1. The document summarizes a case study conducted by the student at Gloria Jean's Café located in Arsia Shopping Mall on two different dates - Sunday, November 12th and Tuesday, December 20th.
2. On both visits, the student observed the activities, people, and functions within the café. They also took photos and analyzed different subspaces within the café based on ergonomic standards.
3. The first subspace analyzed was a seating area in the sun porch, where the student had unpleasant experiences eating cake and writing due to uncomfortable furniture and cigarette smoke in the area.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

People/ functions etc.:
In weekdays, it is usually very crowded because it is too close to the Başkent University,
(80-90 people which are mostly the students from Başkent University) However, in
weekends only people who live around prefer to go. The roles within the space have varied.
Mostly, there are only 1 barista, 1 waiter and a cashier in the café. The café has self-service
and self-selection options, so waiter also services to the tables, cleans and gets payment.
Barista makes the coffee. Other people have different role depending on their purpose.
They can use place for eating or drinking or go there for chatting with their friends and etc.
Also the owner is mostly in the coffee, so he has a chance to take feedbacks from the
clients.
First/general impression:
In Arsia Shopping Mall, Gloria Jean’s Coffee is a prominent because of the place it takes. It
is at the corner of shopping mall and has a vision of 2 main streets. Firstly, I went café on
11th
December 2016, Sunday.
The Gloria Jean’s Café seemed nice and elegant from the outside and has welcoming
entrance. Before you enter the place, first thing that caught by eyes was the New Year
decorations on the doors and windows. After you entered from the main door, I was in the
sun porch at first which is good in terms of not only natural light but also for the furniture
which are selected. I feel fresh and spacious for that place. I think this is the reason why
most people preferred to sit at the outside which is closed by the windows. (Sun Porch)
Another reason why people prefer this place can be not only for the natural light, it is a
smoking area when the windows are opened. In that time some of the sun porch windows
are opened so people who preferred to sit there were smoking. That is the reason why I
selected inside of the coffee for the analysis at first. After I passed throughout the sun porch,
I faced with the glass door which also decorated for the New Year theme. (Photograph 2)
As I entered the closed area (where a refrigerator, case, coffee machine and the some of
the tables and chairs take place), the signboard caught by my eyes because of the red
colour. (Photograph 3) After I order the coffee, I heard the music from the background. It
was not in the high volume but the music is fast and the coffee machine made disturbing
noise. That’s why I did not feel comfortable while I was waiting to prepare my coffee.
However, it was good for me because I had a chance to look at which place was available
for me to sit and analyse. I had lots of chance for selection since there did not have many
people in the weekend, which made me very pleasant.
However, I feel that I was not sure this analyse were enough. Thus, I went there on Tuesday
(20/12/2016) and stayed a while and took notes of what I feel. I realized that they made
4. 4
some decorations on the main door of the café, which I took photograph and added later.
(Photograph 1) On Tuesday, it was more crowded than the Sunday because of the Başkent
University’s students. The first thing that I do was sit in the subspace 2 and wait for a while
to understand the difference between Sunday and Tuesday. Then I changed my place with
the subspace 1 and decided to alter some activities. (Actually, I choose the activity eating
and drinking for subspace 3 at first but then I changed it with eating and writing which
creates variety between activities.) Then I heard the music which was better than the
Sunday. There can be 2 reasons why the music was not very high. First reason might be the
selected music genre was different than Sunday and there is no sound on Sunday which
was focal point at that time.

1 Sensory requirements
This is the first place that I choose for the eating and drinking activity on Tuesday. The
first thing that I did is order a coffee and cake. While I was waiting for the coffee and
cake, the smell of smoke made me very uncomfortable. Most of the people in the sun
porch were smoking and chatting because the top of the porch was opened. There
were lots of people come and go in the circulation path. However, I could not take a
deep breath. The reason was cigarette smoke was not go outside from the top because
of the wind. After my orders came, I eat it but still the smell made me so uncomfortable.
The thing that I had to do for eating was bending because of the height of table in the
centre of the seating unit. After I ate a little bit from my cake I could not continue to eat
because of the smell and decided to do the other activity which is writing a diary.
6. 6
2 Encountered artifacts/spatial elements
The glass of coffee is a little bit heavy. Although this space has natural light come from
the outside; it has lots of problematic issues in terms of furniture. The sponge of the
furniture is probably very old or used a lot. It seems like it is comfortable but it is the
most uncomfortable seats in terms of posture problems. (Photograph 7 and 9) Also, the
corner of the furniture (Photograph 11) is not used a lot for people because they cannot
loll against the back of the furniture. Another thing which I problematic is the texture of
the chairs. They are not in straight position. As you can see from the photograph 10
and 11 it has lots of crumpled on top which creates the idea of how old this furniture is.
On the positive side of encounters, I can say that the plate has very smooth surface so
that it does not feel very seductive while I was cutting the cake. Also, it is good that my
heels have not touch any place while I was sitting. (There is empty space at the bottom
as you can see from the photograph 10)
3 Ergonomic requirements / analysis of existing (may be more than one).
The furniture has not very appropriate backrest. (Not curvilinear.)
The width of the chair is longer than the standard but this problem solved by the
pillow. (Buttock-popliteal Length-5% Female:51.5 cm In café: 59 cm)
The relation of the table and chair is not good at all (Buttock-Knee Length 95%
male: 63.5 cm)
The heights of the chair (Popliteal Height-5% Female: 36.5 cm, In café: 32.5
cm) and table are not in the standards. (At least knee height has to be
considered-5% Female:45.5 cm In café: 45 cm but it is not good for eating)
Experience analysis (pleasant/unpleasant/effects)
The experience was unpleasant in terms of the height of the table and chair. Actually I
could not realize the backrest until I measure it because what I did was bending and
eating without any back support.
4. Unintentional/naturally occurring encounters
The most important thing was the smell of the smoke. The place is near the windows
which were a little bit open, all the smell came to my face without my control.
Experience analysis (pleasant/unpleasant/effects)
The smell of smoke made me almost feel like a sick. What I did was basically took
some notes immediately and changed my place.
7. 7
5. Comparison (with other analysed activities and/or subspaces)
This is the most uncomfortable and disturbing space among the other subspaces I
experienced. Not only for unintentional occurring encounters made me feel like that, but
also seating unit is not comfortable as well. Also, the activity that I select from that
space is not very appropriate in terms of ergonomic standards. It might be better in the
“Subspace 3” because of the height of the tables and chairs. The texture of the
furniture is not comfortable as well and the corrugation in the armrest makes the
armrest most uncomfortable and disturbing part of the furniture.

Activity type/ subspace: Writing a Diary / Subspace 1 Duration: 15 minutes
1 Sensory requirements
After the eating experience, I continued with the writing experience. First thing that I did
was using the corner of the table and started to write. (Photograph 13&14) After a
while, I changed my position and sit up straight and continued to write. (Photograph 15)
2 Encountered artifacts/spatial elements
The book had very thick cover and textured paper. Also the surface of the table is
smooth which is a positive side of the table. Because of my uncomfortable position, I
changed it like in the photograph 15. It was better than the first position. I do not have
any chance to use the armrest because it is very corrugated.
3 Ergonomic requirements / analysis of existing (may be more than one)
It is almost same with the previous ergonomic requirements.
Armrest of the seating unit: the length of the armrest is centimetres. It can be
changed according to the design purpose. However, the corrugated texture of
the armrest is not very beneficial in terms of function.
Experience analysis (pleasant/unpleasant/effects)
I felt very bad when I cannot use the place for writing. After I came to home and looked
at my handwriting, I do not like it.
4. Unintentional/naturally occurring encounters
It is written in the previous experience. (Smoking)
Experience analysis (pleasant/unpleasant/effects)
It is written in the previous experience. (Smoking)
5. Comparison (with other analysed activities and/or subspaces)
In addition to the previous analysis, I would like to add that the place is not effective in
terms of writing as well. When you looked at the place at first, it seems like very
comfortable, whereas the reality is totally opposite.

Photograph 19 Photograph 20
Photograph 21
1 Sensory requirements:
This is the second place that I select for the analysis. The reason why I choose this
place is this is the only interior space which has natural light. I wanted to use laptop in
there as well. The first thing that I did was putting the laptop and found a good place for
not falling. (Photograph 16) After that I continued with the writing but I cannot use
backrest of the table. The inside was very cold so that I needed to benefit from natural.
I took some breaks for natural light and use the backrest (Photograph 18) After some
time I finished my analysis.
On Tuesday, I wanted to make sure what can be analysed from that area. Thus, I sit
there on Tuesday and realized something very important. There is a row for the
restrooms which made me feel very disturbing. Because most of the people were
10. 10
waiting outside of the restroom to use, it really disturbs people who prefer to sit
Subspace 2’s chair.
2 Encountered artifacts/spatial elements
The most important thing about that space is the design of the table. It can be circular
but it has some margins (Photograph 19). Because e of that margins I could not place
my laptop in a good position. Additionally, the legs of the table are not attached to the
surface of the table. The texture of the chair is really good in terms of not caused any
slip. However, the height is not very good that I had to sit like in the photograph 17.
3 Ergonomic requirements / analysis of existing (may be more than one).
The width of the chair (Buttock-popliteal Length-5% Female:51.5 cm In café: 61
cm)
It has armrest which can be easily used and covered with the fabric. (5 cm)
The furniture has straight backrest.
The width of the chair is longer than the standard but this problem solved by the
pillow.
The relation of the table and chair is not good at all (Buttock-Knee Length 95%
male: 63.5 cm) So that I had to sit at the corner of the chair.
The heights of the chair (Popliteal Height-5% Female: 36.5 cm, In café: 4 cm)
and table are almost in the standards but not very good. (At least knee height
has to be considered-5% Female:45.5 cm In café:55 cm but it is not good for
eating)
Experience analysis (pleasant/unpleasant/effects)
It has not very pleasant or unpleasant. I can say that I is neutral because the texture is
good. I feel comfortable for that texture but have some problems in the ergonomic
requirements which are not very big deal when the natural light is considered.
4. Unintentional/naturally occurring encounters
On Sunday, I realize the natural light entered my galley when I moved. This is the only
unintentional occurring encounter.
Experience analysis (pleasant/unpleasant/effects)
I felt very hot in that area because of the natural light. So, I can say that it was
pleasant.
11. 11
5. Comparison (with other analysed activities and/or subspaces)
This space is in between the other two one. It has natural light comes from the outside
as subspace 1 and also have fresh area. However, the seating unit is worse than the
subspace 3. Subspace 3 is better in terms of writing, studying and other activities like
that, although it has lots of noise. The positive aspect of the subspace 2 is there is no
noise or distracting by the main circulation so that I can focus easily.
12. 12

Activity type/ subspace: Using Laptop/ Subspace 3 Duration: 20 minutes
Photograph 22 Photograph 23
Photograph 24 Photograph 25
1 Sensory requirements:
This is the third subspace which I analysed. The place is the table in front of the coffee
machine as shown in the sketch. The first thing that I did is put my bags and
13. 13
documents on the table and hanged my coat on the one of the chairs. (Photograph 22)
I sit the chair and opened my laptop and start to open files on the laptop. (Photograph
23) I read the instructions about the case study and started to make sketch of the
place. However, I have not finished the sketch. After the drawing basis of sketch, I
started to write the analysis. Fortunately, at that time, somebody come in and ordered
something so that I can analyse the place better in terms of both function and the
proximity of the main circulation.
2 Encountered artifacts/spatial elements:
The texture of the floor is like a fibrous. Thus my feed did not slip while I was writing.
The texture of the table is also fibrous but I had some problems while I was sketching.
That is the main reason why I finished my sketch at home. Table is good in terms of
putting lots of stuffs on it and doing some research but not good enough for writing,
drawing, sketching. I needed to put some books or other stuffs which has smooth
surface but I preferred to not to do that at that time. Also, the laptop is not very
comfortable with regards to posture problem. (I get to use desktop computer mostly) I
had to bend most of the time.
3 Ergonomic requirements / analysis of existing (may be more than one).
The height of the chair from the floor is good in terms of comfortable sitting
(Buttock-Knee Length-5% Female:51.5 cm In café: 59 cm)
The chair has backrest which is curvilinear
There is no armrest but I did not feel the absence of the armrest because of the
table.
The normal working area (Elbow Fingertip Length -5% Female: 39.5 cm. I used
most of the space but cannot measure the normal working area )
The width of the chair is 44 cm. The texture is smooth and polished but this
problem solved by the pillow. (Buttock-Popliteal Length-5% Female:43.5cm)
Experience analysis (pleasant/unpleasant/effects)
While I was writing, I realized how the seating place is comfortable and it is good for
writing activity, although it seemed uncomfortable at first glance. Since the table has
enough place to put my documents, equipment and other stuffs on the table and it
made me relax. I could reach everything without any extra effort. The chair seems very
uncomfortable but when I sit, I felt like it is comfortable in any sense. (Photograph 25)
My legs are in a good position. The elbow height is not problematic. The only thing that
disturbed me is the sound of coffee machine but the machined were not used always, it
was not a big issue. Shortly, I feel very pleasant.
4. Unintentional/naturally occurring encounters
On Sunday, the place was not very crowded that’s why I can focus on my homework.
However, while I was doing my homework somebody gets in the café and ordered a
coffee. The barista prepared and served coffee and person went out.
14. 14
Experience analysis (pleasant/unpleasant/effects)
The place of the chair I selected (next to the main circulation path) is not very good
because when somebody gets in the café, the place became immediately cold and I
disturbed by person who order coffee. It might be better if I were selected the chair
which is at the end of that row. Also, when person who ordered something, the coffee
machine made noise a lot so I my focus has disappeared immediately.
5. Comparison (with other analysed activities and/or subspaces)
This is the most comfortable subspace in the café. It has very comfortable chairs and
table although table some problematic texture. The first place is for smoking, and the
second subspace near the restroom, I feel like I sit in the dirty and unhealthy place.
There is no smoking area in the place which is very health in terms of not only for me
but also everyone in the place. Most probably, this is the place where I will sit in my
future experiences.
