2. Using an Ignition Interlock Device.
Drivers going through a DUI program are
understandably stressed-out and worried about
making a mistake when using the Ignition Interlock
Device. ADS Ignition Interlock University can help by
offering the following tips and guidelines.

3. How to Use the Device:
• Pay close attention to all training when having
device installed at the Installation Center.
• Review ADS Interlock training videos at:
www.adsinterlock.com and on www.youtube.com
under “ADS Interlock”.
• Very Important: Read the User Manual and keep
in your car for reference.
4. Avoiding Positive Breath Samples:
• Don’t drink alcohol-related products prior to
driving your car!
• Remember that ingested alcohol metabolizes
slowly; what you drank last night can trigger a
violation. It’s your responsibility to give yourself
plenty of time to metabolize any alcohol before
trying to drive your car.
5. Avoiding Positive Breath Samples (cont.):
• Make note of the alcohol content on products
that you use. Some of these can trigger an alcohol
reading on the IID: Mouthwash, hand sanitizers,
hair spray, cough syrups/cold medications, some
colognes/perfumes, prescription inhalers,
painting chemicals, windshield wiper fluid, some
foods or drinks – be sure to check the ingredients.
• NOTE: You can prevent the possibility of an “environmental”
violation by rinsing your mouth with water before every test. If you
think one of these products has triggered a violation, rinse your
mouth out with water and wait 15 minutes before you take
another test.
6. Other things to remember:
• Unhooking the car’s battery can cause a violation
notice because it looks like “tampering”. Be sure
to document any work done on your car in case
the State questions this type of power loss.
• Do not shut off the vehicle if the device is asking
for a Running Retest, even if you are at your
destination. The system will still mark this as a
violation. You must take all requested Running
Retests. Do not turn off your car if the device is
asking for a breath sample.
7. Other things to remember (cont.)
• If your car stalls, turn off the key. Wait 1-2
minutes and you can try to re-start your vehicle
without submitting a breath sample.
• If a Lockout situation occurs, you will have a few
days to take your vehicle to an Installation Center
for service. If you don’t take your car for service
within this time, you will be responsible for
towing fees, as you will be Locked Out.
• Heat/Cold: Extreme heat or cold can alter the IID
readings. Before using, make sure to allow the
device to cool down/warm up before testing.
