• A preparatory English course for English-
medium studies
• Focusing on every-day life English and
academic English
• The course is mandatory for 1st year
students of MFU
• The course is NOT the prerequisite to any
courses offered at MFU
• All 1st year students
• Students exempted from this course are
those who have:
– O-Net score (English) 40 (out of 100) or
above
– IELTS score 4.5 or above
– TOEFL score 450 or above
– Proof that they are native speakers of English
HOWEVER
• Exempted students are allowed to
enroll in this course
Enrollment fee
• 3,600 THB
After the completion of this course, students will be able
to:
• correctly and appropriately use ordinary and academic
vocabulary;
• communicate in different situations in intermediate
spoken and written English with grammatical and
structural correctness;
• identify main ideas, specific information, facts and
opinions in reading passages;
• write complete sentences using various and
appropriate syntactic structures;
• apply learning strategies according to their own
learning styles and multiple intelligences.

Class attendance
• Students must attend 80% of all in-class
instruction (15 hours per week)
• The final exam score will be counted “zero”
for students absenting themselves from
classes more than 20% (18 hours / 6 class
periods)
• Late coming policy and other policies for
classroom misconduct are subject to the
instructor’s consideration.
• Writing assignments
– Throughout the course, students will
periodically be assigned four pieces of free
paragraph writing with different focuses on the
sentence structures.
• Writing assignments
– Each assignment is worth 2.5%. The instructor
will assign the topic, length, and requirements for
each assignment.
– The objective of writing assignments is to
enhance students’ sentence writing. Grammatical
accuracy and regular writing practice are taken
into account.
– Paragraph organization (i.e. unity, topic sentence,
supporting details, conclusion) is not taken
seriously at this level.
• External Reading (15%)
Each student will read ONE book assigned by the
instructor. Upon reading the book, students are
required to keep…
1. Portfolio (10%)
• 4 Worksheets will be assigned weekly by the instructor. All
worksheets will be collected in the form of a portfolio and will
be submitted to the instructor by the end of the course.
2. Handmade dictionary (5%)
• each student will record the learned vocabulary, idioms and
expression from the book in the form of a dictionary The
handmade dictionary will be collected as a part of the
portfolio.
SALLC attendance
• SALLC session is required 1 hour per
week.
• Students will be advised by the TAs.
• TAs will assign worksheets to students,
collect them and hand them over to
instructors.
• The worksheets are taken into account in
the 5% for Independent study.
• Independent Study
– Students are required to attend SALLC
session is required 1 hour per week.

– Term project (10%) will emphasize the oral skills.
– Students will give an approximate 5 minutes oral
presentation, as a group up to 5 members, based
on the external reading materials.
– The presentation of term project will take place
during the class period on Friday, July 4th.
– Two instructors will be paired up and evaluate the
presentation.

Content
– The presentation should not be retelling of the story in the
book. Rather, students will come up with their own insights
from the book, and develop them into the topic of the
presentation.
Suggested content
– Analysis of the characters
– Comparison of the book to other literature, daily life,
current situations, etc.
– Comparison of the book to film adaptations
– Discussion of the theme, social background, cultural
background, etc.
• Term Project

– Students feel free to employ any types of media,
for instance, PWP, flow charts, diagrams, video
clips, drawings, etc.
Suggested presentation style:
– Skit
– Puppet show
– TV shows (news, interviews, game shows, etc.)
– Interactive games
– Panel discussion, seminar

• This is the material for students to read for
pleasure. No assessment needed.

  • 3. • A preparatory English course for English- medium studies • Focusing on every-day life English and academic English • The course is mandatory for 1st year students of MFU • The course is NOT the prerequisite to any courses offered at MFU
  • 4. • All 1st year students • Students exempted from this course are those who have: – O-Net score (English) 40 (out of 100) or above – IELTS score 4.5 or above – TOEFL score 450 or above – Proof that they are native speakers of English
  • 5. HOWEVER • Exempted students are allowed to enroll in this course Enrollment fee • 3,600 THB
  • 6. After the completion of this course, students will be able to: • correctly and appropriately use ordinary and academic vocabulary; • communicate in different situations in intermediate spoken and written English with grammatical and structural correctness; • identify main ideas, specific information, facts and opinions in reading passages; • write complete sentences using various and appropriate syntactic structures; • apply learning strategies according to their own learning styles and multiple intelligences.

  • 10. • 12 units total – Unit 1 – 10 are compulsory – Unit 11 – 12 are optional • Student’s book only. No workbook. • Purchase: – MFU bookstore – 350 THB – Must be purchased within Monday, May 26th
  • 11. Class attendance • Students must attend 80% of all in-class instruction (15 hours per week) • The final exam score will be counted “zero” for students absenting themselves from classes more than 20% (18 hours / 6 class periods) • Late coming policy and other policies for classroom misconduct are subject to the instructor’s consideration.
  • 12. • Writing assignments – Throughout the course, students will periodically be assigned four pieces of free paragraph writing with different focuses on the sentence structures.
  • 13. • Writing assignments – Each assignment is worth 2.5%. The instructor will assign the topic, length, and requirements for each assignment. – The objective of writing assignments is to enhance students’ sentence writing. Grammatical accuracy and regular writing practice are taken into account. – Paragraph organization (i.e. unity, topic sentence, supporting details, conclusion) is not taken seriously at this level.
  • 14. • External Reading (15%) Each student will read ONE book assigned by the instructor. Upon reading the book, students are required to keep… 1. Portfolio (10%) • 4 Worksheets will be assigned weekly by the instructor. All worksheets will be collected in the form of a portfolio and will be submitted to the instructor by the end of the course. 2. Handmade dictionary (5%) • each student will record the learned vocabulary, idioms and expression from the book in the form of a dictionary The handmade dictionary will be collected as a part of the portfolio.
  • 15. SALLC attendance • SALLC session is required 1 hour per week. • Students will be advised by the TAs. • TAs will assign worksheets to students, collect them and hand them over to instructors. • The worksheets are taken into account in the 5% for Independent study.

  • 17. • Term Project – Term project (10%) will emphasize the oral skills. – Students will give an approximate 5 minutes oral presentation, as a group up to 5 members, based on the external reading materials. – The presentation of term project will take place during the class period on Friday, July 4th. – Two instructors will be paired up and evaluate the presentation.
  • 18. • Term Project Content – The presentation should not be retelling of the story in the book. Rather, students will come up with their own insights from the book, and develop them into the topic of the presentation. Suggested content – Analysis of the characters – Comparison of the book to other literature, daily life, current situations, etc. – Comparison of the book to film adaptations – Discussion of the theme, social background, cultural background, etc.
  • 19. • Term Project Delivery – Students feel free to employ any types of media, for instance, PWP, flow charts, diagrams, video clips, drawings, etc. Suggested presentation style: – Skit – Puppet show – TV shows (news, interviews, game shows, etc.) – Interactive games – Panel discussion, seminar
