This document provides an overview of a student's defense presentation for their engineering degree option in electro-technics. The presentation covers: welcoming the audience and asking them to silence their phones, introducing the university and department, and listing the student's name and supervisor. 4. General introduction
Importance of cars
Cars have many importance for example;
• They can be used for transportation of
people from one place to another.
• They can also be used for the delivery
of finished products from companies to
consumers.
• They are also used in sports.

5. Problem statement
What actually causes a car to stop charging?

to stop charging which

• Faulty cables from the
alternator to the battery

6. Objective of the study
• The objective of this study is to know the various electric and electronic components
responsible for the charging of a car and how each component functions.
• An objective of this work was fault detection on the charging circuit of a car.
• An objective was maintenance on the charging circuit of a car.

7. Scope and limitation of the study
This study only deals with study and maintenance of automobile battery charger. It shall on its
own way provide the advantages of study and maintenance of automobile battery charger and
the importance of some basic electronic components used. This work is limited on the charging
circuit of a car.

8. Literature review

The main function of the alternator is to generate electrical
energy that is used to charge batteries. Inside the alternator the
belt-driven rotor becomes an electromagnet when current is fed
to it. As the rotor revolves it generates a higher current in the
stator windings.

9. Methodology and internship report
To know if our car is not charging the following symptoms may be observed;
 Dim lights
 Dashboard warning concerning the alternator
 Difficulty in starting your car

10. We had to start testing all the cables leaving the alternator to the
battery and then to the dash board to see if there was current flowing
through them. It was noticed that no current was flowing through the
cables.
After carrying out a series of tests on the alternator, it was noticed that the
brushes had a fault so, we had to replace the brushes with new ones.
How do I know if my alternator brushes are bad?
Get a friend to sit in the car and increase the engine speed to just above
2000RPM. Look at the voltmeter to see if it displays an increase in volts.
Your voltmeter should display about 14volts maybe a little more if the
battery is low. If there is little or no increase in voltage your brushes
maybe bad.

11. The alternator output voltage is a crucial parameter. For most cars, the regular voltage is
considered to be from 13.8 up to 14.4V regardless of the engine operation mode and the
number of consumers that are on. The precise values are specified in a vehicle user manual.
Analysis and interpretation of results

12. Recommendations and conclusion
As recommendation I have;
 The company should provide the workers with advanced equipment so as to ease their work and save
time.
 The company should reinforce the electrical/electronic department so as to gain more deals and handle
them on time.
 The company should help empower as many youths as possible in their various domains of
specializations that is mechatronics, automobile electricity/electronics, panel beating, automobile
maintenance and mechanic works.
 Also, vehicle users should endeavor to steam their cars every day for few minutes so as to heat the
alternator and keep it operational.

13. To conclude;
The study and maintenance was quite a successful one since after applying all our various techniques
the fault on the charging system was resolved and the car performance came back to normal as
before. Thus, the client gave an upper thumb for a job well done.
