 Sentences are not just a linear string but group of meaningful words.
Definition
 Method of sentence analysis
 It analyze grammatical sentences until the constituent consists of only
meaningful part of a word.
 Constituent is the any word that enters into larger construction.
Dichotomies
 Constituent vs Constitute:
Eg:
Poor John (Viewed in relation)
Poor John (Viewed separately)
 Immediate constituent vs Ultimate constituent
Major divisions in a construction is called Immediate constituent.
Irreducible elements are ultimate constituent
Example:
The old man ran away.
The old man Ran away.
The old man Ran Away.
Old man
Advantages & Disadvantages
Advantages:
 In construction it identifies layers
 Account ambiguities & distinguish them
Disadvantages:
 All structures of grammar cannot be analyzed
 Ambiguous sentences cannot be analyzed.
