Illustration planning
Hand drawn
• The drawings I have done so far are all hand drawn, and I started to
attempt colouring them in hand drawn also. I also drew some outlines to
then put onto photoshop and colour in using the brush tool. Personally, I
think I prefer a hand drawn outlook on my illustrations as it brings my own
style and originality through. However the practicality of it is that it would
be very time consuming and I would have to be very accurate with my
drawings, paying attention to detail and making sure the brush strokes
weren’t messy. This would be quite tricky as I will have a lot of artwork to
approach. I do however like the hand drawn work more as I like the dainty,
authentic look. If I do design my illustrations hand drawn, I think it could
partially be a waste of time and effort as children have a short attention
span and wont actually look at the drawings in detail, they will be more
focused on colour and the settings.
Photoshop drawings
• When it comes to the drawings I edited on Photoshop, I think they are
quite cartoon like and maybe more suitable to a children's book, as this
appeals to children more. The hand drawn approach is more sophisticated
which I like a lot, however children are more drawn to bold colors and
straight outlines as it is a lot more simplistic looking and I’d say it grabs
their attention a lot quicker. This technique also will be a lot more suited to
my time limit on what I can create with the weeks I will have for
production. When it comes to making my final products, I will use a
graphics tablet instead of the brush tool on Photoshop as it will create
better brush strokes and I can apply more detail like when I hand draw
rather than solid fills as that’s what I want to try avoid with my illustrations.
However with my backgrounds, I might use some solid fills with hand
drawn details.
