Inflammation is a series of physiological responses to tissue injury caused by trauma or an immune response to foreign bodies. It is characterized by redness, warmth, pain, swelling and loss of function locally, and fever, leukocytosis, increased plasma proteins, malaise, nausea, anorexia, weight loss, tachycardia and tachypnea systemically. Management involves elevating the injured area, using analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, fluids, and cold compresses to promote healing through primary or secondary intention or tertiary intention for contaminated wounds.
