3. Riassunto del libro
• Il signore Hiram Otis, americano, acquista un castello in
Inghilterra “Canterville Chase”. Tutti gli dicono che il
luogo è infestato da un fantasma, anche il vecchio
proprietario Lord Canterville lo avvisa, ma lui è deciso.
Quando lui e la sua famiglia arrivano al castello, è una
bella giornata di luglio, ma appena entrano nel viale
della casa il cielo si copre e comincia a piovere. A
riceverli c’è l’anziana governante, la signora Umney, a
lavoro lì da molto tempo. La signora Otis vede una
macchia di sangue sul pavimento, luogo dove fu uccisa
la moglie di Sir Simon (il fantasma). IL figlio maggiore la
tiglie con uno smacchiatore.
4. Continuo del riassunto
La governante avvisa che non sparirà,ma nessuno le vuole
credere. Infatti la macchia riappare nuovamente. Tra gli Ortis
e il fantasma ci sono continui scherzi anche pesanti, solo
Virginia rimane in disparte, silenziosa. Durante la notte il
fantasma si presenta e cerca di impaurire i componenti della
famiglia, ma alla fine sono loro che si prendono gioco di lui
facendogli molti scherzi, soprattutto i gemelli. Nessuno ha
paura di lui. Passa il tempo ma lui vuole vendicarsi, ma alla
fine abbandona la speranza di poter spaventare quella
famiglia, l’ unica persona gentile è Virginia, la figlia
quindicenne. Un giorno la ragazza va in una sala, qui trova il
fantasma tutto triste e cominciano a parlare. Lui le racconta la
sua storia, che non dorme da 300 anni e vuole morire, lei
comincia a piangere .
5. Parte finale del riassunto
• Virginia ha compassione di lui e decide di aiutarlo,
lo accompagna alla morte. Virginia scompare, la
famiglia la cerca ma non riesce a trovarla. Alla fine
una sera a mezzanotte ricompare con in mano un
cofanetto con dei gioielli dato dal fantasma, per
ringraziarla di essere riuscito a trovare la pace dopo
essere stato perdonato per i peccati commessi. Otis
vuole ridare i gioielli a Lord Canterville, ma lui li
rifiuta per paura che ritorni il fantasma. Virginia
indosso i gioielli per il suo matrimonio con
Cecil,Duca di Cheshire.
