Introduction
• I3S means Idle Stop Start System.
• It is a green technology that automatically
shuts engine when idling and turns it on when
needed.
• It reduces the fuel consumption effectively
and efficiently.
History
• It is first developed in 1964 by Toyota.
• Testing of it shows about 10% improvement in
fuel economy.
• Four wheeler having this technology were the
Fiat Regma “ES” and Volkswagen Polo “Formel
E”.
• Firstly in Hero motorbike in 2013.
• Two wheeler having this technology were
Hero splendor i-smart , new passion pro.

5 I3S TECHNOLOGY
(2015)
Pradip Arun Manatkar,
Darshan Ramrao Rathod,
Minal Gangadhar Bhugul
As mileage of the Hero Splendor i-
smart is greater than other bikes
having same cc engine cylinder.
just only because of
implementation of I3S technology
Problem Statement
• Less mileage of vehicles.
• More CO2 emission causes pollution.
• More fuel consumption.
• More engine noise and vibration when in
standstill condition.
• More usage of fuel during idle running of engine.
Working in two wheeler
• It uses battery, electric generator ,electric
starter, Electronic Control Unit (ECU), speed
sensor.
• It uses regenerative braking, where rotational
energy of wheel turns the electric generator
and generates electricity.
• When speed is 0 km/hr, sensor sense and
sends the signal to ECU then 1 min timer get
started and after 1 min ECU shuts the engine.
• With the help of ECU it uses generated energy
to start the engine when clutch is pressed.
Block diagram of I3S technology
Conditions to stop the engine automatically:
• Vehicle speed is zero.
• Gear box in Neutral.
• I3S feature should be on.
Conditions to start the enigine automatically:
• Engine speed is zero.
• Vehicle speed is zero.
• Gear box is in Neutral.
• I3S feature is should be on.
• Clutch is pressed fully.
Advantages of I3S technology
• Fuel consumption is reduced by up to 5% -
10% in city driving.
• CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 7% - 8%
• Engine restarts within 350 milliseconds and in
complete silence.
• Implementation cost is not very high.
• Engine stops and starts automatically.
• Eliminates engine noise and vibrations.
Disadvantages of I3S technology
• Fuel saving is not as good as fully Hybrid.
• Some vehicle function may not run when
engine is off. ( e.g. Air conditioner in cars)
• In four wheeler it require special type of
battery and starter.
• Even though Implementation is cheap, vehicle
manufacturer will charge huge amount for
vehicles with I3S system.
Application
• Hero splendor i-smart bike.
• New passion pro
• Mahindra and Mahindra has introduced the
stop start based Micro Hybrid system.
• Fiat introduced this system in inflate 500.
• Volkswagen polo , golf & Passat.
• Many BMW cars
Conclusion
• More than 50% of the newly registered
vehicles will have start-stop as standard
technology after 2013.
• This system raises the alarm to the society to
cut CO2 emission, save fuel and preserve the
nature .
• This is very cost effective system useful in two
wheelers to save fuel, CO2 emission, nature
and global warming.
FUTURE SCOPE
• As it is less costly to implement in a bikes or in
cars, so can be implemented in most of the newly
manufactured vehicles.
• With the use of this technology in maximum
vehicle, emissions and noise will reduced up to
certain extent and helps to maintain green
environment.
• As it improves mileage it helps in minimum
usage of fuel so decreasing demand of fuel up to
certain extent.
