Joseph Henry is running 500 miles from Washington D.C. to the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada to raise awareness and $100,000 for the United Nations World Food Program's Universities Fighting World Hunger initiative. He was motivated to take on this challenge after attending the World Hunger Summit in Alabama, where he heard stories of people performing feats to help those in need. Henry has been training extensively for the long run, which will take place in the cold winter months, including weight training, plyometrics, and running 20+ mile training runs consecutively to prepare his body for the physical demands of the 500 mile run.

2. Joseph Henry, who is from Sonoma County, California, has a passion for
helping people. He works as a weight-room manager at the Campus
Recreation Center, which promotes exercise and living a healthy lifestyle.
Henry earned a master’s degree from the UAB School of Public Health. The
school and Nestlé Canada and the University of Guelph is sponsoring
Henry which will help him to achieve his goal. Henry found out about the
UFWH during his studies in The Sparkman Center for Global Health, which
aims to improve health conditions in less-developed countries. He applied
for a scholarship to the UFWH conference in Auburn between 2010 to 2011
and his application was accepted.

3. What motivated Joseph Henry
Joseph Henry was motivated to do the 500 mile run after attending the
World Hunger Summit in Alabama. He heard stories about normal
people living ordinary lives performing impressive feats for the poor, so
he was motivated to help those who are in need. So, he made the
decision to help people suffering from hunger and poverty, which is the
reason how the run to raise awareness and money came about. He was
also interested in doing long distance runs, thus the idea of a run piqued
his interests. He was also impressed when he heard about a man
running 3 marathons in 3 consecutive days to raise awareness and
money- and the distance he covered was 78.6 miles.

4. Challenges Joseph Henry Faced
Henry said. “If I only trained by running in a straight line every day I would be setting
myself up to fail. If something is going to get hurt, I need to be really well rounded to
complete this. I’ve been running a lot, but I’ve also been weight training and performing
just about any other physical activity I can do.”
Henry has been training for a long time for his winter run. The run will definitely bring in
the cold of the Northeast. He has been working out with a personal trainer very closely,
combining a workout routine of weight-lifting and plyometrics to strengthen muscles.
Henry also has gotten better in his running, doing several days of 20-plus mile runs
consecutively. He also had to change his diet. Henry was a vegetarian but now he is
starting to eat meat to increase this protein intake.
