3. INTRODUCTION
I secured attachment at the NNPC, Jos on 15th of
March, 2023
I began my SIWES training on Monday, 13th
March, 2023 and completed my training on Friday,
25th August, 2023. The training period lasted 24
weeks and students were expected to report every
working day of the week.
4. HISTORY OF
ORGANIZATION
The Okomu Oil Palm Company Plc is a Nigeria-based company
established, initially in 1976 in Edo State, by the Federal Government
of Nigeria before becoming a PLC in 1990. The Company manages its
plantation in a transparent and sustainable manner which ensures the
ongoing performance of its activities and operations. Okomu’s
ambition is to develop responsible tropical agriculture. The principal
activities of the Company are the development of oil palm
plantation, palm, oil milling, palm kernel processing and the
development of rubber plantation. The products are palm oil, palm
kernel oil, palm kernel cake, banga (package) and rubber cup lumps.
The Company operates through three segments: The palm plantation
segment, which produces fresh fruit bunches, crude palm oil, crude
palm kernel; The rubber plantation segment, which produces latex
and rubber cake; and the palm processing segment, which renders
palm processing from the Company's mill processing equipment.
6. EXPERIENCES
GAINED
Personal Involvement and Experience Gained
During my Industrial Training (IT), I was involved in many
activities, these activities might not be discussed for time
constrained, but the following few activities will be discussed:
Car Ignition System
Engine Failures
Car Maintenance
7. Car Ignition System
The ignition coil, sometimes known as a spark
coil, helps to start a car’s engine. It’s an essential
part of the ignition system.
A car’s battery has a low voltage (12 volts), but
thousands of volts are needed to initiate the
ignition on the spark plug. The ignition coil,
which is basically a small transformer,
transforms the 12 volts from the car battery into
the thousands of volts needed. Without the
energy provided by the ignition coil, the spark
plug couldn’t create the spark that’s needed for
combustion. Without combustion, your car isn’t
going to start at all
8. How to Detect a Faulty Ignition
Coil:
1. Difficulty Starting the Engine
If you have several bad ignition coils, you could have a faulty
ignition and difficulty starting your engine. Of course, there are a
number of different problems that can make it difficult for an engine
to start, so difficulty starting the engine alone isn’t enough to
confirm an ignition coil problem.
2. Engine Misfiring or Stalling
If your engine misfires or stalls when you are idle or when you
stop suddenly or accelerate, there could be a problem with your
ignition coil.
3. Poor Fuel Economy
If you notice that your car is getting less mileage from a full
tank than usual, it could mean that you have a bad ignition coil.
This happens because, when your spark plugs aren’t getting enough
power (due to the faulty ignition coil), the system will try to
compensate by injecting more fuel.
4. Check Engine Light
The check engine light is designed to tell you that there’s
something wrong with the engine.
9. Engine Failures
Major causes of engine failure are due to Overheating, Improper
Lubrication & Detonation.
Overheating usually happens due to coolant loss that can be
a result of a bad radiator, thermostat, hose, water pump or a
faulty cooling fan. It is important to have these items
regularly inspected, serviced or replaced.
Improper Lubrication of all moving parts (pistons, rings,
bearings, bushes, shaft & gears) can cause severe damage to
your engine. Lubrication keeps moving parts (especially
pistons & shaft bearings) cool.
Detonation is caused by abnormal combustion inside the
engine, which produces excessive heat & pressure inside the
combustion chambers. Over advanced Ignition timing or fuel
with a low octane rating can create a knocking noise, also
known as “pinging”.
10. Car Maintenance
It is suggested that the vehicle owners carry out
regular and periodical checks on their vehicle, some of
which are mentioned below.
Daily Inspection: It is the responsibility of a driver or
owner of a vehicle to carry out the below checks
before starting the engine, to avoid any type of
breakdown on the road.
Check tyre pressure in all the tyres visually or by
hitting the tyre wall with the help of a stone and judge
the sound
Check the radiator’s coolant level
Check the fan belts for looseness
Check the level of engine oil
Check the windscreen, rear-view mirror and rear
window glass for their cleanliness
11. Maintenance Check-up
When one plans a long distance travel, it is necessary to
carry out routine checkup
These checkups are listed below:
Checking of oil level
Proper tension of belt
Battery for cleanliness and level of electrolyte (add only
distilled water for topping of electrolyte water)
Brakes.
Topping up of coolant, if required, in the coolant reservoir
Proper tyre inflation pressure
Air conditioning
12. Challenges faced
During my six months period of attachment, the following difficulties
were encountered.
Rejection of Application: One of the difficulties I faced during my
industrial training attachment was the fact that, various organization
rejected my application for industrial attachment.
Lack Proper Orientation: During my industrial training, difficult to do
some certain tasks(i.e, filling my log book, filling application and
writing IT report) due to lack of proper orientation.
High cost of transportation: During the course of my attachment I
faced difficulties in daily transport to the company, as where I was
residing was really far from the organization.
13. RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the Institution provide
proper orientation or a list of organisations where
one can go to for Industrial Training placement, to
serve as a guide for students.
Industrial Training Letters should be made available
more earlier so students can send applications to
companies earlier.
The Industrial Training Fund should provide funds to
students to help ease the burden of transportation
and feeding.
Companies who accept IT students should provide
safety wears and a welfare package
14. CONCLUSION
My industrial experience at Okomu Oil Palm Company Plc, has
been an interesting experience, as it has really equipped me
with the necessary knowledge and skills in various areas in
automobile maintenance and repairs. I was also able to polish a
lot of skills and acquire new skill, Due to Interactions with
different people I was able to improve my social and inter
relational skills. All these were gained due to my active
involvement in the different activities carried out by the
company.
