Anirudh Devanathan - Energy Markets and an Integrated Energy ModelANUECI
Anirudh Devanathan is a 6th year economics/law student currently doing an honors thesis focused on developing an Integrated Energy Model (IEM) for the ACT and southeast NSW region. The IEM aims to provide businesses access to opportunities in the Federal Government's Clean Energy Futures Package and provide economic benefits. Developing an effective IEM requires understanding how the energy market works in terms of supply, demand, and the National Electricity Market to balance supply and demand. The presentation seeks feedback on Devanathan's role in developing the IEM and increasing energy market literacy.

[ISGAN] IEC61850 standard: definition, benefits, challenges. How is the Osmos...ISGAN Academy
This webinar introduces the IEC61850 standard on communication protocols for intelligent electronic devices at electrical substations, and its benefits. The interoperability needs and issues are presented, as well as the IEC61850 scope and structure, its applications fields, and complementarity with other standards. It concludes on the ongoing developments within the OSMOSE project for the standard’s implementation (subject of a second webinar).

The IEC61850 is an international standard defining rules and guidelines for substation protection and automation system communication, configuration and testing, supported by a data model and a configuration language.
The IEC61850 standard provides an engineering process to allow efficient device configuration.
Osmose provides and demonstrates the required extensions for engineering process extensions to support an efficient top-down end-to-end engineering process from concept and specification to configuration.
Osmose provides recommendations for IEC61850 WG10 in order to integrate the projects developments into a future release of the standard.

Electrical Energy Storage, EES, is one of the key
technologies in the areas covered by the IEC.
EES techniques have shown unique capabilities
in coping with some critical characteristics of
electricity, for example hourly variations in demand
and price. In the near future EES will become
indispensable in emerging IEC-relevant markets in
the use of more renewable energy, to achieve CO2
reduction and for Smart Grids.
Historically, EES has played three main roles. First,
EES reduces electricity costs by storing electricity
obtained at off-peak times when its price is lower,
for use at peak times instead of electricity bought
then at higher prices. Secondly, in order to improve
the reliability of the power supply, EES systems
support users when power network failures occur
due to natural disasters, for example. Their third
role is to maintain and improve power quality,
frequency and voltage.
Regarding emerging market needs, in on-grid
areas, EES is expected to solve problems – such
as excessive power fl uctuation and undependable
power supply – which are associated with the use
of large amounts of renewable energy. In the offgrid
domain, electric vehicles with batteries are the
most promising technology to replace fossil fuels
by electricity from mostly renewable sources.
The Smart Grid has no universally accepted
defi nition, but in general it refers to modernizing
the electricity grid. It comprises everything
related to the electrical system between any
point of electricity production and any point of
consumption. Through the addition of Smart Grid
technologies the grid becomes more fl exible and
interactive and can provide real-time feedback. For

Executive summary
In the coming decades, the threat and consequences of
climate change and of the re-concentration of crude oil
production in the Near East will compel industrialised nations
to make much more efficient use of energy. R&D that helps
realise energy efficiency potentials is likely to be regarded as
important in scientific, entrepreneurial, and political realms.
Demand for highly energy-efficient technologies will rise
steeply, and firms that can provide them will prosper. The
identification of energy-efficient technologies and related
energy conservation potentials undertaken in this pre-study is
a first step toward designing a R&D strategy that is consistent
with the need to evolve towards a 2000 Watt per capita society.
Reaching this level by 2050 implies reducing primary energy
use from 1200 to 460 PJ per year, despite a projected 65%
economic expansion.

The EU low-carbon economy targets for 2050 are strict, but within Finland's reach, according to VTT. Greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by as much as 90 per cent if clean energy technologies are developed and adopted at an accelerated pace in energy production, industry, housing and transport.
Low Carbon Finland 2050 is a self-financed strategic research project of VTT that supports VTT's own long-term operational planning. The project combines technological expertise from various areas of competence within VTT, from low-carbon and smart energy systems to foresight and energy system modelling.
The Low Carbon Finland 2050 project by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland aims to assess the technological opportunities and challenges involved in reducing Finland’s greenhouse gas emissions. A target for reduction is set as at least 80% from the 1990 level by 2050 as part of an international effort, which requires strong RD&D in clean energy technologies. Key findings of the project are presented in this publication, which aims to stimulate enlightening and multidisciplinary discussions on low-carbon futures for Finland.
The project gathered together VTT’s technology experts in clean energy production, smart energy infrastructures, transport, buildings, and industrial systems as well as experts in energy system modelling and foresight. VTT’s leading edge “Low Carbon and Smart Energy” enables new solutions with a demonstration that is the first of its kind in Finland, and the introduction of new energy technology onto national and global markets.

Det har længe været kendt, at opbevaring af energi
ved hjælp af Electrial Energy Storage (EES), kan
udjævne de store udsving i efterspørgslen på energi
og understøtte den fluktuerende elproduktion ved
overgangen til de vedvarende energikilder, fx vindmøller og solceller. Som led i at kortlægge fordelene
ved stabile leverancer og en høj kvalitet i elforsyningen udgav IEC, den internationale elektriske komité,
i 2011 en hvidbog om emnet. Den indeholder bl.a.
konkrete anbefalinger til det standardiseringspolitiske arbejde. I forlængelse af hvidbogen og på
baggrund af et japansk forslag er det besluttet, at
der skal udvikles standarder for EES.

Dansk Standard, der er medlem af IEC. Som udvalgsmedlem har du mulighed for at få indflydelse

2. Fra IEC white paper 2011
Introduction
Electrical Energy Storage, EES, is one of the key
technologies in the areas covered by the IEC. EES
techniques have shown unique capabilities in coping with some critical characteristics of electricity,
for example hourly variations in demand and price.
In the near future EES will become indispensable
in emerging IEC-relevant markets in the use of
more renewable energy, to achieve CO2 reduction
and for Smart Grids.
Historically, EES has played three main roles. First,
EES reduces electricity costs by storing electricity
obtained at off-peak times when its price is lower,
for use at peak times instead of electricity bought
then at higher prices. Secondly, in order to improve the reliability of the power supply, EES systems support users when power network failures
occur due to natural disasters, for example. Their
third role is to maintain and improve power quality,
frequency and voltage.
Regarding emerging market needs, in on-grid
areas, EES is expected to solve problems – such
as excessive power fluctuation and undependable
power supply – which are associated with the use
of large amounts of renewable energy. In the offgrid domain, electric vehicles with batteries are the
most promising technology to replace fossil fuels
by electricity from mostly renewable sources.

in a Smart Grid, information regarding the price of
electricity and the situation of the power system
can be exchanged between electricity production

in developing a Smart Grid.
In October 2010, the IEC MSB (Market Strategy
Board) decided to establish a project team to plan
future IEC activities in EES. This White Paper summarizes present and future market needs for EES
technologies, reviews their technological features,
and finally presents recommendations for all EES
stakeholders.
