Big data explosion
• 90% of digital data today file-based or unstructured
• Mix of file sizes—but larger and larger files the norm
Growth and diversity in IP networks – Media, bandwidth rates & conditions
• Variable bandwidth rates (slow to super-fast)
• Bandwidth rates increasing—costs decreasing
• Network media remains diverse (terrestrial, satellite, wireless)
• Conditions vary—all networks prone to degradation over distance
Global workflows – real time experiences over WANs are expected
• Teams are geographically dispersed
• Over distance, network conditions degrade to majorly impact large transfers & streams
• Contemporary TCP acceleration solutions not designed for big data transfer and replication
Cloud computing matures
• More choices: IBM Cloud, AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google, Oracle, Alibaba, etc.
• No longer a niche – becoming prevalent across many industries including Media & Entertainment, Life Sciences,
Manufacturing & Engineering, Financial Services, Oil & Gas, etc.
Can’t reliably send, share, and sync large files and data sets over global internet
connections
Unable to move big data at high-speed with existing network bandwidth
Subject to slower times and more congestion for global file transfers across public
internet, corporate MPLS, wireless and mobile networks
Limited options to access and store data across cloud, hybrid or on-premises
infrastructures
Need greater security & more control in moving files & data sets to employees,
researchers, vendors, & external data centers, without impacting other traffic

Aspera on Cloud –
Features in preview
Summary: Aspera on Cloud secure package delivery will automatically encrypt at rest all files,
using a unique per session key. Unique key is stored in IBM key vault. Package receiver is
required to acknowledge sender delivery terms, prior to receiving an access key to the IBM key
vault. Access to the IBM key vault requires two factors: user ID and the access key to the vault.
With both factors, receiver can access the decryption key and proceed to decrypt file on
download.
Details of joint solution:
–Secure: Unique per session encryption key is automatically created as part of delivery session
initiation, used to encrypt the files on upload (server side encryption at rest) and added to the
IBM Key vault.
–Smart: Sender can assign customizable delivery terms, which is documented in hyperledger
smart contract.
–Transparent: All file movement, access to encryption keys, acknowledgement of terms and
decryption events are logged in hyperledger
–Verifiable: Hyperledger access is controlled by Aspera on Cloud and searchable for asset
delivery tracking, and decryption
In preview - trusted & verifiable package delivery
Powered by blockchain
Summary: This integrated solution with Irdeto will enable Aspera on Cloud package
delivery to automatically add a forensic watermark to files during download using a unique
per session identifier. Unique watermark identifiers are recorded to the hyperledger,
together with the receivers identifier. Package receiver is required to acknowledge sender
delivery terms, prior to being authorized to download the file.
Details of joint solution:
–Secure: Aspera on Cloud automatically and uniquely watermarks all files during
download
–Smart: Sender can require receiver to acknowledge specific delivery terms prior to
download. Terms and receiver acknowledgement are documented in hyperledger smart
contract.
–Transparent: All file movement, access to encryption keys, acknowledgement of terms
and watermark events are logged in hyperledger
–Verifiable: Hyperledger access is controlled by Aspera on Cloud and searchable for asset
delivery tracking, and watermarking
In preview - automatic file watermarking
Forensic watermarking powered by Irdeto
Summary: AoC Automation Application can automatically initiate file quality checking as
part of a file delivery. Upon arrival of a file, or just prior to the delivery of a file,
Automation workflow, makes an API call to Telestream QC to initiate the quality checking
of a file. Automation app can display the status of the QC job.
In preview - automatic file quality check
Quality checking - powered by Telestream
Details of integration:
–Automatic: Aspera on Cloud Automates file QC prior to or just after a file transfer.
–Smart: Automation app has a specific configurable action for Telestream QC. A QC
results report can be send out via email, API or package delivery.
–Managed: QC initiation is managed by Aspera on Cloud Automation app, and will be
offered as part of the Aspera on Cloud SaaS.
–Flexible: Telestream QC workflow jobs are configurable via the AoC Action
configuration.
In preview - multisession initiation and monitoring
Aspera clients and Aspera on Cloud support multisession transfers
Summary: Aspera Client and Management applications are now
aware of multisession transfers. Aspera Connect and Drive clients
can initiate multisession transfers. AoC Activity Application can
identify and display status of a multi-session transfer.
Details:
–Performance: Multisession transfers can scale across transfer
clusters, thereby enabling the total session speed to exceed the
limits of a single system.
–Configurable: Aspera Drive and Connect clients (preview) have a
configuration option to enable multisession transfers.
–Managed: Aspera on Cloud Activity app identifies multi-sessions
and displays them correctly. (preview)

Longer-term aspirations
• Prosumer/consumer playback scenarios
• Full portfolio available (mobile, desktop, browser, etc.)
• Turn-key type service, etc.
Best use case requirements
Key points of SMPTE 2022-7 Spec
• Cost effective error free transport of video is a constant goal
• As costs of redundant network paths decrease, sending redundant streams becomes more viable
• This standard defines requirements on redundant streams such that a receiver could switch
datagram by datagram without impact to the content or the stream
69
Live broadcast television in the past duplicated signals in case one of the signals had trouble. Simply,
redundant signal paths. That practice is still used and used in OTT (Over the Top) broadcast.
SMTPE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) came up with a specification to address

Currently in preview, this capability in the platform is done in the spirit of SMPTE-2022-7. It is agnostic to data type
and a closed system, hence the technology breaks from the interoperability of the standard.
While providing redundant transmission of data as a primary feature, this feature is able to manually (future:
automatically) alter an individual contributing data connection should it degrade in quality. For now, we can stop
and start connections on the fly without disrupting the data flow.

Key points ofSMPTE 2022-7 Spec • Cost effective error free transport of video is a constant goal • As costs of redundant network paths decrease, sending redundant streams becomes more viable • This standard defines requirements on redundant streams such that a receiver could switch datagram by datagram without impact to the content or the stream 69 Live broadcast television in the past duplicated signals in case one of the signals had trouble. Simply, redundant signal paths. That practice is still used and used in OTT (Over the Top) broadcast. SMTPE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) came up with a specification to address this issue within the context of the RTP, Realtime Transmission Protocol, known as SMPTE-2022-7. It is agnostic to data type and a closed system, hence the technology breaks from the interoperability of the standard. While providing redundant transmission of data as a primary feature, this feature is able to manually (future: automatically) alter an individual contributing data connection should it degrade in quality. For now, we can stop and start connections on the fly without disrupting the data flow.

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Since day 1, Aspera has been focused upon building next-generation transport technologies designed to overcome the challenges of size, distance and network conditions. Whether a large file, object, or stream, we’ve built a platform that moves the world’s digital assets at maximum speed. The technology has been ubiquitously adopted in media & entertainment but has been adopted across the board by a large number of industries.
  • #13 Fasp part 2 – security & reliability
  • #15 Perpetual Software License with annual support and maintenance Host license per server, point-to-point, and web application servers Based on aggregate bandwidth Add-ons for High-Availability Software as a Service (SaaS) New Aspera on Cloud sharing and exchange platform for big data and large media application platform Analytics reporting and data visualization SaaS offering hosted on IBM Cloud Aspera Developer Network Subscription service to comprehensive SDK, tools, utilities, sample code
  • #17 fasp Technology and Software Suite for Predictable, high-speed File-based Transfer Unique in the world, patented transport technology providing unparalleled speed, efficiency, concurrency and bandwidth control Fully integrated, cross platform software suite for interoperable file transfer — any size, any distance, and network BW Secure standard for the industry Integrated global management, tracking and reporting Extends to all Cloud based storage Extends to all major mobile platforms Key Business Areas E led with Latest Aspera Software high-speed Content Delivery, Synchronization and Distribution (including Cloud!) Ad Hoc Content Ingest, Delivery and Collaboration Integrated File Workflow Automation and Orchestration Mobile Platform File Delivery
  • #19 Key takeaway: Public and Private cloud markets are growing dramatically to augment and replace traditional IT Looking at some of the key trends in the IT market, we’ve noticed that: Organizations recognize the cloud’s ability to reduce IT costs, streamline IT administration, and speed application development. As a result, we’re seeing that many businesses have started to consolidate and migrate their data centers into the cloud. While the market size for traditional IT datacenters has shrunk, it is not going away. There are many use cases and environments that still require on-premises infrastructure.
  • #20 FTP & HTTP Timeouts - Due to the size, volume, and distance that files and data are being sent, FTP & HTTP transfers are too slow and tend to timeout before assets reach their destination Need for Faster Delivery - Shipping hard disks between offices or out to customers and business partners adds rigidity to the delivery process, delays collaboration amongst teams, and runs the risk of losing your data in transit Accessibility of Multi-Cloud & Hybrid Cloud Infrastructures - Files and data that need to be exchanged are often stored in multiple clouds and across on-premises systems, providing simple and secure access to that data can be difficult and risks exposure of a security hole Automating High-Volume Transfers - Creating scripts to schedule and automate transfers can become cumbersome and complex. Add in file processing pipelines (scanning, validating, parsing, and asset delivery), and users quickly realize the need for an easy-to-use tool to develop the automation. End-to-End Visibility - IT Administrators need to be able to track, manage, and report on transfers in real-time across multiple clouds and hybrid infrastructures from one centralized location. Security & Access Control - Need to enable information exchange with customers, partners, vendors, and other locations without opening security holes or risking loss of IP
  • #27 Key takeaway: IBM Aspera on Cloud is a hosted service that enables organizations to securely and reliably transfer, exchange, and deliver digital assets of any size at unrivaled speed. With support for hybrid-cloud infrastructures and all market-leading public clouds, customers can instantly access and transfer large files and data sets spread across the globe in on-premises data centers and cloud storage. Administrators gain end-to-end visibility into the transfer environment using the service’s real-time, centralized monitoring, management and reporting tools. The service provides easy, high-speed access to all of your data spread across a hybrid-cloud environment
  • #29 Key takeaway: Customers who adopt Aspera on Cloud are able to realize key business benefits
  • #46 Pratt and whitney- Use case demonstrating use of SaaS capability to create collaboration between enterprises and their partners with IBM Cloud as the collection point Manufacturing is the most affected by cyber breaches to steal intellectual property https://www.cyberscoop.com/manufacturing-companies-got-wrecked-cyber-spies-last-year-according-verizon/
  • #53 Establish the primary pain points and limited options customers have with streaming broadcast quality video
  • #54 Talk about how all the reasons the media and entertainment business would like to use standard internet to stream high-quality content
  • #55 Why is it so hard to get to next gen Contribution? Network protocol limitations & problems (TCP, UDP) Forward error correction (FEC) & other other correction measures Varying availability of bandwidth at contribution sites Security requirements Systems that encode and decode are on a completely separate network from Internet Concerns over sending on public internet Cost / technology is catching up Increasing amount of feeds to customer Growing 4K/HDR content Soloed Systems Cost Measures Change is hard • What I’m using already works. It’s been proven forever. I’d on’t want to risk my job.
  • #56 Transfer to and from cloud channel origination
  • #59 Uses no forward error correction Aspera FASP protocol’s reliability technology, ensures that lost data is retransmitted at a statistically ideal rate. The bandwidth overhead due to redundant data is the minimum possible and many times less than FEC - over 25X less over long haul Internet Datagrams that make up the video frames in the stream can be guaranteed to arrive in time for playback with negligible start up delay, assuming bandwidth equal to the stream rate
  • #63 Greatly simplified administration of streams from a single, easy-to-use interface, which nearly eliminates stream setup time Lower deployment effort and operational costs with the quick auto-discovery of devices connected to a customer’s IP-based network Increased control & security of streaming workflows Valuable visibility of location, device and stream details to operations and production staff Service engagement to install and configure application. App customization engagement is optional
  • #71 Previously the Aspera High Speed Transfer Service had no ability to aggregate multiple instances into one final output. Redundancy of a single stream/transfer/transmission was only possible by having multiple instances duplicate the output individually with no ability to automatically switch between the outputs.
