In Search of Truth:At the Crossroad of Critical Theory and Technology in the DesOps world
16 JULY 2018
For the deliberation at
Department of English, Baba Bhairabananda Autonomous Mahavidyalaya, Jajpur
(http://bbmchandikhole.org/
Goal
The session is an attempt to
understand, in a non-traditional
lens, the relevance of critical theory
in context to today’s ever-changing
world of technology space
impacting business organizations.
A brief overview of the
critical theories from a diachronic
lens that will be helping the students in grasping the
fundamentals in a socio-cultural context.

A cross-discipline
comparison with the
modern design-driven
practices in the
software industry that would
help the students understand the potential and
opportunities in the real world scenario where these
theories would help.

Diachronic
•  Study of State of Linguistic system with reference to origin,
development and time.
•  Considers the development and evolution of a language
through history.
Synchronic
•  Study of State of Linguistic system without reference to time
•  Considers a language at a moment in time without taking
its history into account.

Plato and Aristotle used
synchronic analysis
Later it was revived in a more formal way
starting from pre-modern era.

Truth vs. Imitation
•  Ar=st	is	an	imitator	of	an	imita=on	which	is	far

•  Poetry	is	an	offshoot	of	improper	knowledge	and
understanding	of	both	how	to	use	and	how	to
make	what	it	describe.
•  Poetry	nourishes	Passion	instead	of	eradica=ng

Solution to Platonic Dilemma
•  Out	of	many	forms	of	literature,	tragedy	is	the	best	form
•  Tragedy	causes	people	to	experience	tragic	pleasure
(pity	&	fear)
•  Tragedy	provides	outlet	i.e.	Katharsis
•  So	it	does	not	nourishes	passion
•  Poetry	presents	the	world	of	probability	&	necessity

based on forming an Ontology of
literature of that time.

In computer science Ontology
encompasses a representation,
formal naming, and definition of the
categories, properties, and relations
of the concepts, data, and entities
that substantiate one, many, or all
domains.
In the philosophical Ontology
study of the nature of being,
becoming, existence, or reality, as
well as the basic categories of
being and their relations.
Ontology is about
categorization and relationships in a space

Pairs of mutually-exclusive signifiers in a paradigm set
representing categories which are logically opposed and
which together define a complete universe of discourse
This is purely Ontological approach (See the connection to
connect to Plato / Aristotle??)

Derrida: Plato, Rousseau, Saussure),
•  the meaning of speech is immediate and present, whereas
•  the meaning of writing is distant and imperfect.
Derrida merely deny any difference whatsoever between the
two terms, as if “speech” and “writing” could be used
interchangeably

New Criticism
Literary Art is Autonomous
A literary movement that started in the late 1920s and 1930s and
originated in reaction to traditional criticism that new critics saw
as largely concerned
with matters extraneous to the text, e.g., with the biography or
psychology of the author or the work's relationship to literary
history.
a work of literary art should be regarded as
autonomous, so should not be judged by reference to
considerations beyond itself

Sartre’s Nothingness
Sartre defines two kinds of
"being" (être). One kind is être-en-
soi, the brute existence of things
such as a tree. The other kind is
être-pour-soi (consciousness). Sartre
claims that this second kind of being
is "nothing" since consciousness
cannot be an object of
consciousness and can possess no
essence.
