Improper Fraction Mixed Number By the end of this lesson, you will be able to Define and identify an improper fraction and mixed number Convert an improper fraction to a mixed number
We know that 3/3 looks like: And 1 looks the same. What does 4/4 look like? 1 looks the same! If the numerator and denominator are the same, you can convert it to the number 1.
But what about 6/3? We know that 3 is the denominator, so we have something with 3 pieces. But 6 pieces are taken…Huh?? How?? What if a candy bar has 3 pieces and we eat 2 candy bars…What would that look like? We have a bar split into 3, and ended up eating 6 pieces…6 out of 3, 6/3
6/3 = Improper Fraction Improper fraction: greater numerator than denominator It is up to us to convert the number: How many candy bars do we have here? 2…6/3 is the same as 2.
What about 10/3? The denominator is 3, so we have something broken into 3 pieces…but how many do we have? We can rewrite 10/3 as a MIXED NUMBER:
Try these: Draw a representation for and convert into a mixed number: 5/2 14/6 15/3 9/4
