Habits fulfill underlying needs unconsciously and replacing unhealthy habits with constructive alternatives can help. Phobias often originate from sensitizing events that trigger disproportionate fears if not addressed. Hypnotherapy aims to discover initial causes, relax the client, and gently expose them to feared situations through metaphors to reprocess negative associations.

Stress, anxiety, habits, and phobias are interrelated and can develop from one another if left unchecked. Stress stems from threats to equilibrium and can be triggered by external events or learned behaviors. Anxiety serves an adaptive purpose but can become maladaptive through conditioning. Habits fulfill underlying needs unconsciously and replacing unhealthy habits with constructive alternatives can help. Phobias often originate from sensitizing events that trigger disproportionate fears if not addressed. Hypnotherapy aims to discover initial causes, relax the client, and gently expose them to feared situations through metaphors to reprocess negative associations.

Skill Practice Reflection: Reflect on a time this past week where you used one of the emotion regulation skills (check the facts, opposite action, problem solving, riding the wave) when you were experiencing a negative emotion. Include a response to the following prompts for a total of about 1 page double spaced (1/2 page for skills practice and 1/2 page for WOOP).
· Emotional Regulation Skills: Describe a time in the past week when you were experiencing negative emotions and used one of the emotion regulation skills. Which skills did you use? Are those different than what you think you should have used? How did it turn out? What success and challenges did you face when using these skills?
· Complete a WOOP for a goal you have based on the following four prompts. Remember to include all four parts of the WOOP, putting particular focus on naming an internal obstacle and an if/then statement for your plan.
· WISH: What is something you wish to change in your future in terms of your ability to manage negative emotions? This change can be longer term, but make sure to then also identify something for within the next 4 weeks.
· OUTCOME: What would a specific outcome be if you were to live out the above wish?
· OBSTACLE: What is an obstacle that will keep you from using the skills to manage negative emotion? Name at least one internal barrier and one external barrier.
· PLAN: What are your plans for overcoming these obstacles and barriers to using these skills? Make sure to include an if/then statement (i.e. If you face "obstacle x", then you will do ...) and then expand on how you will ensure you stick with that plan. Include specific steps!
Gratitude Practice: Write a half a page about something that happened or something you accomplished this week that you are grateful for.
Lecture + Reading Reflection: Reflect on the previous lecture and the assigned readings for next week and the associated videos. Respond to the following prompts in a half page.
· What is one thing that resonated with you class on Wednesday, particularly from the lecture material? What do you still have questions about (if anything)?
· Identify one way you can see the content in the readings helping you going forward.

Anxiety Disorders: Diagnosis and Treatment
Anxiety is a normal emotion experienced by every human being every now and then when faced with problems. However, excessive distress that interferes with a person’s ability to operate normally causes anxiety disorder. Constant overwhelming and crippling worry and fear characterize this mental illness. This paper chronicles the diagnosis and treatment of the following anxiety disorders: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Separation Anxiety.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, OCD, is characterized by excessive uneasiness, fear, and apprehension or worry caused by intrusive thoughts, either real or imagined. The individual experiencing this kind of disorder often exhibits ritualistic behaviors: hand-washing several times a day, eating certain foods at precise times, and opening or tapping on doors a number of times before entering. The current trends in the field of Psychiatry indicate that about a quarter of the population will suffer from this disorder in their lifetime. If an adolescent is diagnosed with OCD, the disorder will more than likely follow the teen into adulthood. Compared to men, women are affected by the disorder at a rate twice as high as men are affected. Source for this entire paragraph.
The current general criteria used in the diagnosis of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder requires that an individual must have either obsessions or compulsions, realize that they are excessive or unreasonable, and they interfere with the individual’s daily routine. The obsessions must be persistent and recurrent thoughts or images that are intrusive and cause great distress. The compulsions form specific criteria under which a repetitive behavior, which is meant to prevent or distress, keeps on driving the individual. Source?
Cognitive behavior therapy, medication, or both, are the evidence-based treatments for OCD. Studies conducted indicate that at least six months duration of treatment lowers the chances of a relapse, though no optimal duration has been given. Source? Too short to be a paragraph.
The trigger of Panic Disorder is mostly fear, stress, or an excessive exercise routine. This is characterized by apprehension and brief attacks of intense terror, and can lead to confusion, nausea, shaking, and trembling. A diagnosis of Panic Disorder is marked by persistent fear of future attack and their potential this is an incomplete sentence. The sufferer, who is mostly hyper-vigilant, often notices symptoms even outside a specific panic episode. The heightened perception in body changes is psychologically as life threatening leading to recurrent panic attacks. This last sentence reads like an incomplete sentence too.

It is important to understand body language cues, but also consider other signals like context. Nonverbal communication can repeat, contradict, substitute for, or accent verbal messages. Types of body language include facial expressions, eye contact, mouth movements, posture, gestures, use of personal space, touch, and vocal tones/qualities. Interpreting these cues can provide insight into emotions, attitudes, and the truthfulness of messages.
