APPROACH TO PROBLEM SOLVING
 I learnt most works through observation and participation.
 An approach to problem solving that I observed (though certain steps are recursive) is:
1. Collect evidence;
2. Analyze evidence;
3. Locate the fault;
4. Find the cause of the fault and remedy it;
5. Rectify the fault (if different from 4);
6. Test the system to verify that repair is correct.
EXPERIENCE GAINED
 During my 26 weeks IT period at Smart-Fix, I was attached to the Mechanical/Automotive Department as a Trainee.
 Job responsibilities in the Department include:
 Lifting and supporting cars and keeping equipment and tool available for use
 Participating in engine and transmission overhauls
 Completing maintenance such as oil replacement, replacing worn-out brake pads, installing drive belt etc.
 Rectifying misfiring
 Bleeding the brake lines
And so many others. Due to time constraints, I’ll go through some of the experiences I’ve gained.
TOOLS, MACHINES, EQUIPMENT AND DEVICES
 With some of its modern facilities, Smart-Fix has been
carrying-out clean repairs and services of automobiles
in its environment; both home and away.
 Among the many tools used include the wrench, plier,
STAR scanner, crane, hydraulic jack, clamp, vice, air
pump, screw driver, air blower, etc.
 Without the right tools and equipment, repair would be
very impossible.
 I learnt how to use some simple basic concepts of
machines, levers, mechanical advantage, moments,
couple, twisting force application, etc. with the proper
application of force while using tools.

REPLACEMENT OF DRIVING SHAFT
RECTIFYING MISFIRING: Replacing spark plugs
 Using a T30 Allen Key in order to loose the ignition
coils so as to replace worn out spark plugs.
 The feeler gauge (0.08mm thickness) is used to gap
the spark plugs ground terminal to standard.
SERVICE MAINTENANCE: Replacing worn out brake pad
 Replacing brake pads. This particular wheel had a
rust in the calliper bolts so I had to apply an anti-
rust chemical to enhance easy removal of the
bolts.
CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED
 In everything we do in life, there are limitations to the extent in which we can go and which we desire to go. As
such, this twenty-six weeks Industrial Training is not an exception.
 Lack of interest of near-by companies to accept SIWES students became a big challenge to me when I was
seeking for placement close-by.
 Financial challenges set-in when I started the training but it was later catered for by the company.
 Lack of a SIWES Department assigned to train students thoroughly and uniformly has been the major cause for
conflict of responses by some staff.
CONCLUSION
 My training at Smart-Fix was a huge success accompanied with a great time of skills acquisition and new
knowledge. Among the many practical skills, I have learnt include; engine oil servicing; brake pad replacement;
alternator replacement; drive belt installation; how to participate in a successful engine and gearbox overhaul
and installation with other Mechanics; and bleeding brake lines.
 I was able to appreciate my area of discipline even more because I had the opportunity to bridge theory and
practical. I now have a wider view to the importance and relevance of Mechanical Engineers in the immediate
society and the world at large
 I have also been able to improve my communication skills
RECOMMENDATION
 All establishments that receive SIWES students should have a Department assigned to train SIWES students
more thoroughly.
 The government should provide a constitutional framework that would compel establishments to accept a certain
number of students yearly for the SIWES program.
 Allowances and some form of financial assistance should be offered to students by the company and even the
ITF allowance should be offered during their training.
 The Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Jos should provide a Mechanic/Automobile
workshop where its students can easily practice maintenance, service and general repairs.
