Floods occur when water overflows or accumulates over land that is usually dry. They can develop slowly from sustained rainfall or snowmelt or quickly from flash floods. Floods are studied in hydrology and cause damage if homes are in flood plains, though people are also drawn to rivers for fertile land and transportation. Different types of floods include flash floods, riverine floods from rain or snowmelt overwhelming channels, coastal floods from storm surges, and urban floods from overwhelmed drainage. The deadliest floods in history include three Chinese floods between 1887-1938 that caused between 700,000 and 3.7 million deaths.
