The document discusses i-MO, an intelligent mobile technology device that provides wireless broadband connectivity for construction project sites. It was developed to address challenges with installing fixed broadband connections for short-term projects, which often experience delays or lack connectivity in critical early stages. i-MO utilizes multiple 3G data channels and external antennas to provide reliable, high-speed access to a corporate network from anywhere on a job site. Site managers and engineers praise i-MO for enabling instant productivity and communication as soon as they arrive on site.

data communications
Utilises 3 G Data Network
Two bonded data channels
Managed Service
3. Why was developed?
70,000 construction projects started in the
UK in 2005
Powered by i-MO : Intelligent Mobile Technology
40,000 of these had a project duration of 6
months or less
It takes on average between 6-10 weeks to
install a new broadband connection
25% of contracts complete before landlines
are installed
4. Implications for Projects
Voice only communications
Courier charges
Powered by i-MO : Intelligent Mobile Technology
Reduced productivity
• E.g Site manager offsite to collect emails
Unpredictable dialup costs
Drain on IT resource supporting
connectivity issues on remote sites
“Arguably the start of a contract is the most critical time for the receipt
of construction information, drawings, specifications etc.”
Neill Pawsey, Jacksons
5. What was needed?
Quick Install and Site Set-up
High Speed access to corporate LAN
Powered by i-MO : Intelligent Mobile Technology
Resilient connectivity
Simple to use and configure
Low cost
6. Key Features of
Two channels with true bandwidth aggregation
External Antennas

Integrated VPN (IPSEC/SSL) Client
Integrated Firewall
Local file shares
Local Web Cache/Proxy
Packet Shaping
WiFI Access Point
ADSL Support

7. …but don’t just take our word
for it?
i-MO wins major Construction Industry
Powered by i-MO : Intelligent Mobile Technology
Award!
The judging criteria were that the entry
had to be able to prove that over a twelve
month period, the technology made an
impact on a business by reducing costs,
shortening timescales, increasing
productivity, improved reliability and
higher quality over previous
methodologies used.
8. Site Feedback
“Access to information and emails as
soon as you are on site; the rest of the
world expects you to be able to pick
up emails so you tend to struggle and
look inept if you can't“
Teresa Jeffcoat, Site Engineer
(EA Framework Project – Nottingham)
9. Site Feedback
“We have used i-Mo on a number of
smaller site on our Cambridgeshire
County Council Framework
contract. It is easy to set up and it
has given us the benefit of
connectivity where previously we
would have had none“
Jamie Boast, Site Agent, Jackson Civil Engineering
(Cambridgeshire CC Framework Project)
10. Business advantages
• One i-MO can be used on 3-4 projects in one year
• Data budgeting for projects easier and more predictable
using i-MO
• When i-MO deployed, the site can be instantly
productive
• Communication and information flow more reliable as it
is passed via data
• More Competitive in the marketplace as we can deploy
to sites and start projects faster and more efficiently
11. i-MO
• i-MO aggregates the bandwidth on multiple SIM cards
• Provides adequate bandwidth even when only GPRS
• The use of external aerials improves performance
• Rapid deployment – 10 minutes to install and
everybody is up and running
12. What were our problems?
• Our site teams need access to the corporate network
as soon as a job starts, and for the whole of its
duration
• The ICT team get short notice of a contract starting
• Lead times from BT mean we cannot get fixed
communications links installed in the timescales
required
• The site establishment can move during the life of a
project
• Communication links can fail
13. Constraints
• At the time we first investigated this we ran a
completely closed network with no VPN capability
• We run applications that are sensitive to latency
• Cost
• We needed something that was easy to install and
uninstall and could be moved around from site to site
as required
15. The GPRS/3G Card Option
• Users had connectivity, even if it was slow
• As long as they could get a signal, they could use the
system anywhere, not just on site
• Costs were hard to control
• Users continue to use the cards after the fixed network
installed
• Performance issues caused by contention and poor
signal strength
• Difficult to support
16. GPRS/3G Router option
• This option has been used by another company in the
Shepherd Group
• Has the same advantages as the card option
• Shares one 3G card between users on site
• Avoids the problems of cards being used after the
fixed line has been put in
• Reduces support issues
• Very slow if only GPRS available
18. Managing User Expectations
• The user has to know that there is limited bandwidth
• Updating the cache on a new laptop should only be
done overnight
• Try not to all turn on machines at the same time in the
morning
• Only keep essential applications open
• In the worst case, use Web Outlook instead of the full
client
