The number of incidents that Child Protective Services (CPS) investigates annually in the United States is over two million alleged incidents of child abuse, 18 percent of physical abuse, 650,000 are confirmed to be physical violence, and neglect or abuse claims 1500 lives of children each year, with 80 percent being children under the age of four. Psychological and somatic symptoms, as well as psychological and medical diagnosis, including depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic pain syndromes, chronic fatigue syndrome, and irritable bowel disorder, have been correlated with childhood violence.
From exposure to traumatic incidents in which they are victims of physical and sexual assault, domestic violence, motor vehicle accidents, serious medical disease, natural or human-created disasters, a large number of children and adolescents can experience PTSD (Sadock, Sadock, & Ruiz, 2017).
Assessing for Abuse

Problem to be addressed. The first cases of AIDS in the United States were reported in New Yolk City and Los Angeles in 1981, but since then the epicenter of the country's HIV epidemic has shifted to the District of Columbia and the 16 states that make up the South, from urban centers. Today, the South is the most affected region and carries the greatest burden of HIV illnesses, deaths, and infection than any other region in the U.S, Rosenberg et al. (2015) reports.
Problem subtopic. Southern states alone account for 44 percent of all individuals infected with HIV in the U.S; surprisingly the region has approximately one-third of the overall population in the U.S. Southern states experience internal disparities due to their geographical position. The majority of people living with HIV live in urban areas just like the rest of the nation, Abara et al. (2015).
Possible Causes and Maintaining Forces
Cause. Unique socioeconomic factors in the South are the primary cause of the heavy burden of HIV. Poverty, poorer health facilities, income inequality, have been more prevalent in the Southern states than the rest of the country. These conditions are not unique to HIV and, overall, the populations in the region have long experienced poorer health outcomes. Among the health challenges are higher rates of diabetes, cancer, obesity as well as infant mortality compared to other areas, Hall et al. (2015) highlight.
Cause. Cultural factors and social barriers also contribute to worsening HIV infection in the South of the United States. Issues such as transphobia, homophobia, racism as well as a lack of openness in discussing sexuality in public are more common in the South, and they result in higher levels of stigma, limiting people's willingness to look for HIV testing, prevention, and care services. The challenges also restrict access to sexual health information which is critical to enable individuals to protect themselves from infection, according to Reif et al. (2015). Many people in South America are fearful or ignorant of HIV. Transgender women and men who have sex with men face high levels of discrimination and stigma putting them at risk of homicide and crimes. Since 2008, about 1,200 transgender individuals have been killed in South America. Furthermore, 44-70 percent of transgender women have expressed the need to relocate or were thrown out of their homes (Skarbinski et al., 2015).

just how much advertising and media not only influence our purchases, but also our identity, values, and
perceptions. Advertisements can be found all around us: In magazines, commercials, popups, while using
the internet, social media, apps, and even on billboards while we drive. Corporations spend large amounts
of money to try and sell us things on a daily basis. However, they are not only trying to sell us products,
they attach ideologies, and psychological strategies using logical, ethical, and emotional appeals to
persuade us.
In this essay, I will ask you to consider the topics we have discussed in this course, and how they
are used in media and advertisements. You will analyze a printed advertisement and use it as a visual
text, and just like a textual analysis you will explain its various layers, from what it is depicting on the
surface, to the message it is trying to convey, and how and why it is conveying it. What are they showing
you? What are they trying to make you think? Who is their target audience? What specific elements of the
ad are used to communicate its message, and reach its target audience? Consider not only rhetorical
appeals such as ethos, pathos, and logos, but also other layers such as how space is used in the ad, text,
colors, body language, etc. ( Do not just point out what a specific element is doing, elaborate on the
significance).
Directions: 1. Find a full-page real (not fake) advertisement, either from a magazine or online. 2. Analyze
the ad and formulate a clear thesis that distinguishes what the message, target audience, and purpose are.
3. Develop body paragraphs that explain your thesis (one aspect per paragraph). 4. After a thorough
analysis, explain if the ad is effective and how or why it is or is not effective. What is the significance of
