A purely digital library does not have a physical collection and therefore does not use a catalog. Instead, it uses

several criteria, such as author, title, and subject. Databases include abstracts, full-text documents, images,

A purely digital library does not have a physical collection and therefore does not use a catalog. Instead, it uses
several databases. A database is a digital collection of stored information that has been organized, often by
several criteria, such as author, title, and subject. Databases include abstracts, full-text documents, images,
statistics, and more. Some databases contain general information on a variety of topics, and others contain
information only within a specific discipline or field. Think of a database like a virtual library shelf. It contains
many of the same resources you would find on a shelf in a physical library but in a digital form.

For many years, institutions housing archive, library, and museum (ALM) collections have catalogued their holdings either into specialized software for each area types, or have forced their collection records into systems which do not take into account the cataloging standards of the field those materials represent.
New technology now allows us to rethink the way ALM assets can be catalogued, not only according to professional standards, but in a collaborative environment. Bridging the ALM Divide demonstrates how cataloguing into a collaborative environment enhances research, protects collections, increases access and interpretation and secures professional standards.

This session presented a case study of how the Magnes is using new, innovative technology to make their archive, library, and museum information compatible in one centralized collection management system. This project is designed to facilitate research, sharing, and collection management by making all material types searchable and linkable to one another, while using shared metadata sets (eg. some of the Magnes’ museum fields are able to be exported to EAD and MARC; some MARC-enabled fields are also exportable into EAD. Many fields are also ISAD-compliant and the Magnes also used CDWA for some data-entry standards and Getty’s ULAN for the creators and artists).

By streamlining interlibrary loan processes and using a shared online platform, it provides a faster turnaround time of 4 days and lower per-transaction costs than traditional ILL. The program has since expanded to include more institutions and now processes over 100,000 requests annually. Participating libraries retain autonomy over their local policies while benefiting from the increased access to collections across the consortium.
Resource Sharing and Off Campus Users
The presentation summarized a case study and survey results that found declining document delivery requests from off-campus students correlated with increased electronic resource access, while book requests remained steady; interpretations suggested students are more self-sufficient finders of information online, though awareness and instruction of library services could be improved; discussion questions focused on challenges of ILL for distance students and adapting services, workflows and agreements to better meet their needs.
NELINET: A Retrospective Montage
1999 - Arnold Hirshon is introduced as the new executive director of NELINET. Concerns are raised about challenges libraries will face from internet and technology changes.
2000 - Moore's Law about computer processing speed doubling every 18 months is noted alongside Fremonter Rider's law about library collections doubling every 16 years.
2009 - NELINET and Lyrasis vote to merge, forming a new strategic union to advance libraries in New England with national recognition, regional presence, and local touch.
Doing More with Less: The Crisis, Cooperation, and the Library
The current financial situation has forced many libraries to pay unprecedented attention to how they are organized to achieve their missions. One common thread emerging in the responses is cooperation: those needing to cut costs sharply are finding that they cannot do so incrementally but must instead transform their activities in ways that spread cost and diffuse risk among many partners. The talk will cover some of the opportunities available for transformative institutional collaboration among libraries, including collaborative, open source software development as well as the challenges facing those attempting to collaborate. It will pay particular attention to the question of how to collaborate strategically: that is, how to ensure that collaboration retains or increases a library’s ability to pursue mission, enhance agility, increase sovereignty, and improve sustainability.
