Air India was once India's largest airline with over 60% market share but is now fourth largest with 17% share. It has a debt of Rs. 40,000 crore and losses of Rs. 5,551 crore in 2009-2010, the worst in its 79-year history. Two key reasons for its financial troubles were an ill-considered merger with Indian Airlines and an order to purchase 50 long-range planes despite lacking budget.
