Joseph Henry, an MPH candidate, was inspired to start the Hunger 500 run after attending a world hunger summit. The goal of Hunger 500 was to raise awareness about hunger and raise $100,000 for the UN Food Programme by having Henry run 500 miles from Washington DC to Ontario, Canada over 17 days. The first Hunger 500 run took place in February 2011 when Henry was motivated to help the millions suffering from hunger worldwide. The impact of Hunger 500 was raising awareness of hunger issues and inspiring donations to help hungry people around the world.
