• The world is changing, and sometimes it probably seems you're in a race to catch up. The latest technology
probably takes a chunk out of your yearly budget, and then you have to reeducate yourself about how to do things
in new and different ways -- like how to turn the flat screen on and off or set the programmable timer on your HVAC
system.
• Sure, technology is neat. It can make it easy to video conference with your associates in Tokyo or read the
headlines on your tablet while Web surfing at your favorite java joint. You can bank, shop, research your medical
symptoms and get free legal advice all online. You can use technology to plot your driving route to Disney World,
complete with turn-by-turn verbal instructions. If driving is too much of a hassle, you can investigate the best airline
deals and accommodations with a click of your trusty mouse. And these are just a few of the more straightforward
things technology can do to make your life easier.
• You may be concerned about the collateral damage caused by technology, like loss of privacy, but like a rushing
tide, technological advancements are always coming -- and they're coming fast. From the development of
genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to nanotechnology that may make it possible to cure a disease using
microscopic machines that operate like mini-medics inside the human body, technology impacts so many areas of
modern life that it's impossible to ignore. Using it as a teaching tool and also making it a topic of study in schools is
an important feature of a comprehensive, broad-based education. Like reading, writing and math, technology is
fundamental.
• On the next pages, well take a look at some of the ways technology and education blend and occasionally clash.

• Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) uses instructional methods designed to encourage or
require students to work together on learning tasks. CSCL is similar in concept to the terminology, "e-
learning 2.0" and "networked collaborative learning" (NCL).[47]
• Collaborative learning is distinguishable from the traditional approach to instruction in which the instructor
is the principal source of knowledge and skills. For example, the neologism "e-learning 1.0" refers to the
direct transfer method in computer-based learning and training systems (CBL). In contrast to the linear
delivery of content, often directly from the instructor's material, CSCL uses blogs, wikis, and cloud-based
document portals (such as Google Docs and Dropbox). With technological Web 2.0 advances, sharing
information between multiple people in a network has become much easier and use has
increased.[48]:1 One of the main reasons for its usage states that it is "a breeding ground for creative and
engaging educational endeavors."[48]:2
• Using Web 2.0 social tools in the classroom allows for students and teachers to work collaboratively,
discuss ideas, and promote information. According to Sendall (2008),[49] blogs, wikis, and social
networking skills are found to be significantly useful in the classroom. After initial instruction on using the
tools, students reported an increase in knowledge and comfort level for using Web 2.0 tools. The
collaborative tools prepare students with technology skills necessary in today's workforce.
• Locus of control remains an important consideration in successful engagement of e-learners. According to
the work of Cassandra B. Whyte, the continuing attention to aspects of motivation and success in regard
to e-learning should be kept in context and concert with other educational efforts. Information about
motivational tendencies can help educators, psychologists, and technologists develop insights to help
students perform better academically.[50]

• Technology helps the teachers prepare students for the
real world environment. As our nation becomes
increasingly more technology-dependent, it becomes
even more necessary that to be successful citizens,
students must learn to be tech-savvy.
• Integrating technology in education everyday helps
students stay engaged. Today’s students love technology
so they are sure to be interested in learning if they can
use the tools they love.

• Technology and design lessons allow children and teenagers
to be creative while also developing new skills and grasping
an understanding of how things work. Technology education
can provide students with a wealth of information and
knowledge, which they can then use in the future to purse a
related career or simply as a subject of interest and intrigue.
Technology is an increasingly significant part of the society
children are growing up in today, so it is only natural that they
should learn about the appliances and systems they rely on on
a daily basis. Technology, like science, also inspires students
to think and form questions based on what they see and learn;
this leads them to want to gain further knowledge and
understanding which they are them able to pass onto others.

• Technology is ubiquitous, touching almost every part of our lives, our communities, our
homes. Yet most schools lag far behind when it comes to integrating technology into
classroom learning. Many are just beginning to explore the true potential tech offers for
teaching and learning. Properly used, technology will help students acquire the skills they
need to survive in a complex, highly technological knowledge-based economy.

• Integrating technology into classroom instruction means more than teaching basic computer
skills and software programs in a separate computer class. Effective tech integration must
happen across the curriculum in ways that research shows deepen and enhance the
learning process. In particular, it must support four key components of learning: active
engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, and connection to
real-world experts. Effective technology integration is achieved when the use of technology
is routine and transparent and when technology supports curricular goals.
• Many people believe that technology-enabled project learning is the ne plus ultra of
classroom instruction. Learning through projects while equipped with technology tools
allows students to be intellectually challenged while providing them with a realistic snapshot
of what the modern office looks like. Through projects, students acquire and refine their
analysis and problem-solving skills as they work individually and in teams to find, process,
and synthesize information they've found online.

• Technology has become a defining force in our lives and it
shows no sign of diminishing. While some people will never
use the knowledge they gained in various classes while in
school, their experience with technology will most definitely
come into play during adulthood.
• Today, online learning has given students access to professors
and knowledge that may not have been able to receive
otherwise. Assignments are being completed digitally and
handed in more efficiently. Technology has allowed students
to access some the greatest minds in the country during
various lectures and lessons, versus just receiving the
mandatory curriculum from local teachers.

• Technology will define where online education goes next.
All those millions of students clicking online can have
their progress tracked, logged, studied, and probably
influenced, too. Talk to Khan or anyone behind the
MOOCs (which largely sprang from university
departments interested in computer intelligence) and
they’ll all say their eventual goal isn’t to stream videos but
to perfect education through the scientific use of data.
Just imagine, they say, software that maps an individual’s
knowledge and offers a lesson plan unique to him or her.

  • 2. • The world is changing, and sometimes it probably seems you're in a race to catch up. The latest technology probably takes a chunk out of your yearly budget, and then you have to reeducate yourself about how to do things in new and different ways -- like how to turn the flat screen on and off or set the programmable timer on your HVAC system. • Sure, technology is neat. It can make it easy to video conference with your associates in Tokyo or read the headlines on your tablet while Web surfing at your favorite java joint. You can bank, shop, research your medical symptoms and get free legal advice all online. You can use technology to plot your driving route to Disney World, complete with turn-by-turn verbal instructions. If driving is too much of a hassle, you can investigate the best airline deals and accommodations with a click of your trusty mouse. And these are just a few of the more straightforward things technology can do to make your life easier. • You may be concerned about the collateral damage caused by technology, like loss of privacy, but like a rushing tide, technological advancements are always coming -- and they're coming fast. From the development of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to nanotechnology that may make it possible to cure a disease using microscopic machines that operate like mini-medics inside the human body, technology impacts so many areas of modern life that it's impossible to ignore. Using it as a teaching tool and also making it a topic of study in schools is an important feature of a comprehensive, broad-based education. Like reading, writing and math, technology is fundamental. • On the next pages, well take a look at some of the ways technology and education blend and occasionally clash.   • 3. • Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) uses instructional methods designed to encourage or require students to work together on learning tasks. CSCL is similar in concept to the terminology, "e- learning 2.0" and "networked collaborative learning" (NCL).[47] • Collaborative learning is distinguishable from the traditional approach to instruction in which the instructor is the principal source of knowledge and skills. For example, the neologism "e-learning 1.0" refers to the direct transfer method in computer-based learning and training systems (CBL). In contrast to the linear delivery of content, often directly from the instructor's material, CSCL uses blogs, wikis, and cloud-based document portals (such as Google Docs and Dropbox). With technological Web 2.0 advances, sharing information between multiple people in a network has become much easier and use has increased.[48]:1 One of the main reasons for its usage states that it is "a breeding ground for creative and engaging educational endeavors."[48]:2 • Using Web 2.0 social tools in the classroom allows for students and teachers to work collaboratively, discuss ideas, and promote information. According to Sendall (2008),[49] blogs, wikis, and social networking skills are found to be significantly useful in the classroom. After initial instruction on using the tools, students reported an increase in knowledge and comfort level for using Web 2.0 tools. The collaborative tools prepare students with technology skills necessary in today's workforce. • Locus of control remains an important consideration in successful engagement of e-learners. According to the work of Cassandra B. Whyte, the continuing attention to aspects of motivation and success in regard to e-learning should be kept in context and concert with other educational efforts. As our nation becomes increasingly more technology-dependent, it becomes even more necessary that to be successful citizens, students must learn to be tech-savvy. • Integrating technology in education everyday helps students stay engaged.   • 5. • Technology and design lessons allow children and teenagers to be creative while also developing new skills and grasping an understanding of how things work. Technology education can provide students with a wealth of information and knowledge, which they can then use in the future to purse a related career or simply as a subject of interest and intrigue. Technology is an increasingly significant part of the society children are growing up in today, so it is only natural that they should learn about the appliances and systems they rely on on a daily basis.   • 6. • Technology is ubiquitous, touching almost every part of our lives, our communities, our homes. Yet most schools lag far behind when it comes to integrating technology into classroom learning. Many are just beginning to explore the true potential tech offers for teaching and learning. Properly used, technology will help students acquire the skills they need to survive in a complex, highly technological knowledge-based economy. • • Integrating technology into classroom instruction means more than teaching basic computer skills and software programs in a separate computer class. Effective tech integration must happen across the curriculum in ways that research shows deepen and enhance the learning process. In particular, it must support four key components of learning: active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, and connection to real-world experts. Effective technology integration is achieved when the use of technology is routine and transparent and when technology supports curricular goals. • Many people believe that technology-enabled project learning is the ne plus ultra of classroom instruction. Learning through projects while equipped with technology tools allows students to be intellectually challenged while providing them with a realistic snapshot of what the modern office looks like.   • 7. • Technology has become a defining force in our lives and it shows no sign of diminishing. While some people will never use the knowledge they gained in various classes while in school, their experience with technology will most definitely come into play during adulthood. • Today, online learning has given students access to professors and knowledge that may not have been able to receive otherwise. Assignments are being completed digitally and handed in more efficiently.   • 8. • Technology will define where online education goes next. All those millions of students clicking online can have their progress tracked, logged, studied, and probably influenced, too. Talk to Khan or anyone behind the MOOCs (which largely sprang from university departments interested in computer intelligence) and they’ll all say their eventual goal isn’t to stream videos but to perfect education through the scientific use of data.
