience and makes them want to know more about the
film. We also used music and sound effects from the film to connect both the trailer
and the film.
29. HOW EFFECTIVE WERE THE COMBINATION OF OUR
ANCILLARY TEXTS AND FINAL PRODUCT OVERALL?
I believe the combination of our ancillary texts and final product were overall
extremely effective as we were able to coordinate our radio trailer, film poster
and our short film with our chosen genre in order to make it suitable and
attractive to our target audience of teens. The comedic but romantic
conventions of our film were able to entertain our audience which conforms to
the âUses and Gratificationsâ theory. Throughout the process of creating our
ancillary texts and final product we researched our chosen genre thoroughly to
ensure we didnât stray from the genre too much but we could still challenge
some conventions to an extent. I believe the combination of challenging some
conventions as well as conforming to some worked to our advantage as it had
the desired effect we hoped it would. Throughout the film poster and radio
trailer we included 'film reviews' from newspapers to further persuade the
audience to go and see the film.
