3. International Airport:
Hong Kong International Airport
 Main airport in Hong Kong
 It is located on the island of Chek Lap
Kok which largely comprises
land reclaimed for the construction of
the airport itself.
 The airport is also colloquially known
as Chek Lap Kok Airport (赤鱲角機場),
to distinguish it from its predecessor, the
closed Kai Tak Airport.
 The airport is operated by the Airport
Authority Hong Kong 24 hours a day

 Chek Lap Kok Airport was
designed as a replacement for
the former Hong Kong
International Airport (commonly
known as Kai Tak Airport) built in
1925.
 The airport increased the land
area of Hong Kong by 1%. The
airport opened for business
in July 1998 having taken just six
years to build.

 HKIA is an important contributor to Hong Kong's economy, with approximately
65,000 employees. More than 100 airlines operate flights from the airport to
over 180 cities across the globe. In 2015, HKIA handled 68.5 million
passengers, making it the 8th busiest airport worldwide by passenger
traffic. Since 2010, it has also surpassed Memphis International Airport to
become the world's busiest airport by cargo traffic.[5]

passengers and 4.52 million tonnes
of air cargo. It is connected to
about 190 destinations, including
42 in the Mainland, through
around 1,100 daily flights by more
than 100 airlines.

complex
 The airport open for business in 1999.
 During 1999, only one flight per a day (Mardin-Ankara)
