The Stop And Frisk Laws
The stop and frisk laws in New York City illustrate Max Weber s idea of the societal role of laws
because it shows how Weber distinguishes the law from things such as social norms and customs. In
other words, Weber believes that rather than create laws that conform to the norms of society, they are
made in accordance of the needs of a state. Weber defines law as coercive order, an order that has the
potential backing of the full force of the state, (Law, Status, Wealth, and Power 110). A state can
support the law with full support in order to protect what it was made to protect. The stop and frisk
laws are a great example of laws such as the ones that German lawyer Max Weber described.
The idea of a stop and frisk is that a police officer can arrest a suspect only if they have enough
suspicion that someone has committed a crime. A stop is only allowed when a police officer observes
unusual conduct which leads him reasonably to conclude in light of his experience that criminal
activity may be afoot, (Toobin, TNY 2013). Some believe that the search and frisk law itself is not the
issue, but that the practice by police officers is what is at question. Constantly targeting minorities is
what the basis of the controversy behind this law is. As the numbers will show in the rest of this essay,
they are the ones who are being most frequently searched and this is resulting in a high number of
people who are against this law. There have been countless trials in New York

The Resource Of Tap Water
Water is a seemingly abundant source that is vital for basic life on Earth. This element not only acts as
a catalyst for human survival but is constitutional for certain entities of architecture such as passive
water cooling or permeable paving. Water is a renewable natural resource, but society s uneconomical
uses of this depleting resource may lead to a future of drought. Generally speaking, one of the main
types of water is tap water, which is water that undergoes through of series of treatments that
maintains a governmentally accepted water quality. In this paper, the resource of tap water will be
analysed through its process of its development, social expectations and inevitable consequences that
underlie in this resource.
Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom are the basic components which fundamentally make up a
water molecule. However with the process of water treatment, chemicals such as chlorine (Cl) or
ozone (O3) are added to improve the safety and quality of the water (Water, 2014). Before the system
of water treatment was adopted, drinking water was often contaminated with bacteria which led to
water borne illnesses such as cholera and typhoid. The concept of treating water was adopted in India
using the technique of sunlight to destroy bacteria, charcoal filtering and storage of drinking water in
copper compartments (Water, 2013). The city of Toronto receives their tap water from Lake Ontario
and is filtered through Toronto s four Treatment Plants as

Public Health Problem Of Childhood Obesity
Public Health Problem There is a giant threat looming over the United States, a catastrophic event of
epidemic proportions which is threatening to capsize the health care system and that epidemic is
childhood obesity. The awareness of this epidemic as a national problem developed in 1999 with the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s (CDC s) publication of a compilation of yearly state
based maps that indicated the increase in the levels of childhood obesity. There were earlier studies
done by the CDC regarding this epidemic, but the maps gave physical proof of the dramatic increase
for this pressing issue (Dietz, 2015). There have been many studies done in trying to find the root
cause for childhood obesity and all stem back to bad dietary patterns, physical inactivity, and genetics.
Additionally, factors in society that contribute to this detrimental disease is the education and skills
that are taught to children at a young age along with food marketing and promotion for unhealthy
foods. There isn t a demographic group in the United States that has been unaffected by the childhood
obesity epidemic, but there is evidence that supports that some subgroups of the U.S. population are
more prone to the onset of this epidemic and that have been more affected than others. Certain ethnic
minority populations, children from low income families, and children from the southern region in the
United States display the trend of having a higher percentage of overweight

Introduction:
Planning Commission is a very old system and it will have to be rejuvenated, it will have to be
changed a lot. Sometimes it costs more to repair the old house, but, it gives us no satisfaction.
Thereafter, we have a feeling that it would be better to construct a new house altogether and therefore
within a short period, we will replace the planning commission with a new institution having a new
design and structure, a new body, a new soul, a new thinking, a new direction, a new faith towards
forging a new direction to lead the country based on creative thinking, public private partnership,
optimum utilization of resources, utilization of youth power of the nation, to promote the aspirations
of state governments seeking development, to empower the state governments and to empower the
federal structure.
The above quote was said by PM Modi in his speech at Red Fort on 68th Independence Day. He
announced the formation of a new institution to replace 65 years old planning commission on that day.
NITI Aayog is a brainchild of Modi led BJP Government. Primarily it aims to increase the role of
states in setting up economic policies for them.

Hofstede S Cultural Dimensions
Growth of research addressing the relationship between culture and consumption is exponential. Thus,
culture s influence on consumption and marketing had drawn increasing attention in recent years.
Hofstede s framework is the most widely used national cultural framework in psychology, sociology,
marketing and management studies. His dimensions were all constructed in such a way that they
addressed basic problems that all societies have to deal with. Thus, these dimensions of national
culture were constructed at the national level namely:
PDI: Power Distance Index
IDV: Individualism versus collectivism
MAS: Masculinity versus Femininity
UAI: Uncertainty Avoidance Index
In 1991, a fifth dimension has been added LTO Long Term versus ... Show more content on

The third dimension is MAS, where masculinity cultures such as Japan, Austria, Venezuela value
achievement and success; whereas femininity cultures such as Sweden and Norway stress caring for
others, interpersonal relationships and quality of life. Regarding the MAS index, Crotts and Erdmann
(2000) found visitors from less masculine cultures to be less critical and forgiving when evaluating
travel services compared with visitors from more masculine cultures, who are more assertive and
judgmental and evaluate airline service quality less positively and are less loyal to airlines.
UAI reflects the extent to which people feel threatened by uncertainty or ambiguity and try to avoid
these situations. Money and Crotts (2003) found that visitors from high uncertainty avoidance cultures
(e.g. Greece) engage in significantly more risk or uncertainty reducing behaviors such as purchasing
more often prepaid tour packages, travel in larger groups, stay for shorter periods, and visit fewer
destinations than their low uncertainty avoidance German counterparts when traveling internationally.
LTO refers to the preference for instant reward versus delayed reward. Countries such as Taiwan,
Japan, South Korea are long term orientated and stress thrift, hard work, dedication and savings. On
the other hand, cultures such as Pakistan are short term orientated that focus on tradition and social
obligations.
IND refers to the extent to which

School Lunch Programs For Children
Every day, millions of school children around the world take advantage of school lunch programs.
Depending on the financial situation of their families, some of these students may qualify to get these
lunches for free. For the poorest children, this may be the only meal they get all day. For the rest of the
children who are not living in poverty, these program allow them to purchase a hot meal during school
at a very low price. While these school lunch programs help out countless students in many countries
around the world, there are numerous problems associated with them. Often, standards for food
preparation are not high enough. In countries like America, these lunches commonly lack the proper
nutrition children need. Instead, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For many of these children, this may be the only meal they get all day. While this program could be a
life saver for millions, it is plagued with problems that pose a serious threat to the students. Various
insects are commonly found in the food, including worms. In addition, larger animals including lizards
have also been found, causing 16 students to feel dizzy. Worse still, in 2013, at least 22 children were
dead after poison in the school lunch, with dozens more hospitalized. By nightfall...officials said they
believed they had found the cause: cooking oil stored in a container formerly used for insecticides
(Harris). The problem with school lunches in India is the lack of proper storage facilities (Chatterjee).
The schools lacked the finances to have dry locations to store grain, and as a result, a lot had to be
stored in the open. Once it starts raining, the bugs move in. Additionally, the people living in these
parts of India cannot afford to throw things away. As a result, everything is reused, especially.
Unfortunately, the insecticide container was not marked properly, and therefore food products were
stored inside. The government of India had good intentions when starting this free school lunch
program. Without doubt, it prevented many children from starving to death, and set minimum
guidelines for the number of calories and protein that lunches

Education And Recidivism Essay
Though there is evidence that educational programs are needed to help in reducing crime, politicians
and policy makers have not really understood this finding and thereby support the programs they
assume are better suited at deterring criminals. Thus, they directed funding from educational programs
to other areas, such as in security and anger management or drug treatment (Batiuk et al 2005).
Furthermore, studies have shown that those inmates that are released from prison, about two thirds of
them end up being re incarcerated within three years of their release (Klein et al 2004). As a result,
when these policy makers ignore empirical research and findings and set up own policies, they are
setting up the offenders for failure and anyone else affected by the policies, ... Show more content on

However most of the research did in fact have controls for some of these risk factors indicated above,
thereby reducing structural inequalities that may be there in crime occurrence (Lori 2015). If there is
no control on these risk factors, it can be said that there is a correlation but no causation between
correctional education and recidivism, which is what most policymakers argue (Lori 2015). Public
opinion also has a big impact on political will and what policies will be implemented and how. Thus,
empirical research is more or less useless as it is hard to influence public opinion just by data (Latessa
2004). This can be seen historically, asin 1994, a law was signed in US called the Violent Crime
Control and Law Enforcement Act (VCCLEA) which was the one of the main reasons of budget cuts
of towards correctional education. VCCLEA allowed funding from the education programs to be used
in other departments (Brazell 2009) and thus slowly correctional education programs were dying

Identity And Identity In Joseph Kestner s Treasure Island
Joseph Kestner is quoted saying, In Treasure Island, Hawkins is forced to achieve an identity, but this
process is riddled with ambiguity, including the fact that Jim commits murder and remains haunted by
the experience as a nightmare, (______). He specializes in masculinity theory from novels written in
the late nineteenth century. Kestner can relate Jim because he is forced to become a new person, kill a
human to save his own life, and questions why situations happen. Wyeth suggests that Jim will take on
a courageous mysterious journey by using Jim s poses, gender roles, darkness, and specific details to
portray his maturation throughout the novel, thereby suggesting that we are all subject to transitions
that are inevitable. Also, Stevenson and Wyeth use text and images that do not correlate how they
should, which can confuse readers and have them wonder why the image was placed in this book.
Through Jim Hawkin s pose and gender roles, Wyeth portrays Jim s transition from adolescence to a
masculine adulthood. Jim s pose shows that he is unemotional compared to his mother who is
positioned behind him. In this illustration, Jim is shorter than his mother, but Wyeth uses the technique
occlusion to make Jim appear larger than he actually is. Wyeth uses this technique to demonstrate the
importance of Jim, implying that he is clearly the most powerful character. In the nineteenth century,
gender roles were vastly different than they are today; for example, females acted

Theories Behind Habits On The Brain Reacts And Performs...
Subconscious practices in which the brain reacts and performs tasks without much thought is the clear
definition of a habit. Each of us develops various habits throughout our life and it is the subconscious
acts we incorporate into daily life over time, often due to their effectiveness at accomplishing
particular tasks. While a habit is not categorized as positive or negative, it is the harmful actions that
should be altered to ensure a more productive life. Charles Duhigg explains the theories behind habits
in The Power of Habit and how we form them in order to save us from the trite tasks of everyday life.
Due to constant methods of performing tasks or simple urges our brain connects the three factors cue,

This maze was run a few times, then something happened, after the click, the rat ran down and turned
right, immediately finding the cheese. Positive reinforcement of finding the cheese created a habit for
the rat. The rat s ability to recognize the path to the cheese was a sign of how the brain stimulation
affects behavioral patterns. As soon as the click was heard and as each rat learned how to navigate the
maze, its mental activity decreased (15). The scientists believed the click of the door was the cue,
running the maze was the routine, and the reward being the cheese. Interestingly, humans (and many
animals) are conditioned by the cues, routines and perceived rewards, therefore receiving positive
benefits or feelings provide a strong stimulant to repeat any behavior. In the same fashion, the reward
of cheese resembles the habit of removing my shoes whenever possible was formed, as this is a
routine I developed over time and my brain recognized a sense of pleasure. The clicking of the door
opening for the rat relates to my desire to being in an environment in which shoes are not required,
therefore this is the cue that was created. My routine involves releasing my feet from the binding
shoes that prohibited a sense of comfort and freedom, whereby given any chance to free myself of this
restrictiveness I was much like the rat running through the maze

Nintendo, the video game industry would be drastically different. An example of an event that would
have altered the video game industry without Nintendo would be the Video Game Crash of 1983,
where video games were being reproduced at a rate where all copies couldn t be sold and how all of
the games at the time were essentially the same, repetitive gameplay. Nintendo s franchises will be

Other companies, such as Sony and Microsoft, has produced some very memorable games too, but
without Nintendo, they would have never gotten anywhere. The Nintendo Entertainment System is

Although the Nintendo Entertainment System was not the first video game console, it revived the idea
of grander videos games and Nintendo is to thank for that. They have stretched the boundaries of the
games far more than anyone thought was possible. Plus with the Video Game Crash of 1983, Nintendo
basically saved the future of video games. Everything that Nintendo has done has been inventive,
whether it was successful or a failure. The Virtual Boy (INSERT DATE) was an attempt at virtual
reality, which was a failure as it gave players headaches due to the red and black graphics. Even
though the Virtual Boy was a colossal failure, the innovation of the handheld systems was a massive
success and is still a popular trend among gamers

British Sonnets
The British sonnets To Sleep and Come Sleep! O Sleep, the certain knot of peace , written by John
Keats and Sir Phillip Sidney respectively, contain many similarities and a few distinct differences.
They both are about the act of falling to sleep and the many beneficial thing that come from sleeping.
Both of these sonnets are also very moving in their exquisite use of an assortment of literary
techniques. However, these sonnets differ in the tone in which they are written, the speed at which
they are intended to be read, and their rhyme scheme. The British sonnets To Sleep and Come Sleep!
O Sleep, the certain knot of peace are very similar in their subject matter and use of literary
techniques, but are quite different in their tone, designed reading speed and rhyme scheme. The British
sonnets To Sleep and Come Sleep! O Sleep, the certain knot of peace contain many similarities.
Perhaps the two sonnets greatest common factor is their extensive use of personification. The two
authors of these poems both use personification to humanize sleep. Personification is displayed in To
Sleep when the narrator calls sleep the soft embalmer of the still midnight (Keats 1). The narrator is
bestowing upon the sleep the title of the soft embalmer of the still midnight (Keats 1). The use of
placing a title of something non human bestows near human like status upon said non human object.
Sir Phillip Sidney also uses personification in his sonnet, Come Sleep! O Sleep, the

Fascism In Italy Research Paper
The rise of Fascism in Italy was one of the most dominant and progressive movements in history. A
Fascist state has many characteristics of a totalitarian state in which the leader is able to control all
political, economic and social aspects of the state. The surprising part of this seizure of power in Italy
was that in just ten years, the Italian government went from being a Socialist party to a Fascist party
with very nationalistic qualities. The key leader during this rise of power went by the name of Benito
Mussolini, later referred to as Il Duce meaning The Leader . The increase in popularity of a Fascist
state is due to the turmoil the country was in and having a strong opportunist, like Mussolini, that was

important opponent, he was pushed from his spot and Mussolini took control of the march. King
Victor Emmanuel III was placed in a tough decision before the black shirts, Mussolini s mini army of
men marching to Rome, arrived. Due to the previous political issues that had occurred, there was no
one specific government at the time, and the King had to choose between Mussolini s Fascists or the
anti monarchist Socialists. On October 28, 1922, the King named Mussolini Prime Minister of Italy,

Social Construction of Race and How It Affects Society Essay
Humans define race by how they conceive and categorize different social realities. Thus, race is often
referred to as a social construct. The differences in skin color and facial characteristics have led most
of society to classify humans into groups instead of individuals. These constructs affect us all, and
they often result in situations where majority racial groups cause undue suffering to those that are part
of the minority. The understanding of race as a social construct is best illustrated by the examination
of racial issues within our own culture, specifically those that have plagued the history of the United
States.
Although race as a physical condition has likely occurred in societies from the beginning of human
existence, it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the Declaration of Independence stated that All men are created equal, the U.S Constitution
denied minorities basic human rights, such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. With this, the
line had been drawn. Skin color had now become the definite indicator of how race would be defined
in future American society.
This sentiment of racial inferiority by the white American was further demonstrated by their treatment
of Native American society. As European settlements continued to expand across the continent,
Indians were forcibly removed from their land to make room for the more civilized white American.
The Native American population was practically eradicated with only a handful of survivors
remaining on small, segregated reservations in Oklahoma. The genocide of their people and their
culture left most Native Americans with extreme resentment towards the white man. Ironically, just as
the white man saw the Native American people as uncivilized savages, Native Americans saw
firsthand how barbaric the white man actually was. This further supports the theory that race is not a
physical characteristic, but something that is constructed by different societies to establish each ones
perception of how the other is viewed or perceived. In Mary C. Waters Social Construction of Race
and Ethnicity, she explains this theory in the

In this image we see two 13 year olds of different generations, the one on the left was taken 10 years

wearing any makeup it is very neutral and innocent, the image doesn t show off any assets or suggests
anything sexual. Whereas the image to he right she is wearing a pantsuit with a really low V cut. She

decade can make blows my mind. Children are being exposed to women wearing small skimpy
clothing and a face full of make up. I believe that since they are on T.V children are looking up to
them wanting to be like them. This is where children are exposed to how men are treating women and
how women are treating themselves. Kids don t know any better they just want to be like their

All speeches need to begin with an introduction, which you ve learned about in previous lessons. The
point of an introduction is to grab your audience s attention and provide an overview of what you re
going to speak about; in addition, your introduction needs to include a thesis statement: What point are
you arguing? All speech also need to end with a strong conclusion. The conclusion of a speech should
not simply summarize the main points. Instead, use your conclusion to convince your audience to take
action. Revisit the thesis in your conclusion: In light of the evidence you ve provided, why should
your audience now believe your thesis? Why is your opinion right ?
What happens in your speech between the introduction and the conclusion can vary. Two possible
models for structuring a persuasive speech include the following:
1. Problem/Solution: the first part of your speech explains the problem (More than 60 percent of

The long history of the combination of animation and documentary is one that stretches back to the

can nonetheless seem oxymoronic. However these new and relatively explored sub genres actually
depict a new field in the documentary genre known as animated documentary. Filmmaker John

documentaries do not have to be presented as only live action film but rather a variety of creative
expressions to reproduce actuality. Though animation and documentary ... Show more content on

Animation shifts and broadens the limitations of what can be shown about reality by offering new and
alternative ways of seeing the world. It allows for the conventional subject matter of documentary to
be presented in a non conventional way. It also has the potential to convey conscious experiences,
such as memories and dreams visually, which is traditionally beyond what a live action documentary
can achieve. Animation has the potential to the viewers insight into the mental states of other people.
This is the kind of technique is what Chris Landreth did when creating the animated documentary

What Is The Characterization Of The Little Prince
Identification with the Little Prince s Fox Throughout the short children s novel, The Little Prince by
Antoine de Saint Exupery, the Little Prince encounters a variety of different characters, all showing
him or teaching him something about life. My favorite character and the one that I can connect to most
is the Fox. The fox enlightens him on what it is truly is to be tamed. He shows him that you are
responsible for whatever you have tamed, whether it be a pet, a person, or even a rose. When the Little
Prince first stumbled across the fox, he would not go anywhere near him. The fox informed him that if
he wanted to get to know him, he would have to have patience and tame him. He then further
explained how he has never been tamed before, and requested that the Little Prince would do so. Little
by little, each day the Little Prince would get closer and closer to the Fox, at last being able to pet him.
The Fox grew to anticipate seeing the Little Prince at the same time daily, located in the same place.
He grew to love the Little Prince, leading them to establish ties. The Little Prince was not just any
little boy to him anymore. Now that the Fox was tamed, it is time for the Little Prince to leave. The
Fox begins to weep and the Little Princes worries that taming the Fox did not do him any good.
However, the Fox goes onto explain that because of him the golden color of the wheat fields will bring
him joy, because it evokes memories of the Little Prince s

Holmes Sheppard Case
Why does a trial get a retrial when the first trial served justice? Dr. Samuel Holmes Sheppard was
born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1923. He studied at Hanover College and Western Reserve University.
Sheppard pursued careers in medicine. He got married in 1945 to his high school girlfriend, Marilyn.
After a few years of their marriage, they returned back to Cleveland, Ohio. Until July 4, 1954, they
lived a charmed life in a wealthy neighbourhood. Then suddenly on July 4, 1954, Marilyn was found
dead in their bedroom. This case is known as one of the longest running and most sensationalized
court cases in the United States history because of the elements of doubt within the case. Dr. Sheppard
was convicted of the murder. In the first trial, he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

doesn t matter what kind of doctor you are, all the doctors were trained the basic things such as
checking pulse. For me, I learned it when I was in 8th grade, so Sheppard should know it. This shows
that he knew she died, but he called his friend, so in case if gets in trouble, his friend s testimony can
save him. Secondly, neither the defense nor the prosecution brought up about his make up stories. In
the article by Larkin, B, from Speaking up for Marilyn in the 60 year old Sam Sheppard murder case
stated that when Sheppard was making alibis to walk away when he got arrested. However, in the
second trial, no one brought it up. When Sheppard was arrested he said that there was blushy haired
killed her. However, there wasn t any damaged in the house. Unfortunately, no one brought this up.
Thirdly, the defense counsel didn t let Sheppard to testify because Sheppard s Cool, pedantic style did
not make a good impressions with the 1954 trial. ( Linder, Law2) If the defense counsel allowed it
then the truth would have been out. Fourthly, the bloodstain on his pants, which shows that he when

Stereotypes In The Outsiders
Stereotype; a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or
thing. In the realistic fiction novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, and in the short story, Geeks
Bearing Gifts , written by Ron Koertge, stereotypes are defied by ordinary people. In The Outsiders,
Johnny Cade and Darry Curtis face many struggles throughout their lives. Their town in separated into
two: the rich and dangerous Socs, and the quiet, tough Greasers. For them, living dangerously is a
reality. As a result of their lifestyle, Johnny has become fearful and Darry is considered the toughest
man in the gang. In Geeks Bearing Gifts aspiring journalist, Renee, interviews her fellow classmates
who are classified as outcasts. After meeting several students, she realizes her assumptions were
incorrect about them. After reading both of these stories, the reader learns that our thoughts about
others often revolve around stereotypes and assumptions, but most of these ideas that we have about
other people are proven wrong.
In The Outsiders, Johnny and Darry find themselves struggling with the stereotype society has labeled
them with. While in the park, Johnny and his friend Ponyboy are jumped by five Socs. Unexpectedly,
Johnny stands up for himself and protects his friend. On page 56, the text states, I killed him, he said
slowly. I killed that boy . Bob the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled up and
still. This demonstrates that although Johnny is considered a timid and innocent person, he proves that
how he acts in the gang is different from how he acts in the outside world. This is unexpected because
Johnny is always the one being cared for in the gang. However, he protected his friend by killing
someone. Johnny s actions prove that our assumptions about others are wrong. This matters because
society needs to realize that based on stereotypes, we incorrectly judge others before getting to know
them. Johnny is a clear example of what happens when one is judged based on assumptions. Another
example of this theme is reflected when Darry breaks down at a hospital after finding out that his
younger brother, Ponyboy, is going to be okay. On pages 98 99, the text states, Darry,

The United States Stock Market Crash
On October 29, 1929 the United States Stock Market Crashed. It was devastating. About 16 Billion
U.S. dollars went down the drain. I live in New York with my 2 brothers and sister: Jack, Daniel, and
Maggie. We use to live in a pretty upscale apartment. However,The depression hit us like a train. My
dad, Tom was laid off at his law firm right after the stock market crashed. He was desperate for money
so he began work in a textile factory. Unemployment rates skyrocketed from a mere 3% to 25%! My
mom, Jean, use to be a stay at home mom, but now works in a clothing sweatshop to put food on the
table. With such little pay we were forced to move out of our beautiful apartment into a crummy run
down tenement. Shortly after, my father lost his job at the Textile factory. It s 1931 right now and he
hasn t worked since. We couldn t even depend upon our savings. Thousands upon thousands of banks
were closed down, so we lost all of our money in the bank. My widowed aunt Celeste has also come
to live with us. Her husband committed suicide after losing all his money when the Stock Market
collapsed. My mom had to get a second job and make ends meet. But it just not enough. We were
evicted from our tiny one bedroom tenement. We now reside in a Hooverville. We barely have enough
money to put a little food on the table. My little sister has asthma and her medication costs a lot so she
s been sick lately. I mainly blame our financial situation on margin buying and President Hoover.

Close Reading Of Mcteague
Humans are meant to empathize with one another, it is in the nature of people and it inherent to the
human psyche. Though, people attempt to cover up their empathy and show disinterest towards others,
the kind nature to feel bad for those lesser than ourselves tends to shine though. The narrator in the
passage, seemingly uninterested in McTeague s life, is actually wuite the opposite. Rather than turn a
blind eye to the life of McTeague, he actually seems to pity the man. This is shown through diction,
tone, and details presented to the reader in the text. Authors hand select words that match their ideas
and their goals for their writing, and this piece is no different. The narrator uses words that hail a
negative connotation. By presenting McTeague as Sluggish the reader is lead to believe that he is lazy
or inept. The narrator seems to hold an air of contempt and pity for McTeague, believing him to be
unintelligent and slow minded. The narrator also implies that he is poor by inferring that McTeague s
dreams were, well beyond his means (61 62). This brings on an air of sadness but hopeful. Despite the
narrator believing that McTeague is destitute, they still believe him to be hopeful and seemingly ...

simple treasures that McTeague holds dear to him. Hwoever, as the narrator does this, it seems as if

reason is often to please other people. The narrator is seen to pity McTeague, and this is done through

this when a chimp beat another chimp so badly it killed the rival. She also learned that the type a

that chimps can use and make tools. this made us have to come up with a new definition for mankind.

Being A Relationship With Someone Can Really Put One
Being a relationship with someone can really put one to the test. It takes two to be in a relationship
and it is usually two people who love one another. Within a relationship, there will be ups and downs
and agreements and disagreements, but that is when the two individuals have to come together as one
and fix the situation. During relationships, there will be arguing and quarrels, but it takes the two
lovers to know their limits. Physical and emotional abuse are the most common abuses known to take
place in a relationship, but emotional abuse can be worse than physical abuse; even though it may
result in psychical abuse from self harm or from the harm of the spouse. Emotional abuse commonly
cannot be seen within a person, because one tries to hide it from other people by keeping a smile on
their face daily, and using the phrase, I am fine, everything is okay. , when really one is broken inside.
Most people are afraid to leave the relationship they are in because of the fact that they have given
their all to that person, and to just let it all go at once has been an extremely challenging situation to
face. There is no perfect relationship and the sun is not always shining like some songs and movies
portray love to be. Being called names, avoiding communication with each other, yelling and
screaming at each other, are all aspects of emotional abuse. During relationships, true enough, times
will get hard. Being called names, yelling and screaming at each other, rolling

Symbolism In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter
The most prevalent symbol, both physically and figuratively in Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter is the
symbol in the title itself the scarlet letter. It is worn by the novel s protagonist, Hester Prynne, and was
placed there by those in her Puritan community after her extra marital affair resulting in her pregnancy
and subsequent offspring. The letter serves to display that she is an adulterer; symbolised by the letter
A. This is evidenced by a townsman s remark Yonder woman, Sir, you must know, was the wife of a
certain learned man...he sent his wife before him...in some two years, or less, that the woman has been
a dweller here in Boston . Being without her husband for two years and conceiving a baby obviously

As a narrative comment he states On the other hand, a penalty which in our days would infer a degree
of mocking infamy and ridicule, might then be invested with almost as stern a dignity as the
punishment of death itself. Puritans moving to North America sought to cleanse the culture of what
they regarded as sinful practices. It was their belief that the government should strictly enforce
morality by publicly barring acts such as gambling, corruption, non modest dress and adultery. In
some Puritan colonies, adultery was condemned through far worse punishments than the displaying of
an A . It was usually met with fines, floggings and was even made a capital crime by the
Massachusetts Bay General Court in 1631. Hawthorne draws a comparison between the harsh
punishment that was placed upon Hester, and its seemingly absurd nature when observed in the time
when he was writing The Scarlet Letter, in the 19th century. His disdain for Puritan punishment
through symbolic medium may also be linked to Hawthorne s ancestry. His great great grandfather,
John Hathorne, was a judge in the infamous Salem Witch Trials, in the Massachusetts Bay colony,
where harsh Puritan punishment was exercised against the innocent. Nathaniel Hawthorne added the
w to his surname sometime after learning this in an effort to distance himself from his ancestor. This
provides an explanation to why Hawthorne s symbolic presentations of Puritan sin is so critical, to
further condemn his Puritan ancestors for their

The Kite Runner, By Khaled Hosseini
Khaled Hosseini once said: there are a lot of children in Afghanistan, but little childhood. Rape in
Afghanistan is said to be an epidemic, but according to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of the
term is a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time. Rape in
this country is viewed as something that is inevitable and cannot be stopped. Usually, rape also
involves domestic violence, hence the reason they re paired together. Contrary to common
misconception, men are raped as well as women, especially children of both genders. In the Kite
Runner, rape is a topic that is prevalent in and throughout the book. Bacha Bazi is even a part of the
Kite Runner.
Bacha Bazi is a phrase that is a significant piece of the plot of the Kite Runner. It alludes to the rape of
little boys. In the story, the protagonist, Amir, must go to Afghanistan to save his nephew from being a
bacha bazi sex slave. With Amir s decision to take action, he internally hopes that it will rid him of the
guilt he felt as a child when he saw Hassan, his brother, raped. His guilt manifests over time because
he did not support him by standing up for him. As part of the practice, rich people who buy the boys as
slaves sometimes them dress up in female clothing. Sometimes they re forced to wear fake breasts.
Prepubescent teens and even young children, specifically the boys, are seen as a socially acceptable
substitute for girls in this society. Afghanistan

Brian Eno s Furniture Music
This traditional Eastern idea of living in harmony with nature contrasts sharply with the Western
practice of control and manipulation of the environment,
The earliest precursor I can think of for Eno s concept is Furniture Music, or Musique d ameublement,
by Erik Satie and Darius Milhaud, premiered in 1917. This is the first piece in history expressly
designed not to be listened to. Apparently, Satie ran around among the audience at the first
performance crying don t listen, don t listen , a difficult instruction to follow as the piece is quite
interesting, and it is hard to ignore music being played right in front of you

Themes in Mircea Eliade s The Sacred and the Profane
Mircea Eliade s The Sacred and the Profane analyzes a wide variety of components that are found
within various world religions. Eliade uses the history of religion to support his ideas as the the book
itself is a brief introduction to religion as a whole, particulary the religions of primitive societies.
Nonetheless, when looking to the past one can see that mankind s desire to associate itself with the
sacred has been occuring for thousands of years. From temples to passages of intiation, religious man
is a unique microcosm that follows and repeats the structure of the religious macrocosm, the creation
of the cosmos. One can conclude that Eliade views religion as the paradigmatic solution for every
existential crisis. (p210) and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The participation in these events and overall repetition enforces the religious content and provides an
optimistic vision of existence and eventual transcendence for the participant. It provides a break from
a temporal and profane duration of time and into a sacred time of importance and meaning for a
religion and its followers. Religious experience then would fall into the personal realm of man himself
and how he perceives the world around him. Nature provides a chief component in primitive religious
man s view of the cosmos and his gods. The sky houses the gods, remote although it may be, natural
phenomenon such as thunder and rain gave primitive and early religious man the reasoning to place
his gods above him in the intangible heavens as such natural occurrences were due in part to the
supernatural beings dwelling in the skies. Alongside the sky, the observation of the transition of the
moon and sun (night and day) signify death and rebirth. Water too plays a symbolic part in human
experience and although it has a powerful capability to destroy life, it also reiterates the cosmogonic
cycle, especially with the practice of baptism where water renews life. (p132) Earth itself is also
linked to the human experience of child birth with females. The idea of a Terra Mater or mother earth
(p138) symbolizes the idea of the earth reproducing its vegetation based life in comparison to the
experience of mother giving birth of her children.

The Leap
In James Dickey s poem The Leap, he tells about his memory of a thin/and muscular, wide mouthed,
eager to prove (21 22) girl, Jane MacNaughton. He talks about how she goes from being, the fastest
runner in the seventh grade , (3) to a Mother of four. (28) Jane who spurned the earth, as a seventh
grade runner, left behind the slow footed yokels (44) in her cloud of dust. The playground champion is
finally overcome by reality. She returns to dust as a victim of the eternal process .
During a school dance, Jane with a light/Grave Leap , touches the end of a paper ring. Dickey sees this
as a farewell to childhood and a new beginning into adulthood. She is well ... Show more content on

He does not go into detail to describe the second leap. This may be because he knows more about her
in her childhood, or it may be because he does not want to know about her death at length. When she
commits suicide, he knows she is not the same person that he once knew; she is now a, mother of four.
(28) She has changed, but it has not been for the better because she may have had a hard life. One day
she was unable to handle the pressures of her life any longer and committed suicide. He says, as he
holds the newspaper containing the article of her suicide, that I held / without trembling a picture of
her lying cradled / in the papery steel as though lying in the grass. (30 32) It is not that he does not
care about her death; he just cannot face her death and this is why he does not tremble. She is hardly
the same person to him, and so he is able to save the image of her first leap. He will always use this
one image as her identity, full and alive, to him.
These two leaps are different, but are used to represent the same idea. Jane leapt in order to express
her sense of freedom in the first leap. She leapt with strength; she showed to everyone around her that
she was very alive, free and capable. Yet, the second leap was a cry for help, a searching for freedom.
By taking this second leap she was able to become free by death. Her life was hard by, some boy who

The Media Techniques Employed to Give the Audience a Negative Impression of Commodus
From the start of the blockbuster and award winning film Gladiator , Ridley Scott uses many different
media techniques to give a negative impression of Commodus, the physically strong yet emotionally
weak son of Marcus Aurelius Caesar. Make up, lighting, sound effects, music, body language, speech
and facial expression are all factors that director Ridley Scott invokes to give the audience an attitude
of hatred and revulsion towards Commodus. All of these features develop along with the films plot,
and by the dramatic ending there is little left to think about Commodus other than evil.
From the start of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows us what sort of person he is to become he starts off as whining and annoying, but slowly
becomes stronger, more powerful and a lot more evil.
When Commodus sees his father praising Maximus and smiling with him, this makes him jealous and
this clearly visible on his face. A look of resentment takes over Commodus facial expression and
shows us that he does not like Maximus at all, and is also extremely envious of him because he has a
stronger relationship with his father than his own son does. Deceiving all those around him,
Commodus falsely goes up to his father lovingly and takes his hand. This shows us that Commodus
will not stop at anything to be loved, and knows how to fool a crowd.
In front of an audience, Commodus seems to be very fond of Maximus, but when there I no one
around to see them both, he is as cruel as a man can be. Threatening, violent, disgraceful are all traits
of Commodus that he only shows to Maximus. This could be because he wants to show Maximus that
he is not scared of him, or it could be because he knows Maximus is too much of a man to go and tell
people about it. This shows that Commodus is extremely deceiving, however, it also shows how much
of a coward he is at the same time.
Because Commodus is clearly an emotionally unbalanced human being, when he hears people talking
ill of him or he is suspicious of someone doing so, he

The Industrial Revolution refers to the greatly increased output of machine made goods that began in
England in the middle 1700s. Before the Industrial Revolution, people made items by hand. Soon
machines did the jobs that people didn t want to do. This was a more efficient way of making goods.
During the industrial revolution, Political, economical, and social forces led to a period of upheaval
for the French during the eighteenth century. What political, economical, and social forces led to a
period of upheaval though during this time? In 1700, small farms covered England s territory. Wealthy

Other countries had some advantages that could enable them to industrialize but it wasn t enough. In
order for Britain to industrialize, they needed land, labor, and wealth, which they had and the other
countries didn t. So then what inventions helped industrialization form? Well, the textile industry
transformed first. Cloth merchants boosted their profit because they could produce more clothing. In
1733, John Kay made an invention called the flying shuttle that sped back and forth on wheels. It was
a boat shaped piece of wood that yarn was attached to and doubled the work that a weaver could only
do in a day. Around the time of 1764, a textile worker named James Hargreaves invented a spinning
wheel he named after his daughter, jenny. His spinning jenny allowed one spinner to work eight
threads at a time. At first, the textile workers operated these machines by hand. Then, Richard
Arkwright invented the water frame that used water rapidly flowing through streams in order to
operate this machine. In 1779, Samuel Crompton combined features of the spinning jenny and the
water frame to produce the spinning mule. The spinning mule made thread that was stronger, finer,
and more consistent than earlier spinning machines. Run by waterpower, Edmund Cartwright s power
loom sped up weaving after its invention in 1787. What did all of this progress lead to next?

Chapter One of Persuasion by Jane Austen
Chapter one of Persuasion makes use of a highly economic narrative style, which celebrates Austen s
success as a novelist. Austen s narrative style is so successful in chapter one of Persuasion as many of
the characters are introduced to the reader along with the majority of the main themes which concern
them in the novel. Austen clearly underlines that she is writing with a novelist s voice, using
traditional conventions of third person with past tense. This first hint of Austen s narration style is
shown in chapter one and reappears again in chapter eleven where it is evident that Austen has become

The idea that Sir Walter cannot produce a son shows, to an extent, that Sir Walter s family is falling in
social rank, as his daughters can be seen as a metaphor to suggest
Sir Walter s own impotence in society with the further decline of the

Another important theme in Persuasion is introduced to us in the opening chapter in the guise of
vanity and appearances. He could read his own history with an interest which never failed this was the
page at which the favourite volume always opened: Elliot of Kellynch
Hall. Walter Elliot, born March 1, 1760. Sir Walter s obsession with his own history shows us that
vanity is Walter Elliot s driving force in life. It also goes to show Sir Walter s carelessness of major
affairs, as the only script he cares to read is his own Baronetage .
When describing Walter Elliot, Austen uses flattering language, such as fine , beauty and good looks .
There is a tone of acute amusement and gentle contempt in Austen s writing with Sir Walter

almost suggests to us that Austen does not perceive beauty to be of the utmost importance in life. By

  • 2. The Stop And Frisk Laws The stop and frisk laws in New York City illustrate Max Weber s idea of the societal role of laws because it shows how Weber distinguishes the law from things such as social norms and customs. In other words, Weber believes that rather than create laws that conform to the norms of society, they are made in accordance of the needs of a state. Weber defines law as coercive order, an order that has the potential backing of the full force of the state, (Law, Status, Wealth, and Power 110). A state can support the law with full support in order to protect what it was made to protect. The stop and frisk laws are a great example of laws such as the ones that German lawyer Max Weber described. The idea of a stop and frisk is that a police officer can arrest a suspect only if they have enough suspicion that someone has committed a crime. A stop is only allowed when a police officer observes unusual conduct which leads him reasonably to conclude in light of his experience that criminal activity may be afoot, (Toobin, TNY 2013). Some believe that the search and frisk law itself is not the issue, but that the practice by police officers is what is at question. Constantly targeting minorities is what the basis of the controversy behind this law is. As the numbers will show in the rest of this essay, they are the ones who are being most frequently searched and this is resulting in a high number of people who are against this law. There have been countless trials in New York ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Resource Of Tap Water Water is a seemingly abundant source that is vital for basic life on Earth. This element not only acts as a catalyst for human survival but is constitutional for certain entities of architecture such as passive water cooling or permeable paving. Water is a renewable natural resource, but society s uneconomical uses of this depleting resource may lead to a future of drought. Generally speaking, one of the main types of water is tap water, which is water that undergoes through of series of treatments that maintains a governmentally accepted water quality. In this paper, the resource of tap water will be analysed through its process of its development, social expectations and inevitable consequences that underlie in this resource. Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom are the basic components which fundamentally make up a water molecule. However with the process of water treatment, chemicals such as chlorine (Cl) or ozone (O3) are added to improve the safety and quality of the water (Water, 2014). Before the system of water treatment was adopted, drinking water was often contaminated with bacteria which led to water borne illnesses such as cholera and typhoid. The concept of treating water was adopted in India using the technique of sunlight to destroy bacteria, charcoal filtering and storage of drinking water in copper compartments (Water, 2013). The city of Toronto receives their tap water from Lake Ontario and is filtered through Toronto s four Treatment Plants as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Public Health Problem Of Childhood Obesity Public Health Problem There is a giant threat looming over the United States, a catastrophic event of epidemic proportions which is threatening to capsize the health care system and that epidemic is childhood obesity. The awareness of this epidemic as a national problem developed in 1999 with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s (CDC s) publication of a compilation of yearly state based maps that indicated the increase in the levels of childhood obesity. There were earlier studies done by the CDC regarding this epidemic, but the maps gave physical proof of the dramatic increase for this pressing issue (Dietz, 2015). There have been many studies done in trying to find the root cause for childhood obesity and all stem back to bad dietary patterns, physical inactivity, and genetics. Additionally, factors in society that contribute to this detrimental disease is the education and skills that are taught to children at a young age along with food marketing and promotion for unhealthy foods. There isn t a demographic group in the United States that has been unaffected by the childhood obesity epidemic, but there is evidence that supports that some subgroups of the U.S. population are more prone to the onset of this epidemic and that have been more affected than others. Certain ethnic minority populations, children from low income families, and children from the southern region in the United States display the trend of having a higher percentage of overweight ... A Project On Replacing Planning Commission A Project on NITI AAYOG REPLACING PLANNING COMMISSION Sociology II Winter Semester 2014 15 ___________________________________________________________________________ Manthan Jindal ID No. : 214033 ___________________________________________________________________________ Introduction: Planning Commission is a very old system and it will have to be rejuvenated, it will have to be changed a lot. Sometimes it costs more to repair the old house, but, it gives us no satisfaction. Thereafter, we have a feeling that it would be better to construct a new house altogether and therefore within a short period, we will replace the planning commission with a new institution having a new design and structure, a new body, a new soul, a new thinking, a new direction, a new faith towards forging a new direction to lead the country based on creative thinking, public private partnership, optimum utilization of resources, utilization of youth power of the nation, to promote the aspirations of state governments seeking development, to empower the state governments and to empower the federal structure. The above quote was said by PM Modi in his speech at Red Fort on 68th Independence Day. He announced the formation of a new institution to replace 65 years old planning commission on that day. NITI Aayog is a brainchild of Modi led BJP Government. Primarily it aims to increase the role of states in setting up economic policies for them. NITI (National Institution for ... Thus, culture s influence on consumption and marketing had drawn increasing attention in recent years. Hofstede s framework is the most widely used national cultural framework in psychology, sociology, marketing and management studies. His dimensions were all constructed in such a way that they addressed basic problems that all societies have to deal with. Thus, these dimensions of national culture were constructed at the national level namely: PDI: Power Distance Index IDV: Individualism versus collectivism MAS: Masculinity versus Femininity UAI: Uncertainty Avoidance Index In 1991, a fifth dimension has been added LTO Long Term versus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The third dimension is MAS, where masculinity cultures such as Japan, Austria, Venezuela value achievement and success; whereas femininity cultures such as Sweden and Norway stress caring for others, interpersonal relationships and quality of life. Regarding the MAS index, Crotts and Erdmann (2000) found visitors from less masculine cultures to be less critical and forgiving when evaluating travel services compared with visitors from more masculine cultures, who are more assertive and judgmental and evaluate airline service quality less positively and are less loyal to airlines. UAI reflects the extent to which people feel threatened by uncertainty or ambiguity and try to avoid these situations. Money and Crotts (2003) found that visitors from high uncertainty avoidance cultures (e.g. Greece) engage in significantly more risk or uncertainty reducing behaviors such as purchasing more often prepaid tour packages, travel in larger groups, stay for shorter periods, and visit fewer destinations than their low uncertainty avoidance German counterparts when traveling internationally. LTO refers to the preference for instant reward versus delayed reward. Countries such as Taiwan, Japan, South Korea are long term orientated and stress thrift, hard work, dedication and savings. On the other hand, cultures such as Pakistan are short term orientated that focus on tradition and social obligations. IND refers to the extent to which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For the rest of the children who are not living in poverty, these program allow them to purchase a hot meal during school at a very low price. While this program could be a life saver for millions, it is plagued with problems that pose a serious threat to the students. Various insects are commonly found in the food, including worms. In addition, larger animals including lizards have also been found, causing 16 students to feel dizzy. Worse still, in 2013, at least 22 children were dead after poison in the school lunch, with dozens more hospitalized. By nightfall...officials said they believed they had found the cause: cooking oil stored in a container formerly used for insecticides (Harris). The problem with school lunches in India is the lack of proper storage facilities (Chatterjee). The schools lacked the finances to have dry locations to store grain, and as a result, a lot had to be stored in the open. Once it starts raining, the bugs move in. Additionally, the people living in these parts of India cannot afford to throw things away. As a result, everything is reused, especially. Unfortunately, the insecticide container was not marked properly, and therefore food products were stored inside. The government of India had good intentions when starting this free school lunch program. • 10. Education And Recidivism Essay Though there is evidence that educational programs are needed to help in reducing crime, politicians and policy makers have not really understood this finding and thereby support the programs they assume are better suited at deterring criminals. Thus, they directed funding from educational programs to other areas, such as in security and anger management or drug treatment (Batiuk et al 2005). Furthermore, studies have shown that those inmates that are released from prison, about two thirds of them end up being re incarcerated within three years of their release (Klein et al 2004). As a result, when these policy makers ignore empirical research and findings and set up own policies, they are setting up the offenders for failure and anyone else affected by the policies, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However most of the research did in fact have controls for some of these risk factors indicated above, thereby reducing structural inequalities that may be there in crime occurrence (Lori 2015). If there is no control on these risk factors, it can be said that there is a correlation but no causation between correctional education and recidivism, which is what most policymakers argue (Lori 2015). Public opinion also has a big impact on political will and what policies will be implemented and how. Thus, empirical research is more or less useless as it is hard to influence public opinion just by data (Latessa 2004). This can be seen historically, asin 1994, a law was signed in US called the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (VCCLEA) which was the one of the main reasons of budget cuts of towards correctional education. VCCLEA allowed funding from the education programs to be used in other departments (Brazell 2009) and thus slowly correctional education programs were dying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Identity And Identity In Joseph Kestner s Treasure Island Joseph Kestner is quoted saying, In Treasure Island, Hawkins is forced to achieve an identity, but this process is riddled with ambiguity, including the fact that Jim commits murder and remains haunted by the experience as a nightmare, (______). He specializes in masculinity theory from novels written in the late nineteenth century. Kestner can relate Jim because he is forced to become a new person, kill a human to save his own life, and questions why situations happen. Wyeth suggests that Jim will take on a courageous mysterious journey by using Jim s poses, gender roles, darkness, and specific details to portray his maturation throughout the novel, thereby suggesting that we are all subject to transitions that are inevitable. Also, Stevenson and Wyeth use text and images that do not correlate how they should, which can confuse readers and have them wonder why the image was placed in this book. Through Jim Hawkin s pose and gender roles, Wyeth portrays Jim s transition from adolescence to a masculine adulthood. Jim s pose shows that he is unemotional compared to his mother who is positioned behind him. In this illustration, Jim is shorter than his mother, but Wyeth uses the technique occlusion to make Jim appear larger than he actually is. Wyeth uses this technique to demonstrate the importance of Jim, implying that he is clearly the most powerful character. In the nineteenth century, gender roles were vastly different than they are today; for example, females acted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While a habit is not categorized as positive or negative, it is the harmful actions that should be altered to ensure a more productive life. Positive reinforcement of finding the cheese created a habit for the rat. The rat s ability to recognize the path to the cheese was a sign of how the brain stimulation affects behavioral patterns. As soon as the click was heard and as each rat learned how to navigate the maze, its mental activity decreased (15). The scientists believed the click of the door was the cue, running the maze was the routine, and the reward being the cheese. Interestingly, humans (and many animals) are conditioned by the cues, routines and perceived rewards, therefore receiving positive benefits or feelings provide a strong stimulant to repeat any behavior. • 15. British Sonnets The British sonnets To Sleep and Come Sleep! O Sleep, the certain knot of peace , written by John Keats and Sir Phillip Sidney respectively, contain many similarities and a few distinct differences. They both are about the act of falling to sleep and the many beneficial thing that come from sleeping. Both of these sonnets are also very moving in their exquisite use of an assortment of literary techniques. However, these sonnets differ in the tone in which they are written, the speed at which they are intended to be read, and their rhyme scheme. The British sonnets To Sleep and Come Sleep! O Sleep, the certain knot of peace are very similar in their subject matter and use of literary techniques, but are quite different in their tone, designed reading speed and rhyme scheme. The British sonnets To Sleep and Come Sleep! O Sleep, the certain knot of peace contain many similarities. Perhaps the two sonnets greatest common factor is their extensive use of personification. The two authors of these poems both use personification to humanize sleep. Personification is displayed in To Sleep when the narrator calls sleep the soft embalmer of the still midnight (Keats 1). The narrator is bestowing upon the sleep the title of the soft embalmer of the still midnight (Keats 1). The use of placing a title of something non human bestows near human like status upon said non human object. Sir Phillip Sidney also uses personification in his sonnet, Come Sleep! O Sleep, the ... A Fascist state has many characteristics of a totalitarian state in which the leader is able to control all political, economic and social aspects of the state. The surprising part of this seizure of power in Italy was that in just ten years, the Italian government went from being a Socialist party to a Fascist party with very nationalistic qualities. The key leader during this rise of power went by the name of Benito Mussolini, later referred to as Il Duce meaning The Leader . Thus, race is often referred to as a social construct. The differences in skin color and facial characteristics have led most of society to classify humans into groups instead of individuals. These constructs affect us all, and they often result in situations where majority racial groups cause undue suffering to those that are part of the minority. This sentiment of racial inferiority by the white American was further demonstrated by their treatment of Native American society. As European settlements continued to expand across the continent, Indians were forcibly removed from their land to make room for the more civilized white American. The Native American population was practically eradicated with only a handful of survivors remaining on small, segregated reservations in Oklahoma. The genocide of their people and their culture left most Native Americans with extreme resentment towards the white man. Ironically, just as the white man saw the Native American people as uncivilized savages, Native Americans saw firsthand how barbaric the white man actually was. This further supports the theory that race is not a physical characteristic, but something that is constructed by different societies to establish each ones perception of how the other is viewed or perceived. In Mary C. Waters Social Construction of Race and Ethnicity, she explains this theory in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Having my best friend die was the worst feeling I could have ever experienced, and I would not wish that on my worst enemy. Everyone dies, I get that. Unfortunately outstanding, youthful people with an amazing future ahead of them bites the bullet a little too soon in life. Serra Elizabeth Pearson was the most caring, loving, God fearing 16 year old girl that the world has ever been lucky enough to have grace it s wonderful land. Serra was 16 the day she died. I was able to make it to the office without losing my composure, but as soon as my eyes met my mom standing there with tears in hers I lost it. Right there standing in the school office, the food gates of heaven opened up in my eyes and I could not stop the rivers from flowing. My best friend since kindergarten had died. All the planning of moving in together when we went to college was down the drain. The late nights of watching horribly filmed scary movies was done. My heart was broken, and the pieces are still not taped together properly. Two days later was her funeral. Her mother had asked me to say a couple of words about her during the service, but the thought of standing next to her lifeless body talking about her and not to her made everything seem surreal. By the power of prayer and numerous amounts of tears, I stood up from my seat and walked lifelessly to the podium that viewed hundreds of people waiting to see what I had to say. I believe that since they are on T.V children are looking up to them wanting to be like them. This is where children are exposed to how men are treating women and how women are treating themselves. Kids don t know any better they just want to be like their favourite movie star or singer and copy how they act, dress and present themselves. This is why society is like this nowadays. • 21. Analysis Of Getting Ryan By Chris Landreth The long history of the combination of animation and documentary is one that stretches back to the earliest days of moving image. One conjures up thoughts of comedy, children s entertainment and fantasies, while the other carries with it the assumption of seriousness, education and evidence, which can nonetheless seem oxymoronic. However these new and relatively explored sub genres actually depict a new field in the documentary genre known as animated documentary. Filmmaker John Grierson defines documentary as the creative treatment of actuality, (Ehrlich 248) Meaning that documentaries do not have to be presented as only live action film but rather a variety of creative expressions to reproduce actuality. My favorite character and the one that I can connect to most is the Fox. The fox enlightens him on what it is truly is to be tamed. He shows him that you are responsible for whatever you have tamed, whether it be a pet, a person, or even a rose. When the Little Prince first stumbled across the fox, he would not go anywhere near him. The fox informed him that if he wanted to get to know him, he would have to have patience and tame him. He then further explained how he has never been tamed before, and requested that the Little Prince would do so. Little by little, each day the Little Prince would get closer and closer to the Fox, at last being able to pet him. The Fox grew to anticipate seeing the Little Prince at the same time daily, located in the same place. He grew to love the Little Prince, leading them to establish ties. The Little Prince was not just any little boy to him anymore. Now that the Fox was tamed, it is time for the Little Prince to leave. • 24. Stereotypes In The Outsiders Stereotype; a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. In the realistic fiction novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, and in the short story, Geeks Bearing Gifts , written by Ron Koertge, stereotypes are defied by ordinary people. In The Outsiders, Johnny Cade and Darry Curtis face many struggles throughout their lives. Their town in separated into two: the rich and dangerous Socs, and the quiet, tough Greasers. For them, living dangerously is a reality. As a result of their lifestyle, Johnny has become fearful and Darry is considered the toughest man in the gang. In Geeks Bearing Gifts aspiring journalist, Renee, interviews her fellow classmates who are classified as outcasts. After meeting several students, she realizes her assumptions were incorrect about them. After reading both of these stories, the reader learns that our thoughts about others often revolve around stereotypes and assumptions, but most of these ideas that we have about other people are proven wrong. In The Outsiders, Johnny and Darry find themselves struggling with the stereotype society has labeled them with. While in the park, Johnny and his friend Ponyboy are jumped by five Socs. Unexpectedly, Johnny stands up for himself and protects his friend. On page 56, the text states, I killed him, he said slowly. I killed that boy . Bob the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled up and still. This demonstrates that although Johnny is considered a timid and innocent person, he proves that how he acts in the gang is different from how he acts in the outside world. This is unexpected because Johnny is always the one being cared for in the gang. However, he protected his friend by killing someone. Johnny s actions prove that our assumptions about others are wrong. This matters because society needs to realize that based on stereotypes, we incorrectly judge others before getting to know them. Johnny is a clear example of what happens when one is judged based on assumptions. Another example of this theme is reflected when Darry breaks down at a hospital after finding out that his younger brother, Ponyboy, is going to be okay. On pages 98 99, the text states, Darry, ... By presenting McTeague as Sluggish the reader is lead to believe that he is lazy or inept. It takes two to be in a relationship and it is usually two people who love one another. Within a relationship, there will be ups and downs and agreements and disagreements, but that is when the two individuals have to come together as one and fix the situation. During relationships, there will be arguing and quarrels, but it takes the two lovers to know their limits. Physical and emotional abuse are the most common abuses known to take place in a relationship, but emotional abuse can be worse than physical abuse; even though it may result in psychical abuse from self harm or from the harm of the spouse. Emotional abuse commonly cannot be seen within a person, because one tries to hide it from other people by keeping a smile on their face daily, and using the phrase, I am fine, everything is okay. , when really one is broken inside. Most people are afraid to leave the relationship they are in because of the fact that they have given their all to that person, and to just let it all go at once has been an extremely challenging situation to face. There is no perfect relationship and the sun is not always shining like some songs and movies portray love to be. The letter serves to display that she is an adulterer; symbolised by the letter A. Puritans moving to North America sought to cleanse the culture of what they regarded as sinful practices. It was their belief that the government should strictly enforce morality by publicly barring acts such as gambling, corruption, non modest dress and adultery. In some Puritan colonies, adultery was condemned through far worse punishments than the displaying of an A . It was usually met with fines, floggings and was even made a capital crime by the Massachusetts Bay General Court in 1631. Hawthorne draws a comparison between the harsh punishment that was placed upon Hester, and its seemingly absurd nature when observed in the time when he was writing The Scarlet Letter, in the 19th century. His disdain for Puritan punishment through symbolic medium may also be linked to Hawthorne s ancestry. His great great grandfather, John Hathorne, was a judge in the infamous Salem Witch Trials, in the Massachusetts Bay colony, where harsh Puritan punishment was exercised against the innocent. Nathaniel Hawthorne added the w to his surname sometime after learning this in an effort to distance himself from his ancestor. When Commodus sees his father praising Maximus and smiling with him, this makes him jealous and this clearly visible on his face. A look of resentment takes over Commodus facial expression and shows us that he does not like Maximus at all, and is also extremely envious of him because he has a stronger relationship with his father than his own son does. Well, the textile industry transformed first. Cloth merchants boosted their profit because they could produce more clothing. Around the time of 1764, a textile worker named James Hargreaves invented a spinning wheel he named after his daughter, jenny. His spinning jenny allowed one spinner to work eight threads at a time. At first, the textile workers operated these machines by hand. Then, Richard Arkwright invented the water frame that used water rapidly flowing through streams in order to operate this machine. In 1779, Samuel Crompton combined features of the spinning jenny and the water frame to produce the spinning mule. The spinning mule made thread that was stronger, finer, and more consistent than earlier spinning machines. Run by waterpower, Edmund Cartwright s power loom sped up weaving after its invention in 1787. What did all of this progress lead to next? He could read his own history with an interest which never failed this was the page at which the favourite volume always opened: Elliot of Kellynch Hall. Walter Elliot, born March 1, 1760. Sir Walter s obsession with his own history shows us that vanity is Walter Elliot s driving force in life. It also goes to show Sir Walter s carelessness of major affairs, as the only script he cares to read is his own Baronetage . When describing Walter Elliot, Austen uses flattering language, such as fine , beauty and good looks . There is a tone of acute amusement and gentle contempt in Austen s writing with Sir Walter Elliot, who united these gifts, was the constant object of his warmest respect and devotion . This tone almost suggests to us that Austen does not perceive beauty to be of the utmost importance in life. By saying of Sir Walter that he could read his own history with an interest which never failed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
