SPTechCon Boston 2016 - Creating a Great User Experience in SharePointMarc D Anderson
Building solutions in SharePoint isn’t simply about getting the functionality right based on the business requirements. Developers must think about the entire user experience. In this interactive class, we’ll discuss questions like: How should the user feel when they use this piece of functionality? Will they see it as saving them work or creating new work? How will it compare to what they see on the consumer Web? We’ll look at good and bad examples from SharePoint itself, as well as specific customizations.

Building solutions in SharePoint isn’t simply about getting the functionality right based on the business requirements. Developers must think about the entire user experience (UX), which goes far beyond the technical aspects of the solution. It’s no longer good enough to meet the specifications. We must exceed them in terms of usability. This takes many developers out of their comfort zones and into the messy world of end users. In this interactive session, we’ll discuss questions like:* How should the user feel when they use this piece of functionality?* Will they perceive that this functionality saves them work or creates new work?* How will the functionality compare to what they see on the consumer Web?* How can we use technologies which haven’t historically been considered mainstream SharePoint developer tools (like jQuery and CSS) to make SharePoint feel more like the sites people love? We’ll look at good and bad examples from SharePoint itself as well as specific customizations.

Microsoft is enabling Collaborative Disruption ... there are (at least) 7 applications that everyone should have on their devices ... and they are all FREE.
Every SharePoint and Office 365 deployment has immense capabilities right at their fingertips and most of it is FREE. In this session I will discuss 7 Tips that will improve anyone's ability to get more done, do more with data, and share it with the team.
I'll discuss some tools that many people have never heard of or didn't realize were available across all devices - Android, iOS and Windows.
I'll discuss Office Lens, SWAY, OneNote, Yammer, Outlook, Power BI and Delve and two bonus points.
SharePointFest Konferenz 2016 - Alternative Approaches to Solution Developmen...Marc D Anderson
We regularly hear about the importance of building Apps or Add-Ins from the Microsoft folks. But in many cases, that approach is overkill. Even in enterprises, all solutions aren’t enterprise scale. It’s always been possible to build solid solutions or solution components using the trusty Content Editor Web Part to hold some HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, and that’s still a viable approach. With a few other more modern tricks, we can even build solutions that span many pages using a common code base.
Join Marc D Anderson as he kicks around the plusses and minuses of sanctioned development versus smaller, lighter-touch approaches.

Failure, the other 'f' word [Creative Mornings]Vinnie Lauria
I was invited to Creative Mornings SIngapore (http://creativemornings.com/cities/sg) to give a talk about Failure. I don't mind being affiliated with the term, as I've had a number great lessons learned from what some label call failures, but I just call it taking risk.
What does it mean to fail? What are some ways startups fail? What should you keep in mind to stay succesful?
Tolerance for Failure = Appetite for Risk. I'm in the business of investing in risky startups, so I love to see entrepreneurs that share the same appetite.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

3. Silicon Valley NewTech Meetup
4 consumer web startups demo to an audience of 150 every month
2-3 years ago, 75-100% of a startups primary function was
!
‘social networking’ related
Today, a startup with a primarily ‘social’ function may
!
pop-up only every other month
4. To my surprise, the past 3 months has been a
boom in startup applications at the meetup
Last fall, with the economy in free fall and investors pulling in the
!
reins, there was a drop in budding new startups
Now with the economic horizon still unknown and 10%
!
unemployment, creative entrepreneurs are sprouting.
They are creating focused solutions to specific problems
!
5. “Generally Speaking” Past Themes
Social Networking

!
All-purpose
!
6. “Generally Speaking” Current Themes
Finances
!
Entertainment
!
Real-world personalized products
!
Content Filtering
!
APIs, apps, and middle layers
!
Specific Functions
!
7. One set didn’t replace the other
Sites have grown above & beyond
!
purely social networking
Social software is an underlying
!
requirement to enable new activities
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tcp909/132665279/
Services must fit together like a large puzzle
8. Think Platforms
Facebook - created a richer offering with less resources
!
iPhone - $100+mil market out of thin air
!
Twitter - who knows
!
It’s no longer Open Source but Open API
9. Follow the consumer
Unlike the old days of office suites and team collaboration tools,
!
social networks, blogs, wikis, & tweeting didn’t grow from large
enterprise offerings
It took a significant consumer adoption before enterprise could
!
realize the value
The same is in store for what’s to come with hosted services
!
(cloud computing)
Due to corporate resistance, we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg
!
10. Overheard on the internet
“Hosted services are not as powerful”
!
“I want to own my data”
!
“I want full customization options”
!
“How can I trust you?”
!
11. How does a brand new company earn the trust of
100,000 people to hand over their most private
financial data within 4 months of launch?
12. Bucking the trend
Offer features unavailable anywhere else
!
Consistently improve the product so frequently, that in-house
!
maintenance becomes a drag
Solve a specific problem ‘really really’ well
!
Make the barrier-to-entry so low that alternate self-managed costs
!
become prohibitive
Offer a clear & measurable value
!
13. Why startups like cloud computing
Cost -> it’s practically free
!
Ease of Use
!
Less headaches
!
Allows a company to stay focused on their ‘core competency’
!
14. Customer Communication
Team Collaboration
Hosted Gmail Newsletters
(better than email)
Blogging
Google Calendar
Support Forum
Google Docs
Surveys & Forms
Google AppEngine
(for hosting side projects)
Hosted On
ISP
Servers
Amazon EC2 Code Repository
Amazon S3 No more CVS
15. Keep in mind
Hosted services need to ‘play well with others’ in order to thrive
!
Hosted services must be nimble to beat the competition
!
“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”
!
Because of corporate resistance but wide consumer adoption, there is
!
opportunity for bottom-up entry into organizations, just like blogging
and social networking.
16. Ciao !
