Definitions of terms
 New technologies:
Information and Communications Technologies
(ICTs)
for language teaching and learning,
in which the computer plays a central role,
embracing a variety of different software
applications
13/05/2013 3
Definitions of terms
 ICT (Information and
Communications Technology):
is currently favoured by most businesses and
educational institutions worldwide
to describe new technologies
- IT: Information technology -> older term still
being used.
- “C”: the important role that computers now
play in communications
13/05/2013 4
Definitions of terms
 E-learning: (= electronic learning)
- any application of ICT in learning and
teaching,
from producing a word-processed handout to
a full-blown course on the Web
- (a more limited way) online learning =
distance learning on the Internet
- CALL
13/05/2013 5
Benefits of ICT
Why should the language
teacher be concerned with
new technologies?
13/05/2013 6
Benefits of ICT (by teachers)
 is motivating both for students and for
teachers
 offers a wide range of multimedia
resources
 offers opportunities for intensive one-to-one
learning in a multimedia computer lab
 offers access to a rich resource of
authentic materials on the Internet
13/05/2013 7
Benefits of ICT (by teachers)
 offers access to a wide range of authentic
materials on CD-ROM and DVD
 makes worldwide communication
possible via email and via audio- and video-
conferencing with native speakers
 can open up a new range of self-access
and distance learning opportunities
13/05/2013 8
Uses of ICT in Language
Teaching and Learning
How can the teacher and learner of
foreign languages might use ICT?
13/05/2013 9
Uses of ICT in Language
Teaching and Learning
1. Use by students of materials that the teacher has
created with generic software applications
2. Use of generic software applications such as
Word and PowerPoint by students to create their
own materials
3. Use by students of off-air audio and video
recordings stored in digital format
4. Use by students of audio and video recordings on
commercially-produced CDs and DVDs
13/05/2013 10
Uses of ICT in Language
Teaching and Learning
5. Use by students of audio and video recordings that
the teacher has created with audio and video
editing tools and materials of this type
6. Use of audio and video editing tools by students
to create their own audio and video recordings
7. Use by students of commercially-produced
multimedia CALL packages
13/05/2013 11
Uses of ICT in Language
Teaching and Learning
8. Use by students of materials that the teacher has
created and tailored to their needs using
authoring programs
9. Use of the Web as a resource, as well as generic
tools such as search engines for finding
information
10. Use of Web 2.0 tools by students or by the
teacher, including social networking sites
11. Use of email, e-pal and e-twinning schemes,
tandem learning
13/05/2013 12
Uses of ICT in Language
Teaching and Learning
12. Computer Aided Assessment
13. Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) -
use of iPods, mobile phones and other mobile
devices
14. Use of chat rooms
15. Use of MUDs, MOOs and MUVEs
13/05/2013 13
Uses of ICT in Language
Teaching and Learning
16. Use of virtual worlds
17. Use of concordance programs
18. Use of tools falling into the category of speech
technologies
19. Use by the teacher of whole-class presentation
devices and software
13/05/2013 14
13/05/2013 15
Concordancing software
 A concordance: an alphabetical listing/index
of the words in a text, given together with the
contexts in which they appear.
 A concordancer: a computer program that
allows users to search a collection of
authentic texts (i.e. a corpus) for multiple
examples of selected words or phrases.
13/05/2013 16
E-twinning
 schools are paired with another school
elsewhere,
 communicate using the Internet (e.g. by e-
mail or video conferencing)
 to collaborate, share and learn from each
other
13/05/2013 17
MUD (Multi-User Dungeon or
Dimension)
 A (usually text-based) multi-user simulation
environment.
 Some are purely for fun and flirting, others are used
for serious software development, or education
purposes and all that lies in between.
 A significant feature of most MUDs: users can create
things that stay after they leave and which other users
can interact within their absence, thus allowing a world
to be built gradually and collectively.
13/05/2013 18
MOO (Mud, Object Oriented)
 One of several kinds of multi-user role-
playing environments.
MUVE (multi-user virtual
environments), sometimes
called virtual worlds
