At the factory, Iqbal would begin work around 6 a.m., working 14–hour days with one 30–minute break for lunch. The conditions in the factory were
very poor with very little lighting and no fresh air. The children that worked there were not allowed to speak and were often beaten if the broke the
rules or made mistakes. When Iqbal was 10 years old, he was severely beaten by the factory owner, a man named Arshbad, and decided to escape
and report it to the police. When the police looked the other way, Iqbal was forced to return to the factory and was chained to his loom. Some time
later, Iqbal escaped and went to a meeting of the Bonded Labour Liberation Front, an organization whose goal was to free Pakistan's bonded
workers. Here Iqbal listened to a man named Kahn talk and spoke to him afterward. With Kahn's help, Iqbal was free and started to attend a school
operated by the BLLF. Iqbal became a crusader for the rights of children, addressing crowds across India and Pakistan. His work had a large impact,
reducing the export demand once people in developed nations heard of the conditions in the factories. Iqbal was awarded the Reebok Human Rights
award in 1994 and continued to study hard at school with dreams of becoming a lawyer and fighting for children's rights. Because his work had

V. INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE International labour standards characterize child work by its outcomes; it includes work that is rationally,
physically, socially or ethically perilous and destructive to children, and meddles with their educating. UNICEF characterizes child work as work
that surpasses a base number of hours, contingent upon the age of a child and on the sort of work. The 18th International Conference of Labor
Statisticians held at Geneva held that Child work (slated for nullification) ought to reflect the engagement of children in undesirable exercises and
could fall into the accompanying classes:(i) Labour that is performed by a child who is below the minimum age specified for that kind of work and
that is thus likely to impede the child's education and full development. (ii) Labour that jeopardizes the health, safety or morals of a child, either
because of its nature or because of the conditions in which it is carried out (known as hazardous work). (iii) The worst forms of child labour other
than hazardous work which are internationally defined to encompass children (persons below 18 years of age) in slavery, trafficking, debt bondage
and other forms of forced labour, forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict, their use in prostitution and pornography, and illicit activities

Child labor is now a global concern and has attracted attention of people in various sectors of the global economy. As a matter of fact International
labor organization (ILO), the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other international communities considers child labor completely abusive and
ruthless. It is also considered to be derived from unequal society and therefore could be said that poverty and unequal distribution of wealth within the
society makes children to go to work and in many cases to look after their family. The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that there are
about 250 million economically active children worldwide. 61% of these workers are in Asia, which equals to approximately 153 million children. In
Sub–Saharan area 1 in 4 children aged between the ages of 5 –17 work, compared to 1 in 8 in Asia. Around half of the economically children are
working fulltime, and about 30 to 46 million are in very abusive and ruthless conditions or worse forms of child labor.
What is Child Labor?
Child labor refers to any employment that deprives them from their childhood. Therefore child labor is considered to be harmful because it is
economically exploitive and is interfering with their education. It is also very much hazardous towards their health, or physical, mental, spiritual, moral

Child Labour in India: Causes, Challenges and Legislations to combat the malaise.
Abstract: Child labour continues to be a problem even today in many parts of the world. These children are mostly inhabitants of poor undeveloped
nations of South America, Africa and Asia. They live in harsh conditions with almost no access to education. The income earned by them, however
minimal, is necessary to feed and clothe their families who are dependent on them. The families have no other option but to push their children to work
in various informal industrial and agricultural sectors in order to make ends meet. They are simply not aware of the harm this does to their young
children nor is there an orientation to send these children to school instead. The Government of India has taken a lot of legal initiatives in order to
address this serious issue of child labour. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has been proactively involved in the eradication of this
malaise plaguing Indian society. India is also a participant in the United Nation's International Program on Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) under
the aegis of ILO. The present paper will look at the various causes which lead to child labour, the international and national legislations that are in place
to eliminate this glaring menace and the steps which must be taken in order to abolish child labour in the country.

Child labour is the practice of having children engage in economic activity, on part or full–time basis. The practice deprives children of their childhood,
and is harmful to their physical and mental development. Poverty, lack of good schools and growth of informal economy are considered as the
important causes of child labour in India.
The 2001 national census of India estimated the total number of child labour, aged 5–14, to be at 12.6 million. In 2001, out of a 12.6 million, about 12
million children in India were in a hazardous job. UNICEF estimates that India with its larger population has the highest number of labourers in the
world less than 14 years of age, while sub–Saharan African countries have the highest percentage of children who are deployed as child labour.
International Labour Organisation estimates that agriculture at 60 percent is the largest employer of child labour in India, while United Nation's Food
and Agriculture Organisation estimates 70% of child labour is deployed in agriculture and related activities. Outside of agriculture, child labour is
observed in almost all informal sectors of the Indian economy.
Companies including Gap, Primark, Monsanto and others have been criticised for child labour in their products. The companies claim they have strict

background of the issue. The first legal link made between trade and labor standards in the United States manifested itself in the form of legislation
designed to reduce the threat of foreign goods being dumped into U.S. markets. The first laws were implemented to this end in 1890, when the
McKinley Tariff Act banned the import of goods made with prison labor (International Labor Rights Fund). However, concern for labor rights was

Many different variables play a part in finding a solution to help end child labor. Unfortunately, this form of labor plays a large role in Mexico's
economy. Although the country has anti–child labor laws, the children of Mexico are forced to work for a variety of reasons. Most families force the
children to work due to their struggle with poverty and lack of income. Although some organizations (like the North American Free Trade Agreement)
look at solutions to help boost Mexico's economy, large international corporations enter the country's struggling economy capitalizing on it's low cost
