The document discusses a machine-to-machine (M2M) monitoring system called the eMonitoring system (eMs) that was developed to continuously monitor construction sites in a cost-effective way. The eMs connects sensors to detect structural movements and sends the data via GPRS to a central server. If sensor readings exceed preset thresholds, SMS alerts are automatically sent within 60 seconds. This allows potential site failures to be identified early and avoided. The eMs was successfully used to monitor strut forces during a tunnel construction project in Singapore.

ABSTRACT: This paper presents a secure remote monitoring system for industrial gas turbines. By adopting remote monitoring techniques, not only can the human resources required for supervising the turbines around the clock be reduced, but also the reliability in detecting faults with the turbine can be improved. In this work, the proposed system supports the remote monitoring of the gas turbine status with an android-based smart phone. Also the proposed system utilizes the well-known RSA algorithm with a 512-bit encryption to protect the sensitive information of turbines from unauthorized access including hackers. The level of security is further enhanced by prohibiting the users from saving the received turbine data on their devices. The performance of the resulting system is evaluated with an experimental setup including a virtual data generator.
As the complexity of network infrastructure grows, the challenges that already weigh on infrastructure management threaten to become unsustainable unless there is a way to significantly reduce O&M costs. Smart Operations harnesses the power of new technologies to transform labor-intensive O&M activities and so achieve a step-change reduction in costs.

travel a long distance and take reading manually to collect the data. This reading is then feed in a central
database. Then the bill gets generated later with help of software. This project intends to reduce this tedious
work by automating the process of collecting data from consumer’s electricity meter. This would be done by
implementing Advanced Metering Infrastructure that unites all the various metering devices of a building in one
network and provides the metering data in real-time, locally and from remote. Here, AMI uses ZigBee to build
up high-rise building area network of connected metering devices.

Root cause of Magnetic Humming due to TransformerRekaNext Capital
In Audio Design in cassettes, magnetic head picks up magnetic stray fields and cause irritating humming background noise. The 3rd harmonic of 50 Hz gets amplified when the speaker resonance coincides.
This R&D report validates the root cause. The solution was to have a physcial distance, while the current produced units had a wire loop to create a 150Hz pickup coil to phase cancellation manually tuned at PCB.

Modal testing was carried out to determine
the dynamic properties of the bridge. SysEng
(Singapore) Pte Ltd was commissioned
to undertake the modal testing. Professor James Brownjohn from Full Scale Dynamics Ltd was engaged by SysEng as a technical adviser for the modal testing.

This project was to develop a full scale TRL5 prototype suitable for the product development launch of the Turbolite Model. The design required the development of an Efficient Electric Power Generator Model, a 2 Dimensional Magnetic Field Finite Element Method (FEM) Model from Maxwell' s Equation with Numerical Methods using Fortran IV and Development of over speed protection electronic techniques. CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

Challenges
Currently, construction firms use automatic data loggers to provide reliable and consistent
sensor data from project sites. Remote sites use a GSM wireless monitoring system to collect
and upload data to a central computer at fixed intervals. The system then sends the data to
users at preset time cycles. Although data is captured continuously, it is not economical to
conduct continuous GSM online monitoring of sensor readings as it is very expensive to
maintain the system.
The Solution
SysEng developed the eMonitoring system (eMs), a GPRS-enabled M2M solution to address
the critical need for an effective and cost-efficient continuous monitoring system for the
construction industry.
The eMs is used in deep excavation projects to monitor strut forces in a temporary retaining
system for a cut-and-cover tunnel, such as the on-going Kim Chuan MRT Depot project.

The eMs connects to arrays of vibrating-wire (VW) or
resistance based sensors. It records the data at time
intervals. Data acquired is stored and processed in a
data logger and sent immediately to a central server
via GPRS. An automatic computer system at the
central server then uploads the monitored data to
dedicated web pages. Monitored values are
simultaneously compared with pre-set review levels.
SMS alert messages will be sent to users when the
values exceed the trigger threshold within 60
seconds.

The Results
The diagram below is a typical history graph of one of the struts monitored at frequency
intervals of 10-minutes. The increase in strut forces due to preloading and further excavation
was accurately captured by the eMs. When the strut forces exceeded the 1st review level of
543kN on a few occasions for a brief 20 minutes, the SMS alert system was triggered and the
designer was notified immediately.

The system enables the designer to have a faster design review if the monitoring data moves
unexpectedly. It has helped the designer to verify any change in loads to co-relate with the
construction site activities. If there is a sudden change in loads, the system automatically
alerts the designer for further investigation works so that potential site failures can be avoided
in time.
Having real-time site data allows site engineers to keep an eye on actual site conditions.
Reliable remote field monitoring systems at construction sites reduce risks by providing
accurate information to the right people, at the right time. Moreover, the GPRS network costs
depends on the amount of data transfer, not on the connection time, allowing the automatic
data logger to always connect to the central server, without incurring high costs. Also, all data
between logger and server are transmitted in real-time, thereby eliminating any connection
time delays.
