This document provides a rationale for integrating technology into math lessons for 6th-8th grade students. It summarizes various ways teachers can incorporate blogs, podcasts, videos, applications, interactive websites and more to help students better understand topics like fractions. Specific resources highlighted include instructional videos and songs, as well as math websites, applications and interactive activities that allow students to practice skills like converting fractions at their own pace. The goal of integrating these technologies is to help both teachers and students develop 21st century skills while strengthening comprehension of important math concepts.

2. Rationale for Technology
Integration
• Most individuals believe that math is not used on a
daily basis, but they are misguided, as one paying
attention can find Math, everywhere in our daily
lives. Teachers can use technology to help students
become engaged and understand topics in not only
mathematics, but beyond. We use technology to
help strengthen our understanding about fractions,
to solve problems by watching it as a visual learner,
and to further progress our skills.
• This presentation will show you how teachers can
incorporate blogs, podcasts, videos, movie clips,
applications, SMART Board activities, and interactive
math websites into their lessons. By integrating
technology within the classroom, teachers will better
help students learn the material.
• Using technology helps both teachers and students
to develop skills that are essential for the 21st
century. Technology helps students to think, create,
analyze, evaluate and apply learned information and
skills.

the teaching and the learning of fractions.

• Cory Howard is the blog author of this site. Students can check out his
blog post on converting a rational number to a decimal by using long
division. Student will learn and know that the decimal form of a rational
number terminates in 0’s or it eventually repeats.
• His video is an example that helps students learn and understand the
topic of improper fractions and mixed numbers by citing numerous
examples. Below the video, Howard has specific resources for the lesson,
such as a Parent Letter, Discussion Protocol, and a notes template.
• Howard is a teacher who is a member of LearnZillion’s Dream Team. It is
a group of extraordinary educators that are selected every year from
around the country to create LearnZillion’s content.

• This podcast is from The Math Dude Quick
and Dirty Tips To Make Math Easier. The
Math Dude helps students understand math
easier and have fun doing the problems.
• Jason Marshall provides clear explanations
of math terms and teaches helpful tips that
will help any student strengthen their
fundamental skills.
• Both teachers and students can use
podcasts. Teachers can use sections of a
specific podcast in class, or even give a
specific link to students to listen to at home.
Podcasts are great because students can
listen to them at home, at school, or even on
the go.

This website is for teachers, parents, students. There are numerous
math worksheets teachers can use. Teachers can print as many fraction
worksheets that they need to use during their lesson.
• Math Goodies
This site includes math lessons that are designed to be meaningful to
the student. Each math lesson provides in depth instruction for all ages and
abilities. They also offer worksheets, games and puzzles.
• Super Kids
Super Kids is a site that lets teachers create their own math drills. By
simply inputing the number, a worksheet will be created to the teachers
specifications. Teachers can then print the worksheets that they created.
They also offer quick tips as well on the specific subject.

help students remember the
math terms.

in 5 minutes. By doing this it will help the students think fast and

how to solve it.

• Math IXL is an internet based website where students can do specific fraction problems that
were assigned by the teacher, or even their parents.

• This website is great for teachers because they check on their students progress. This website
is very beneficial for teachers and students, because it challenges the student at their own
pace.

• Adapted Mind is an online free trial website where students can do
worksheets and practice problems on a specific subject in math. This
website was created by graduates of Stanford, Berkeley and Harvard.
• Students can work at home on specific math topics that they might
struggling within the classroom. Practice makes perfect!

• Khan Academy is a great online website that most middle school and high school’s use as
a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. Just need to sign up through a Gmail
account or Facebook.
• Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning
dashboard. Students take control of their learning by working on the skills they choose
and at their own pace. This website has subjects in math, science, computer
programming, history, art history, economics, and more.

21. Uses of the Internet:
Interactive Websites
• Math Play is an online website that has
numerous middle school math games. They
are organized by grade level, content, and
game type.
• Students can either play games alone or even
work with friends to improve their education!

• A great use of the internet would be Google. Students
and teachers can type in any specific math topic and
find, notes, worksheets, practice problems and more.
• Some students might
not always carry a
calculator on them, but
if they are near a
computer or even an
ipad or iphone, they can
access one on Google.

• Teachers can use this easy online grade book.
• LearnBoost’s grade book allows teachers to
manage their classroom, creating lesson plans,
students attendance, and more.
• Teachers can enable parent and student
accounts by giving them an access code. They
can communicate, collaborate, view their

more.
