4. Before Starting
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines information technology as “the technology
involving the development, maintenance, and use of computer systems, software, and
networks for the processing and distribution of data.” Merriam-Webster states that the
term was first used in 1978.
Computers existed before 1978, but they were mainly used to perform complicated
calculations. Once computers were applied to indexing and sorting written information,
the term “information technology” was invented.
