Major empires that ruled India include the Mauryan Empire in the 4th century BC and the Gupta Empire between the 4th-6th centuries AD. India was then invaded by various groups including Muslims and Mongols. The Mughal Empire ruled from 1526-1761. European trade with India began in the 15th century led by Portugal and later the Dutch and British established colonial rule. India gained independence from Britain in 1947 after decades of nonviolent resistance led by Gandhi and the Indian National Congress. Chandragupta Maurya was the
first ruler of the Mauryan dynasty

accounts, Chandragupta then
abdicated to become a monk.
