CAREER ANCHORS
Introduction
• A career anchor is ‘that one element in a person’s self-
concept that he or she will not give up, even in the face
of difficult choices’
• In Career anchors: Discovering your real values, Edgar
Schein explores how personality, motivation and values
affect career choices and preferences, through the
metaphor of an anchor which pulls people towards
specific role types in their work life.
Interview
• Lets interview and analyze the career anchor
of Mr. Chandan B.Lund -
Please find attached herewith the video along with the PPT
Brief interview
• Let me brief about his career approach. Earlier, he was
working for a marketing and sales company and then
wanted to pursue his masters in marketing. He failed to
continue with further studies due to his health issues.
• Currently, he is looking forward to work with Digicliff, a
marketing company for minimum 2 years to gain
experience and further planning to pursue his Masters in
Marketing. His career aspirations are to work with a
digital marketing company in future.
Analysis
• After interviewing and analyzing him, his career
approach is towards stability/ security as he satisfies this
approach.
• Stability/Security – Job stability is the priority for this
group of employees.
• They are risk – averse and generally remain with the
company for a very long time.
• The value is illustrated by a concern for financial security
(such as pension and retirement plans) or employment
security. Such stability may involve trading his loyalty
and willingness to do whatever the employer wants from
him for some promise of job tenure.
Analysis (cont..)
• He is less concerned with the content of his work and the
rank he achieves in the organization, although he may
achieve a high level if his talents permit.
• As with autonomy, everyone has certain needs for
security and stability, especially at times when financial
burdens may be heavy or when one is facing retirement.
People are biased in this way, however, they are always
concerned with these issues and build their entire self-
images around the management of security and stability.
• To sum it up, he satisfies the above mentioned points.
