Mood Boards:
A range of ideas to take forward in to production. Should include images, colour schemes and font choices. Could include
mock ups and evidence of existing design work which is inspiring you.

Mood Board Images
Whilst researching for different images, I searched for street photography, portrait photography, night photography and nature
photography. The majority of these styles of photography I have not experimented with yet, however I find them very interesting.
The images have lots of different elements in common. For example, the colour scheme across the photographs is mainly orange and
yellow. Orange and yellow have connotations to autumn season where the colour of the leaves are changing. I want to feature these
colours throughout my fanzine because they are eye catching and bright. Another reason I want to use these colours is because I will
be taking photographs for the fanzine during autumn therefore it is much easier to encompass this colour scheme. Another thing
that all the images have in common is that they all follow the rule of thirds composition. This is where the photograph is framed so
that the object is central. On nearly all the images, the model is placed in the center box or along the two central lines. This means
that the audience is drawn to this first, then looks at the background. The model is in the photograph for a purpose otherwise it
would be a nature photography shot: I think that the model conveys the photographers emotions and feelings as well as contributing
to the overall mood of the image. Another similarity between the photographs is how they have been edited. The colours in the
picture are much more vibrant so that they stand out more. However, in some of the photographs the colours have ben darkened
and deepened so that it helps portray the mood. There are not many differences in the images except the colours, model and
location. Each photograph tells a story of what the photographer is feeling, therefore the tone and mood changes between each
image as the photographer wants the audience to feel the same way. The selected images make me feel inspired to create my own
work in a similar way because I am intrigued on how the photographer was feeling and how they portrayed this emotion so
successfully. The type of shot varies on each image, however it is mainly long shots or close ups. Long shots allow the audience to
see the nature background and the landscape which helps convey the emotion. A close up shot allows the audience to see emotion
in a different way as it is expressed by the model not so much the background.

Mood Board Inspiration
Whilst researching different fanzines, I found ‘Golden Age’ fanzine issue number 11. I found this fanzine inspiring because I
thought the images that were included were very creative. Each photographer expresses what they were feeling during the
photography shoot and why they felt inspired. There are lots of different elements in the fanzine that I like. For example, I like the
colour scheme that is given to each photographer as it keeps the photography separate and does not combine all the
photographers together. On the front cover, the colour scheme is different shades and tones of blue which has connotations to
feeling calm and relaxed. This is highlighted even more as there are two models stood in water. Water is a symbol of calmness
and relaxation therefore the theme on the cover is strong and bold. Another way that the fanzine has inspired me is because on
each page there are different shapes and symbols which makes the pages inside the fanzine much more interesting and eye
catching. Although, the pages are not full with text, photographs and artwork. Each page is spacious and has lots of room. This is
appealing to the eye as the audience wants to read the small information and learn about the photographer. Because the pages
include various different artworks, it suggests that the fanzine is targeted at a younger audience even though some of the topics
discussed are mature such as mental health. Another way that the fanzine has inspired is the style of photography used
throughout. Portrait photography, nature photography and street photography are all encompassed in the fanzine. I think that
this is a creative way for the photographer to express their feelings and create a mood/tone. One thing that the fanzine does not
include is an interview which means that the audience does not get their questions answered. We are left wondering what type
of camera they used, where the picture was taken or how they edited the picture. At the side of each image there is a small
description of what inspired the photographer, however not much is addressed. I would like to include interviews in my fanzine
because I think that it is even more interesting to learn about the photographer as well as the photography.

Mood Board Colour Scheme
Whilst analyzing the ‘Golden Age’ fanzine, I really liked the colour scheme that was used because I thought that the colours stood out
against each other and made the front cover eye catching. On the front cover, there is a prominent colour scheme of blue. Different
shades and tones of blue are used which I think is effective because the colour has similar connotations to what the photograph
represents. Throughout the fanzine, the colour scheme varies for each photographer that is included. I like the colour orange that is used
in the fanzine because it has connotations to autumn. Orange is also very bright which means that it would catch the audiences
attention. I think blue and orange would work together because both colours compliment each other well as they are complimentary on
the colour wheel. I began looking at different shades and tones of orange so that I could choose the specific shade that I would like to
include in my photographs as well as on other pieces of art work. I then did the same thing for blue as I wanted to see what would fit
best with the orange. I prefer a lighter blue because it is more subtle and has connotations to relaxation. I would like the text in my
fanzine to be black and the text boxes and pages to be white so that the fanzine looks professional. It will also influence the blue and
orange to stand out more when it is placed on a basic white background.
I also looked at a yellow colour scheme as this is a common colour used in some of the photographs that I looked at on my mood board.
Yellow is a very bright colour which means that my fanzine would stand out, however it has connotations to feeling happy which will not
always correlate with my feelings in my own photography. If I was going to use yellow in the fanzine, it would be for creating other art
pieces, shapes and patterns. Once again, I then researched what colour best works with yellow and it is a royal blue colour. I would not
like to use this shade of blue because I think that it is too bold and dark. I have decided I am going to use an orange and light blue colour
scheme because I think that these shades work best together. However, I will incorporate yellow and other colours into my fanzine for
the shapes etc. Yellow and orange will be incorporated into the fanzine by capturing leaves, lights, clothes etc. Each will provide a hint of
colour on a monochrome fanzine.

Mood Board Fonts
When I was looking for different fonts, I used dafont.com and looked at examples on the serif section. The first font I found was
‘apple’. I liked this font because it was simple and basic. I thought that this font would be good used as the body text. ‘Night Still
Comes’ is another font that is very simple but effective. It is not as bold as ‘apple’ which means that I am unsure whether it will
work for the body text because I think that it is almost too small. This font could possibly be used for the answer sections during the
interview. I liked the ‘neuton’ font because it is bold and eye catching. It stands out on the page which means that it would work
well as a heading font. ‘Vinegar’ is a very similar font to ‘neuton’, however it is not as bold and large. I think that this font would
work for the questions during the interview because it is bold. The next font that I found was called ‘farewell Angelina’. I liked this
font because I thought that it would work well as the body text, however comparing it to the other fonts that I have chosen, I don’t
think that it will work because it is very small but has very bold capital letters which I do not like for the body text. The body text for
my fanzine has to be subtle and simple. The next font that I found was ‘thyssen’. I like this font and I think that it would also work
well as the questions font. It is bold and eye catching but I also like how bold each letter is. I then looked at the font ‘Zachery’ and
‘modikasti’. I found these fonts slightly too simple; they do not stand out which means that the audience would perhaps not even
notice the text. The fonts that I selected were very similar when compared side by side; they are all simple and not too bold. I chose
a serif font because I want the attention to be on the photography and the colours, not the font or the title even though they are
just as important. Overall, I think I am going to use the font ‘neuton’ as the heading, ‘vinegar’ as the subtitles and ‘apple’ as the
body text as I liked these fonts the most.

Mood Board Inspiration
The ‘Image’ fanzine has inspired me because I really like the front cover. I like how simple it looks but is still eye catching. This has
inspired me to want to create a front cover with only one subject so that my front cover looks professional and clean. Another way
that it has inspired is because I like the design inside the fanzine. The majority of the pages are filled with double page spreads with
not much text. There are specific pages that are filled with text and interviews. I would not like to copy this technique because I
think that it makes the fanzine more boring and uninteresting. Instead I would include small paragraphs next to the images so that
the text is broken up and does not fill an entire page. There is not a colour scheme throughout the fanzine because it addresses
images from other books or social media sites. The colour scheme on the fanzine front cover is very simple: black, white and green.
The photograph looks like it was taken in a studio which influences the cover to look more professional. I would like my front cover
to look like this because I think that it makes the cover look cleaner and more professional. The font on the front cover is also very
simple and basic. It is not very bold, however the large text makes sure that it is still eye catching. I would like my font to be more
interesting than the font used on the ‘Image’ cover as I think that it is slightly too boring and simple. The title also has its own top
strip at the top of the page. I like this idea because it almost frames the title and makes it stand out more. I would like to copy this
technique by framing my title in a shape/box so that it looks more artistic and abstract. In my opinion, I think that the inside pages
in ‘Golden Age’ are much more interesting because it is not the same layout on each page. There are double page spreads, one
image with text or sometimes no images. Whereas, in the ‘Image’ fanzine the pages are designed in the same way: two
photographs on each page with the title of the image underneath or the photographers name. There is a range of photography
styles in the ‘Image’ fanzine which I think influences the fanzine to appeal to wide range audience but also influences the fanzine to
be much more interesting and not just the same style of image over again on every page. Once again, I like this technique because I
want to include a range of different styles of photography in my fanzine but it also provides me with lots of different information to
discuss.

Pagination:
A plan for the pages of your book. What will be the cover? What will be the running order? What will go in it? How many
pages for each item? This is important to get right if you want it to print correctly later on. It will also help you plan the space
you have.
• On the front cover, I would like there to be one portrait/nature image that fills the entire
page. The title will be at the top of the page in black or white font depending on the
colour of the background. The title will be structured in a box or shape to make the cover
look more artistic and abstract.
• I would like the title to be inside a white circle shape background because I it will
influence the cover to be monochrome and basic. However, the circle makes the cover
slightly different and more interesting.
• Another idea for the front cover is to have a picture from the studio. I would take an
image in the studio so that there is a plain white background on the front cover. The
image would be orange coloured so that it matches with the colour scheme inside the
fanzine. The title would be in black font with a box or shape surrounding it.
• On the back cover I would include the price as I want the front cover to be really simple
and not filled with information. The front image will follow onto the back cover with the
same image but without the model so that the back cover is even more basic as there is
no text or model.
• I would also include the issue number on the front cover so that the audience is aware of
the latest release and information. This will be underneath the title.
• I like these front cover examples because they are very simple but still stand out because
of the colour scheme, font choice and image.
• The photographs that have been chosen as the front covers are very simple with no
background noise. For example, ‘Image’ fanzine has a simple pastel green background so
that the audiences focus is on the subject.
• A pattern I have noticed across 3 out of 4 of the covers is that the photograph follows the
rule of thirds and the Fibonacci sequence. The subject is central so that the audience is
drawn to this first.

• Inside the fanzine, I would like to include a contents page so that my photographs are separated by theme
and do not blend into one as each group of photographs will have a different meaning. It will also allow the
reader to find the interview or certain topics much quicker. Finally, I think that a content page makes the
fanzine seem more professional and like a magazine.
• I am going to include an interview in the fanzine that will up 2 pages with images alongside. I will ask
questions such as: what has inspired you the most within your photography? I do not want the font to fill
up one image and be crammed together because it will make the audience not want to read it and just skip
over it. Instead I will separate the questions with images in that theme.
• I would also like to include a credit page at the end that gives credit to the model and photographer. This
will be on the very last page.
• The interview will be included once the first theme of photographs has stopped.
• I would like my photographs to fill double page spreads so that there is an image on both pages however I
will include small boxes of text next to the images talking about feelings, tone and location.

Over the weekend or days that we are not at college, as some of my themes for the images can not be taken
at college such as night photography. I will use my own camera but I will borrow a tripod from college.

Practice Front Cover Design

Issue Number
I quickly created a mock up of what I would like my
front cover to look like. The image is a nature
photography shot of someone in a field. The
photograph has been taken from a low angle. I am
unsure what photograph is going to look like on the
front cover, however I want it to have lots of space at
the top for the title. I want the colour scheme to be
orange, black and white. The photograph must
include an orange tone because it has connotations
to autumn which is what the photography that is
featured in the fanzine will follow.
At the top of the page, the title is going to be inside a
shape or box so that it stands out more and looks
more interesting. I want the shape to be a circle
because I think that it works the best with the image
and does not distract too much attention away from
the photograph. The circle will always be white
because this works well with the black font which
creates a classic monochrome colour scheme with a
hint of vibrant colour.
Underneath the title, I will include the issue number
of the magazine. The subtitle will be written in a
different font from the title and will be smaller so
that the title and the image is the main objects. This
will be the only text on the front cover because I
want the main focus to be the photograph.
The font for the title will be written in ‘neuton’ and
the subtitle will be written in ‘vinegar’.
