[Dr Bonnie Cheuk's Presentation at Digital Leadership Forum, 1 Apr 2021] AI sounds so magical. What exactly is AI? How humans learn and how data-driven AI Machines learn differ greatly. We need to set the right expectation as to what AI can do and create value. In this 20-min presentation, Bonnie shared a few (surprising) examples how AI has been applied in the business. You will learn that AI requires us to understand the future of work requires humans and machines to collaborate as diverse team members. Humans need to build learning agility to ensure we trust and learn to challenge AI solutions at the same time. The more we interact with “smart apps,” the more we hear the word cognitive being thrown around. But what does it actually imply? What is a cognitive application? Can you make your app cognitive? This session covers what these buzzwords mean and how to enhance your application with Watson APIs. The presenters build an application from scratch, using the Watson Java SDK, and discuss how to integrate Watson into your existing application.
IBM Watson, the cognitive technology that enhances, scales, & accelerates human expertise, is available to anyone through Bluemix, IBM’s PaaS. Watson's cognitive capabilities on Bluemix will enhance apps & help developers realize ideas not possible with today's systems.
Quick test, ask your phone “find anything but pizza restaurants”. Did you get back a list of pizza restaurants? Think about how we’ve been trained to keyword search. We have all been Google-fied & we may not even know it. Humans adapt their language, one that predates machines, to the limitations of a system.
But Watson is not a machine that lets us talk to it. It’s bigger, and that’s why this is a historic moment for developers, businesses & entrepreneurs. IBM is creating tools that can understand language, determine a personality portrait, expand concepts & more. In this session we will discuss & demo Watson Services on Bluemix & how developers can now embed these into their apps for unprecedented cognitive power.
This presentation provides demonstrations of Watson API Services utilized in various Big Data and Analytic applications and was presented at Penn State's Nittany Watson Challenge Immersion event on January 19-20, 2017.

IBM Watson health: how cognitive technologies have begun transforming clinical medicine and healthcare
Maged N Kamel Boulos
ABSTRACT
Background: IBM Watson Health (http://www.ibm.com/smarterplanet/us/en/ibmwatson/health/) belongs to a new generation of smart cognitive computing technologies (a type of artificial intelligence) that are poised to transform the way healthcare is delivered, and to vastly improve clinical outcomes, quality of care and patient safety.
Objectives: Our goal was to collect and document the huge potential of a range of emerging and exemplary uses of IBM Watson in healthcare in both developed and developing country settings.
Methods: A survey of current peer reviewed and grey literature has been conducted, looking for reports and case studies involving the use of IBM Watson in different health and healthcare applications.
Results, conclusions and clinical implications: With its ability to make sense of unstructured medical information by analysing the meaning and context of natural language, and uncovering important knowledge buried within large volumes of data and information, including medical images, IBM Watson is exceptionally well suited for clinical and healthcare decision support, where there are often elements of ambiguity and uncertainty. It has been (or is currently being) successfully deployed in many developed countries in the West, as well as in developing countries, such as India and South Africa. IBM Watson unlocks a complex case by acquiring information from multiple sources, e.g., accessing the electronic patient record, then parsing all related medical evidence at up to 60 million pages per second. After processing all of this information, Watson offers relevant and prioritised suggestions to the decision-maker, e.g., helping clinicians identify the best diagnosis and treatment options in complex oncology cases, and providing hospital managers with new operational insights. The ultimate goals are to reduce cost, medical errors, mortality rates, and help improve patients' quality of life.
Despite massive investment in both people and technology, health systems are still struggling to maximize the value of their greatest asset: their data. Delivering high-quality, valuable insight from data and pushing those insights to the frontline healthcare professionals remains challenging and expensive. According to a recent survey conducted by HealthLeaders Media, health systems are hiring more analytics staff than almost any other role in health care. We know there’s an alternative to the massive hiring of analytics staff, a better way to dramatically increase the efficiency of your existing resources and provide an ROI that grows over time. The better way is the Rapid Response Analytics Solution.
Rapid Response Analytics Solution (RRA Solution) consists of two elements: curated, modular data called DOS™ Marts and Population Builder, a powerful self-service tool that lets any type of user, from physician executive to frontline nurses and population health teams explore their data and quickly build and share populations without needing to know how to write SQL and data science code. RRA Solution increases an analytics team’s productivity by up to 10x and reduces its time to develop analytics by as much as 90 percent. Analysts can spend more time focusing on key strategic analysis and less time on repetitive tasks that can lead to inconsistent results and a backlog of requests.
Learning Objectives:
- Discover how RRA Solution allows you to take components and customize them to quickly tailor and deliver meaningful insights.
- Learn about DOS™ Marts and Population Builder and how they drive consistency and efficiency, without needing to know SQL and data science coding.
- Understand how to use RRA Solution to increase the value of your analytics team and get them operating at the top of their function.
View this webinar and learn how RRA Solution can help you achieve a 10x increase in productivity and reduce your time to develop new analytics reports by more than 90 percent.

This was a given at the Internet of Everything track held during the Bastad Entrepreneur week. The talk is about how the Watson Health Cloud platform will create “new health-based offerings that leverage information collected from personal health, medical and fitness devices” providing “better insights, real-time feedback and recommendations to improve everything from personal health and wellness to acute and chronic care.”
It was delivered shortly after partnerships were announced with Apple, Johnson & Johnson and Medtronic to make it easier for healthcare organizations to store and analyze patient data.
The Health Catalyst Data Operating System (DOS™): Lessons Learned and Plans ...Health Catalyst
Just over three years ago, Health Catalyst publicly announced the development of the Data Operating System (DOSTM). Conceptually, DOS goes back more than 20 years as a single platform that could support what Dale Sanders calls the “Three Missions of Data”—analytics, data-first application development, and interoperability.
“Data platforms are the next evolution of the technology stack,” Sanders says. While the Cloud made infrastructure an easy and scalable platform, modern operating systems and programming languages made software platforms scalable and easy to build. He cautions, however, “Data wrangling, especially in healthcare, is still a giant challenge.” Sanders explains that DOS is therefore an essential strategy for Health Catalyst, as well as an important new concept in the world of platforms.
“DOS and its concept is a data platform that makes analytics, app development, and interoperability easy and scalable,” Sanders says.
In this webinar, Sanders and Bryan Hinton will review the concept of a data operating system and the vision behind it. Hinton, who leads the DOS team for Health Catalyst, will reflect on lessons learned over the past three years and what he has planned for the future.

We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

Main point: Bringing about a transformation in what was as a society expect of technology does not happen overnight. Watson has been an iterative growth process that continues this day and into the future.
Further speaking points: Watson was a research project in IBM starting in 2006. The effort was led by a team of 15 IBM researchers working in collaboration with a pool of top universities as a “Deep QA” project. Jeopardy! was selected as the ultimate test of the machine’s capabilities because it relied on many human cognitive abilities traditionally seen as out of scope for machines such as ability to discern double meanings of words, puns, rhymes, and inferred hints. It also demanded extremely rapid responses and the ability to process vast amounts of information to make connections typically requiring a lifetime of immersion in pop culture and participation in the general human experience.
With Jeopardy! in the past, IBM and Wellpoint, one of the US’s largest health insurers, announced a partnership to pilot Watson for use among member hospitals and the insurance organization itself with a goal of improving patient outcomes and health treatments. As a byproduct, it is also expected to improve the productivity of healthcare professionals.
From Healthcare, Watson is expected to branch into other industries that rely on analytic solutions to managing unstructured data.
Additional information: Financial services organizations and call center operations are seen as high potential areas.
Main point: Data is growing at an astounding rate. It is growing so fast that we often lack the ability to use it to its full potential. The highly unstructured nature of this data makes the challenge that much more difficult. This is a real problem for business. It makes informed decisions more difficult to make. Business leaders need a way to find hidden patterns and isolate the valuable nuggets that they need to make business decisions.
Further speaking points: Yet, the rewards for finding a way to harness the data into useful information are great; 54% of companies in this year’s study with MIT/Sloan are using analytics for competitive advantage… and that number has surged 57% in just the past 12 months. “Dying of thirst in an ocean of data”… It’s an apt analogy. Data is everywhere. 90% of it didn't exist just two years ago. The vast majority of it is totally useless for any given goal and therefore amounts to noise and a hindrance to finding the key useful information needed in a specific time and place.
Additional information: See information and stats
Main Point: At the core of what makes Watson different are three powerful technologies - natural language, hypothesis generation, and evidence based learning. But Watson is more than the sum of its individual parts. Watson is about bringing these capabilities together in a way that’s never been done before resulting in a fundamental change in the way businesses look at quickly solving problems
Solutions that learn with each iteration
Capable of navigating human communication
Dynamically evaluating hypothesis to questions asked
Responses optimized based on relevant data
Ingesting and analyzing Big Data
Discovering new patterns and insights in seconds
Further speaking points:. Looking at these one by one, understanding natural language and the way we speak breaks down the communication barrier that has stood in the way between people and their machines for so long. Hypothesis generation bypasses the historic deterministic way that computers function and recognizes that there are various probabilities of various outcomes rather than a single definitive ‘right’ response. And adaptation and learning helps Watson continuously improve in the same way that humans learn….it keeps track of which of its selections were selected by users and which responses got positive feedback thus improving future response generation
Additional information: The result is a machine that functions along side of us as an assistant rather than something we wrestle with to get an adequate outcome
Main Point: Watson represents a whole new class of industry specific solutions called cognitive systems. It builds on the current paradigm of Programmatic Systems and is not meant to be a replacement; programmatic systems will be with us for the foreseeable future. But in many cases, keeping pace with the demands of an increasingly complex business environment and challenges requires a paradigm shift in what we should expect from IT. We need an approach that recognizes today’s realities and treats them as opportunities rather than challenges.
Further speaking points: For example, most digitized information of the past was structured. It was organized into tables, stored in easily identified cells in databases, and easily searched and accessed. Unstructured information was largely ignored as too difficult to utilize…and therefore it lay fallow. Similarly, traditional IT has largely limited itself to deterministic applications. 2+2=4. 100cm in a meter. Situations where there is only one answer to a question But this rules out a whole world of real world situations that have a more probabilistic outcome. It is very likely that the car will not start because of a dead battery but there is a chance there is a clog in the fuel line. It is very likely to be sunny tomorrow but it may rain. Traditional IT relies on search to find the location of a key phrase. Emerging IT gathers information and combines it for true discovery. Traditional IT can handle only small sets of focused data while IT today must live with big data. And traditional IT interacts with machine language while what we as users really need is interaction the way we ourselves communicate – in natural language.
