The Waste Land changed the course of poetry and all forms of expression for
good. As a benchmark of modernist poetry, T.S. Eliot s poem used World War I as
motivation and put to words the destruction of the world and the minds of so many
humans around the world. The ideas in the poem contrast the images put forth and
force the reader to feel the chaos, pessimism, confusion, and collapse of human
values that modernists know. After the war, the world was totally different and
never was the same. Eliot recognized this change and sought to create a form of art

He aimed to answer the questions of poetry s response to World War I. In T.S. Eliot s
poem, The Waste Land, two traditional and sacred images of rebirth and sanctuary,
Spring and religion, are turned upside down into eerie metaphors of death and

The first section of the poem, The Burial of the Dead, repeats the image of Spring.
Spring normally equates to life, rebirth, and renewal but T.S. Eliot gives the image
a bad connotation. This pessimistic view on Spring is similar to that of Edna St.
Vincent Millay who wrote, To what purpose, April, do you return again? ( Spring
Millay 1). Eliot opens the poem proclaiming, April is the cruellest month (Eliot 1).
With this line, he turns to pessimism, like many modernist poets, and argues that the
expectations of joy from Spring are mixing memory and desire. Eliot argues that
Spring gives hope in rebirth and regeneration which deeply hurts those who have to
deal with death. The Waste Land suggests that Spring can no longer occur due to the
total destruction of World War I. All land, infrastructure, and morality was decimated
from the bombs and the fighting that took place during the war. The ability to escape
the newly created wasteland is impossible and not even Spring can bring back the

s, the Great Depression occurred leaving millions of Americans jobless, and
Steinbeck wrote three books, In Dubious Battle, Of Mice and Men, and The
Grapes of Wrath, all about California s labor issues, which he brought to life,

Furthermore, the suspicions of The Grapes of Wrath led to questioning of
communist teachings, and eventually made Steinbeck stick to writing about the
media for war effort. With old friend, Ed Ricketts, in 1940, they sailed to the gulf
of California influencing Sea of Cortez; even though, Henning accompanied
Steinback, their marriage was already too late to fix and divorced in 1943. On
May 11th, 1948, Steinbeck s long time friend, Ed Ricketts, was hit by a train, and
devastatingly lost his life, which sadly was an addition to the divorce of his
second wife, Gwyn, sending him into a depressed state until 1948. East of Eden
was published in 1952 and dedicated to his two sons explaining his life in Salinas
and grieving with the aftermath of the divorce with Gwyn. Finally, in 1964,
Steinbeck was awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom, and by 1966, he began
writing his last book about the American race. Sadly, his health began to stop

States presented ideas and situations that had the purpose of changing a reader s
