Analysis Of Meditation 17 By John Donne
Meditation 17 is a poem by John Donne that reveals his thoughts and beliefs on the world altogether.
We see a lot of religion cited in this poem and then we also see a kind of dark side of that which would
be death. In this poem, John Donne elevates this poem by the way he structures it as well as the
language and situation. The language is so important to understand because it can convey a message
that is deeper than just the words. We see a lot of words that very common in this poem however, they
are placed in a unique way that most likely someone will have to go back and reread to grasp what is
being said. There are many metaphors, analogies and personification used throughout the poem. I
believe John Donne does this so that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I see John Donne doing the same thing in this poem, the tone is somewhat straight forward and
serious, with the narrator having a down speaking tone and somewhat apathetic to the things being
conveyed in this poem. And when she buries a man, that action concerns me this is an indicator of the
tone being used once again. It is clear that the line is speaking about death, it is pretty common that
death is taking seriously and in which we would be serious when speaking on it. John Donne also uses
alliterations throughout this poem along with repetition. congregation to come , the church is catholic ,
are examples of alliteration he used. the action concerns me , for whom this bell tolls are used as
repetition. All of these examples are used to help remind the reader what exactly they are reading and
gathering from the poem. I think that these all lighten the mood of the poem so it s not total darkness.
The structure stands out to me mainly in the fact that there are no stanzas nor paragraph indentions.
The poem is a single paragraph, I believe he kept it this way because he states that all mankind is of
one author and is one volume . Also, this single paragraph poem could be seen as an essay. When I
think of an essay, they have

Good Guys And Bad Guys Essay

Good Guys and Bad Guys Jimmy Conway and Sam Ace Rothstein, two of the most charismatic
characters in their respective films, are a lot more alike than they seem. Without actually analyzing
and going in depth with both characters, you could see why they both come off more different than
alike. First off, and a huge noticeable difference, is Jimmy s love life compared to Sam s love life.
Jimmy has no attachments to the ladies. Although the real James Conway was married, the character
portrayed by Robert De Niro was not. Portraying no love life in the film Goodfellas really made
Conway stand out from all the other supporting characters. Sam, on the other hand, had Ginger.
Ginger used up Sam like he was a human ATM machine and took advantage of every bit of generosity
Sam had in him. During the last act of the movie when Sam is throwing Ginger s clothes around and
telling her to get out you can tell that he was just acting out of emotion due to the betrayal he had
experienced. This scene was the perfect example of a falling out between ... Show more content on

Jimmy, on one hand, is the antagonist viewed as the real bad guy , whereas Sam is the antagonist
viewed as the good guy . Now, obviously they are both involved with the mob which automatically
gives them the antagonist status. However, Sam is a very giving person and caring person as you can
see by how he treats his wife and daughter. With all of the disrespect he receives from his wife he still
takes it and moves on about his business. Although this gives Sam a nice guy stance it also makes him
look like a doormat, something Jimmy is most certainly not. With all of the people that Jimmy had
whacked, most, if not all the people that helped him with his scores, you can tell what kind of person
Jimmy is. Plain and simple, Jimmy Conway is a selfish, user and abuser, far from Sam s

Starbucks s Marketing Plan For Starbucks
Introduction and Overview
Founded in 1971 at Pike s Place Market in Seattle, Washington, Starbucks coffee went from a high
quality, do it yourself whole bean retailer to an international 6.4 billion dollar empire. As of 2005,
there were 10,500 stores worldwide where customers could enjoy a cup of the internationally
recognized coffee at a convenient location. Starbucks achieved this through a series of strategic
movements all while offering a great in store experience and quality coffee.
After CEO Howard Schultz took over the company in 1982, he implemented an idea he derived from
Italian CafƩs: Serving freshly brewed, high quality coffee in store. This idea allowed customers to stay
and enjoy the coffeehouse experience, which was a new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Starbucks valued simplicity and quality over technical mediocrity; in other words, Howard Schultz
wanted to position Starbucks as a traditional coffee company, aligning with the coffee industries of
Italy, Sumatra, and Ethiopia which are known for producing high quality coffee. He also recognized
that convenient store locations were very important to the customers, in conjunction with great
service. In addition, Schultz put emphasis on innovation; innovation did not necessarily mean
technology as far as the coffee making process is concerned, but Starbucks did innovate in packaging
to protect the flavor and freshness of the coffee beans.
Moreover, Schultz organized an experienced corporate team composed of leaders from several
successful companies, such as Nike, Deloitte, and Macy s, to help manage the company and make sure
Starbucks continuously aligned with its proposed values. Yet, Schultz did not just strive for an
excellent corporate management team; he also wanted his front line workers to be the best. Therefore,
he invested more money in training his employees than marketing the brand.
The core Starbucks values described above take a more concise form in the company s mission
statement (See: Pg. 326, Exhibit 2). Put simply, those values are: 1) Respect for employees 2) cultural
diversity 3) product quality (including where it purchased beans and their preparation method) 4)
creation of loyal customers

Kite Runner Character Analysis
What makes someone your friend? In the bildungsroman novel Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini
tragically displays the betrayal of a so called friend. When they were young, Amir and Hassan did
everything together and they were inseparable. Amir s obsession with gaining Baba s love not only
made him lose someone that adored him, but also someone that would always stay by his side. Later
on, Amir redeems himself of his horrible past by taking in Hassan s son, so he can have a clean future.
Hosseini depicts good versus evil to question readers if Amir is forgiven for his one good deed
compared to his many bad deeds. Was Amir really Hassan s friend considering how disrespectful he is
to Hassan? In the novel Kite Runner, Hosseini shows that Amir did ... Show more content on

To add to Hassan s admiration for Amir, Hassan would take the blame despite the fact that it is Amir s
fault. But he never told on me. Never told that the mirror, like shooting walnuts at the neighbor s dog,
was always my idea (4). It is bizarre that Amir did not confess when Hassan was getting punished, like
if someone has a friend, he/she would not want that friend getting hurt. Then he acts like nothing
happened and does not even thank Hassan for covering for him, but instead he acts like it was Hassan
s fault and that Hassan deserves the punishment. Amir is most likely jealous that Hassan receives Baba
s attention while he needs to work for it, which is why he lets Hassan take the blame for him. The
group felt that Baba shows more kindness to Hassan as a way of overcoming his guilt for the affair,
which in turn makes Amir feel unwanted: his literary talents are not appreciated because his father
would prefer a son interested in football (Dennys). It is assumed that Amir does not like Hassan
because he can gain Baba s attention easily while Amir has tried for years to get a little bit of attention.
Amir thinks that if Hassan gets in more trouble then Baba would like Hassan less and start liking him
more and pay more attention to him. Amir treats Hassan kindly when they are alone, but in public he
degrades Hassan and acts like Hassan is nothing to him. But he s not my friend! I almost blurted. He s

CD ROM Essay
Evaluation My promotional CD ROM compares almost perfectly to my original plans. I feel like this
was a strength of my CD ROM as it allowed me to know exactly what had to go onto each screen and
in turn allowed me to manage my time well. For example, in my storyboard, my home page was
supposed to have a Welcome to Wellington gif title, my 8 buttons, 3 pictures and a brief introductory
paragraph. In my storyboard I also stated the exact layout, font size and font style. In comparison, my
actual CD ROM s home page followed this layout exactly. My history page was supposed to have a

Similarly, in my actual Interactive CD ROM on Flash I used the exact same layout. Is the product fit
for purpose? There are many reasons proving that my product is fit for purpose. Some of these
include: I included a bibliography in order to adhere to the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act. The
reasoning for making a Bibliography is to give credit to all of the author s work that I used throughout
my CD ROM. Failure to include all sources of information in my bibliography can result in a failing
of the unit due to Plagiarism. I also followed the Performing Rights Society legislation by paying
Ā£102.13 for the release of my promotional CD ROM. Another way in which my promotional CD
ROM is fit for purpose is due to the fact that I got a film classification for my video from the British
Board of Film Classification. I think this is a strength of my product as it makes the product legal and
allows me to release it to the public. Are you happy with the technical skills you gained? Overall, I am
extremely happy with the skills I required during the making of my interactive CD ROM. Some of the
skills that I feel I have developed are: my planning skills, my coding skills, my ability to make a
product from scratch, team working skills, filming skills and I think that I gained extremely overall
due to this part of the course. I have also developed my Photoshop and Flash skills. Do you feel a

childlike state of mind, while everyone else has grown up. I felt that Krebs lost his immature years,
late teens to early 20 s, because he went from college to the military. I still see him as disconnected

Monsanto Glyphosate Resistant Soybean (40-3-2
Monsanto producer created a glyphosate resistant soybean crop called GTS 40 3 2, commonly known
as Roundup Ready soybeans. The crop is produced by inserting a CP4 5 enolpyruvylshikimate 3
phosphate ( CP4 EPSPS) gene from Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a common soil bacteria. CP4 EPSPS
facilitates the soybeans survivability by allowing the crop to become resistant to extreme
temperatures, ensuring higher survival rates and successful harvests. Initially, Monsanto used
electroporation to achieve maximum cell viability and transient gene expression, however, the high
voltage required for the electroporation technique (400 V) caused instability in cell wall synthesis and
cell division. Monsanto were then able to inject the CP4 EPSPS gene into the cell wall of soybeans by
using particle bombardment to penetrate through the cell wall with minimal damage and produced
stable progeny that expressed resistance to glyphosate. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This particular promoter is vital for the survival and success of the soybean, which is why it
considered to be a dependable promoter not only for soybeans, but for other genetically modified
crops such as maize and beans. Monsanto used Ī² glucuronidase (GUS) as a selectable marker, to be
the vehicle to transport the promoter and insert the CP4 EPSPS through transcriptional replacement
(Jefferson, 1987). The GUS gene served as evidence of transformation; the GUS enzyme converts 5
bromo 4 chloro 3 indolyl Ī² D glucuronide into a blue precipitate (Agricultural Group of Monsanto
Company, 1993). Soybeans that were not transgenic would not produce this blue color when exposed
to the aforementioned substrate, indicating that transformation did not take

Examples Of Microaggression In The Movie Crash
Abstract
This paper explores the 2004 Lions Gate film Crash and the microaggressions that occur to and
between the characters in the movie. The film follows the interweaving lives of several characters
living in Los Angeles as they deal with racism, discrimination, relationships, and loss. Throughout the
film, the characters also begin to come to terms with their own biases and prejudices. The author of
this paper includes the three major types of microaggressions displayed in the film: microassault,
microinsult, and microinvalidation, describes how they occurred, and the effect these
microaggressions had on the victims. Possible counseling implications for each microaggression for
both the perpetrator and the victim are discussed. Throughout this paper, the author s personal feelings
and thoughts related to the microaggressions, and possible implications (oppression and
discrimination) of the microaggressions both intentional and unintentional are explored.
Keywords: Crash, microaggression, microassault, microinsult, microinvalidation, counseling
implications, discrimination.
The Movie Crash Assignment In 2004, Lionsgate Films released the movie Crash to critical acclaim.
The film takes place in modern day Los Angeles and shines a light on the racial and social tensions
between groups of inter related characters (Haggis, 2004). The characters include a district attorney
(Brendan Fraser) and his prejudiced wife (Sandra Bullock), a Middle Eastern store owner (Shaun
Toub), and two inner city friends who make money by stealing and selling cars (Chris Ludacris
Bridges and Larenz Tate). Throughout the film, the various prejudices and microaggressions of these
characters are revealed as they interact and find their lives becoming intertwined. According to Sue
and Sue (2016) microaggressions are brief and commonplace daily verbal or behavioral indignities
that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults that potentially have
harmful or unpleasant psychological impact on the target person or group. Microaggressions tend to
be subtle, unintentional, and indirect, often occur in situations where there are alternative
explanations, and represent unconscious and conscious

The Pain Scale By Eula Biss
What is the point in measuring something that is unique to every individual? In The Pain Scale, the
author, Eula Biss, attempts to convey her pain to the reader. She tells the reader how she has tried to
describe and measure her pain. There is a system set up for doing so, but it leaves much up to
individual interpretation. The arbitrary process by which we are supposed to evaluate the level of pain
we are experiencing doesn t seem to accomplish much. Throughout the essay, Biss uses unique ways
of comparing the suggested levels of pain to other scales. This raises the question, why can the scale,
itself, doesn t do adequate job of helping people understand pain. The Beaufort scale was developed
by in 1805 by Sir Francis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the century spanning Defoe and Beaufort s scales, many others adapted and added measures that
helped establish Beaufort s definitive measure of winds. Temperature scales are also used in an
attempt to make the concept of measuring pain more relatable. Across the world, temperature is
measured in degrees Celsius. At zero, water freezes and, at one hundred, water boils. Despite Celsius
being the global standard, the Fahrenheit scale was developed decades earlier. Daniel Gabriel
Fahrenheit based his temperature scale on two marks: on the lower end, the point where a mixture of
salt and water would cease to exist as a liquid, and, on the upper end, a measure of normal body
temperature. In an effort to add more confusion to the two standards, Lord Kelvin introduced the idea
of an absolute zero. Absolute zero is the point where molecules and atoms are supposed to be
essentially motionless. Despite this, research has showed that the motion doesn t really stop. As Biss
says, ...absolute is not absolute. She finds that comforting, but not quite enough. Throughout Biss
essay, she also attempts to equate the pain scale to something that seems much more insidious. To
many, the thought of Dante Alighieri s Divine Comedy brings about a reminder of the pain many
suffered having to analyze the text in high school. Biss sees an

Describe The Differences Between Paul And Robinson s Life
The mill factories of the early 19th century are quite different from what we know and perceive to be
factory work today. One might be surprised initially that a girl would want to go to the mills given the
current perception of them, but in this time the mills were quite attractive initially for many women.
Mary Paul initially tried to find work as a domestic for a farming family but after that failed, she
moved to the mills in Lowell looking for work (Dublin 121). Most women in the early 19th century
didn t have opportunities to earn and income. Lowell was such a unique place at this time as it
provided women work for money and a chance to move of their own accord to somewhere new. At

Robinson worked when the mills were just opening and not many were around. The Erie Canal was
built in 1925, which greeting increased the speed of transportation from the Great Lakes to New York,
causing an influx of of people (Foner 329). Many new factories sprung up around it as there was easy
water access to the ports. Faster transportation from canals and railroads caused an increase in the area
factories could supply people with manufactured goods. Newly settled western areas became states
and opened up a market for more people needing goods (Foner 332 3).This created a second hub for
factories away from Boston that was competing to sell their goods. The area of where they sold their
products began to overlap, creating a need to produce faster and cheaper. The Embargo of 1807 that
helped spur the factories initially continued to contribute to the growth of new factories into the 1950 s
(Foner 340). Even within Lowell other factories began to pop up to account for increased demand in
manufactured goods, as mentioned by Mary Paul. The companies began to cut wages to compete
which was coupled with another change in the

Effects Of Social Class On Unethical Behavior
Effect of Social Class on Unethical Behavior
Both social class and ethical behavior are important notions in our society today and have been for
many years. Unethical behavior can be defined as behavior or actions that hurts others and are illegal
or ethically questionable (Piff et al., 2012). CNN recently reported Volkswagen is being charged with
deception regarding emissions of supposedly clean vehicles. They reported that for over ten years
more than eleven million vehicles have been deliberately programmed to fabricate emissions of
damaging pollutants under certified testing conditions (Tellado, 2015). Why are consumers so
concerned and outraged at this fraud? This upsets consumers and others because they care about and
find ethics and morality to be important. Morals and values are important in our society because they
help direct people s lives and motivate people to take part in meaningful relationships. The research
completed for his article examines not just ethical behavior but also the role social class playing in
determining ethical behavior. The relationship between these to notions will examined by observing
behavior at a crosswalk. Social class is defined as a circumstance established by both the material
substance of social life and the individual s understanding of his or her social rank, and is a
fundamental feature of how he or she interacts in the social world (Kraus et al., 2012). Clothing type
was used to operationalize social class in this research,

Dred Scott V. Sandford Civil Rights Case
Civil Rights For countless amounts of years, Americans have fought a battle against discrimination.
Discrimination goes all the way back to the time of slavery. There are several important civil rights
cases and laws that have changed the United States forever. Civil rights can be defined as, [t]he
freedom to participate in the full life of the community to vote, use public facilities, and exercise equal
opportunity (Morone and Kersh 115). Also, unlike civil liberties, which limits government action,
[c]ivil rights require government action to help secure individual rights... (Morone and Kersh 115).
The question is, what changed the people of the United States minds about political equality and how
did government action protect or hurt ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To begin with, just because a law is a law, that does not immediately make it right. There are many
cases throughout history that this is evident. One example of this is prevalent in the case of Dred Scott
v. Sandford. Before this case, in 1820, the government made an agreement called the Missouri
Compromise, which drew a line through the Louisiana Territory... All new states and territories north
of the line except Missouri would be free; everything south of the line would be open to slavery
(Morone and Kersh 153). Well, when Dred Scott, a slave, sued for freedom his argument was ... he
had been taken to live in a free territory before returning to Missouri and that, as a result, he should be
free (Morone and Kersh 153). Although in my opinion his argument was valid, it was ruled that he
could not be set free due to the fact that neither the territories nor the federal government could
confine slavery. In this civil rights case, slavery was just reinforced and the government failed to
protect individuals. Soon after this case, President Abraham Lincoln is elected into office and he
completely changes the definition of freedom in America. Southern states were furious and started to
withdrawal from the States and the Civil War explodes. When the northern

The Importance Of Outsourcing Jobs In America
The Downside of Outsourcing Jobs in America
The number one goal for any company is to be profitable. They must first create a product that is in
demand. After this product is created, other concerns will start to arise such as manufacturing,
distribution, overhead, competition and marketing just to name a few. All of these things lead down to
one thing, money. In order to save money, businesses will look into many options. One of these is to
outsource jobs to foreign countries. Outsourcing jobs can save businesses tremendous amounts of
money but can ultimately hurt the economy here in America.

America consumes more than it produces. With the deficit unable to be scaled down and the current
economic activities continue, this will drive more businesses to outsource more jobs in a vicious
circle. Without consumers in America to purchase products, companies will start to look elsewhere in
order to remain in business. This could lead to companies selling more products overseas in order to
continue to remain profitable and placing more strain on the U.S. economy. A struggling economy will
impact real estate since businesses and home owners cannot afford mortgages.
Outsourcing jobs will directly affect local vacancies in office space and industrial settings. Without
new buildings for new businesses, new construction will decline and possibly for workers in these
fields to search for jobs overseas and again add to the already growing strain on the U.S. economy.

consumers to their locations. These blue collar jobs will begin to decline or even disappear

to carry a weapon or looking good in a uniform it s about everyone doing their job to their best trained

First of all, basic requirements must be met such as, age, certain level of education, aptitude, physical
and character requirements. One must be the age of 18 to enlist alone but 17 year olds must have their
parents consent. A high school diploma must have been earned as well as being a United States
Citizen. Certain qualities such as mental preparedness, physical fitness, and readiness are all qualities
a member must have to be successful. These qualities will help keep the member mentally stable and
be able to handle stressful situations as well as be ready to report for any military assignment. The last
but most definitely not least requirement is passing of the ASVAB test. The Armed Services
Vocational Aptitude Battery is an academic, timed test meant to gauge the ability to learn a new
profession usually made available to all high school juniors. The score received on the ASVAB is the
percentage of the people that the test taker has done better on the test than. For example, scoring a 61
would mean the test taker was more successful on the test than 61% of the people that have already
taken the ASVAB. It s all a huge competition to see who qualifies for the harder jobs. In order to pass
the test a 32 is required and a perfect score would be a 99. Unfortunately, the ASVAB is just one loop
that must be jumped through. (AFBMT) If the ASVAB was not taken in high school then it will be
taken at MEPS. The

Steroid Violence Article Summary
Dunn, M. (2015). Commentary on lundholm et al. (2015): What came first, the steroids or the
violence? Addiction, 110(1), 109 110. doi:10.1111/add.12752 The purpose of this article is to educate
readers about the myth of roid rage . Roid rage is when a person who uses anabolic androgens and
commits violent acts or behavior impulsively. To address the myth, the researchers conducted a study
in Copland amongst steroid users and found that 44 % of them reported increase aggression. From the
research, researchers concluded that not all steroid users experience increase aggression. Therefore
there are other factors that contribute to increased aggression in steroid users such as their job,
previous behavior and ultimately their lifestyle. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

amygdala enlargement and reduced right amygdala with brain areas involved in cognitive control and
spatial memory, which could contribute to the psychiatric effects and cognitive dysfunction associated
with steroid use. The strength of the article is that it breaks down the science of steroids and the
impact on the users also making the article unique. Examining the psychiatric effects through

Charter Schools Vs Magnet Schools
Introduction
Charter schools and magnet schools are becoming more and more common in the education of high
school students. This topic is important because of the question why are parents wanting to take their
children out of traditional public schools? This essay will educate the reader on the history of charter
and magnet public schools and the migration of high school students to these particular schools. Each
year, more and more students leave traditional public schools for alternative forms of schooling. Two
of the options parents decide to use instead of public schools are charter schools and magnet schools.
Both of these types of schools are still considered public schools in the fact that they are not able to
charge tuition and are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These schools attract students who possess gifted abilities in areas such as academics and fine arts.
Most of the time magnet schools require high test scores or another form of testing to obtain
admission. (Nicholas and Sinclair, 2015). Parents are attracted to these schools because one may
attend a magnet school through school choice outside of his or her respective school zone. With
magnet schools typically located in urban areas, the student population most of the time is very
culturally and racially diverse. Student diversity is generally an incentive to attend a school. The
presumption of magnet schools is that they will attract a cross section of students across all racial,
socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds (Parrillo, 2015). As stated earlier, magnet schools were
created for this very reason. Students who attend magnet schools usually have an exceptional ability in
one subject matter. Different magnet schools specialize is different areas of education Magnet schools
usually have programmatic differences or unique themes opposed to neighborhood schools revolving
around the creative and performing arts, open structured classes, and career options (Parrillo, 2015).
Magnet schools are also attractive to parents whose children attend inner city schools because inner
city schools usually have low graduation rates and low average yearly progress.

The Importance Of Assimilation In America
Assimilation is the manner in which people of a cultural group start to lose their individuality that
makes them different from the more dominant culture, as they seek to fit in. America has been a
melting pot of different cultures for centuries, whether it was by choice, forced or for a better life.
History has proven that assimilation in America was not acceptable but that has changed over time.
During slavery, whites did not accept assimilation and did everything possible to keep it from
occurring. The white race was the superior race and everyone else was inferior. African Americans
were enslaved and made to work for the white man. Slaves were bought and sold like animals and
were thought of as property and not humans. White Americans made sure that slaves had no part in
becoming apart of the dominant race. There were laws in place that forbade interracial marriages. If a
child was born due to interracial mixing, that child was considered inferior. After the abolishment of
slavery and during the 20th Century, some things started to change slowly although Jim Crow laws
still separated whites and blacks. Nowadays, due to specific laws like the Title IV of the Civil Rights
Act which does not allow discrimination due to race, age or sex has made America slowly accept
diversity and other cultures. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commision which investigate and
prosecute cases due to discrimination against minorities has made the corporation revise their
guidelines so

My Road Trip
I have been on many road trips in my life. For as long as I can remember, summer vacation was piling
in the car and driving across the country, setting up camp wherever we went. I would watch my mom
in the weeks and months before it, carefully planning every step of the way, even though it would
often come unravelling halfway through. The best part of vacations are the improvised parts, whether
it s taking a day trip to Disney World, the tickets bought the day before, driving down to San
Francisco for no good reason, or watching a movie in a tiny movie theater on a day that it rained.
Planning is crucial, I learned, but you should never expect anything to be set in stone. My theoretical
road trip would be taken with my two sisters and last ten days, and would be a mad dash west towards
California, which has many wonderful National Parks for us to camp in. The National Park system is a
wonderfully western phenomenon, and throughout the states west of the Appalachians, there is an
amazing diversity of places to camp and hike in. There will hopefully be no hotels on this trip, only
tents. We will have two hundred dollars put aside for grocery shopping, which we will use to buy food
that we will cook with. There will also be another three hundred set aside for eating out. There will
also be four hundred dollars for emergencies, whether that be a car breakdown or staying in a hotel.
For our ten day trip, we will have to pay for a campsite each night. The practical and wonderful thing
about camping is that the average campsite costs only ten dollars, so that will only cost us about one
hundred dollars. Hiking, our main activity on the trip, will cost us nothing as well. My family also
owns a pass that gets us into National Parks for free, so that will cost us nothing. The car we will take
is an Hyundai Elantra, which has been highly reliable in the past, and the average cost of gas per mile
is twelve cents. Lucy and I will switch driving, while Sadie will be in charge of navigation, using
atlases and Google Maps. The first day of the trip, we will leave Kansas early in the morning and
drive all the way to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. In the usual traffic, this trip will take
approximately ten hours

Black rock, Nick Enright Essay
Today I ll be talking about the play Blackrock that I ve been studying in class this term, the purpose of
this speech is to make us think how Australian drama challenges us to think about Australian culture
and identity, and the impacts it can have on us as person and as a community.
Guys stick up for their mates no matter what
Blackrock is a play written by Nick Enright that provides insight into Australian culture. Through the
violent rape of a teenage girl, the audience is challenged to consider the values and attitudes still
prevalent in Australia today. Enright uses authentic and raw Australian characters to reveal inherent
patriarchal attitudes towards women and the problems with a society that promotes sexual double ...

The boy s in Blackrock often partake in risk taking behaviour in order to gain respect within their
group and this can lead to a detrimental gang mentality. In the third scene Jared reveals to his friend
Rachel why he is so loyal to his good friend Ricko. He s been my mate since forever... he says, with
the use of emotive dialogue and colloquial language. The authenticity conveyed through the emotive
and colloquial language shows the seemingly positive impact that Ricko has had on Jared. After his
Dad split he didn t have a male role model and was what he called a total fuck up or someone to guide
him in the hyper masculine world. He found security in Ricko and in return Jared defends Ricko at all
costs, this shows the encouraging aspects of mateship, where boys can find sense of belonging in their
friendships. However, Jared s idealisation of Ricko blinds him to the realities of his aggressive
personality.
The impact of mateship and how easy it is for somebody to be pressured into doing something just to
fit in is highlighted in scene six. Ricko forces a boy named Toby who has only recently been fixated
into the group into performing the ring of fire as the other Blackrock boys cheer him on. You re the
barbeque, mate. It is shown as a type of initiation for the Blackrock boys; Toby

6. What is the normal pH of blood? Why was Allen s blood pH below normal? Pg. 970 971.
The normal blood pH is between 7.35 and 7.45. Allen s blood was acidotic due to a decrease in lung
expansion and an alteration in the perfusion to his spinal cord. He also has an alteration in spinal
innervation to the respiratory muscles including the phrenic nerve that controls the diaphragm. This
would further cause Allen to not be able to adequately take in enough oxygen and blow off enough

Were these subjects compensated to participate? It does not touch on real hard core aggression or

saliva test is a very accurate test for testosterone levels. The other way to check levels is to draw blood
and that can be expensive and time consuming.
If given adequate funds to perform research in this area, I would like to expand upon this research. I
would use more of the population, older and younger men. I would pull from prisoners and those
known to have aggression, anger issues and those known not to have issues. I would expand the
independent variables to include using violent and non violent video games, watching violent and non
violent movie clips, handling machine guns, unloaded of course, a baseball bat or maybe a machete.
Some un inhibiting items such as a stuffed animal, a Bible, or interacting with a child with a game.
The saliva tests before and after the interactions are adequate and reliable. I would have the subjects
also undergo a baseline blood pressure and heart rate check before and repeat that after the interaction.
Also, answer a few questions before and after and perform a physical aggression test to determine
their aggression levels.

Pros And Cons Of The Death Penalty
The Death Penalty The death penalty has become an extremely pressing issue in our culture today.
Both sides of the argument make very valid points. On one side the death penalty could potentially
make citizens feel more safe, and on the other hand people can argue that us as mere humans do not
have the authority to play God. I believe the death penalty should be abolished for a variety of
reasons; our government is a broken system, a proposed law would not end all murders, and we, as
humans, should not have the authority to determine whether someone lives or dies. In the article

He loves and cherishes His people, and because we bear His image He is a God of justice. When Jesus
died on the cross He fulfilled the old law, or the Old Testament; when his blood was shed it pardons us
from a spiritual death penalty. When reading the New Testament it is full of new framework; rather
than constant justice, there is grace and mercy. The New Testament calls out hypocrisy. For example,
in John 8:2 11 Jesus shows His followers and disciples that we no longer need to condemn others for a
sin that they are in, because we have not removed the plank in our own eye.
At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat

The Epic Epics Of Antiquity
From the Homeric epics of antiquity to Shakespeare s plays in the seventeenth century stories have
long been used as a way to express commentary on and examine societal issues. Today s social
commentary becomes even more dynamic as we now also use visual mediums such as television and
movies as ways to convey these stories and they often work in conjunction with literature via
adaptations. Perhaps the greatest illustration of this cross market, storytelling are comic book
adaptations as seen with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which spans across not only movies, but has
expanded to also include multiple television shows. Last April, Marvel s years of story building that

The narrative device of Project Insight correlates with fears over domestic spying and in film this is
taken to the next level as it s revealed to be part of a larger plot of the movie s villain Alexander Pierce

movie and is one of the central themes throughout Captain America: The Winter Soldier , and I agree
with the belief that the narrative neglects the pertinent question of whether or not we should even have
and use these technologies to begin with (Rosenberg). Another point from the article that really digs in
at some of the failings of Captain America: The Winter Soldier relates back to the concept of trust in
the main characters. We are supposed to be fine with Fury s choice to shoot Pierce because we trust
him. And when Steve, Romanoff, and Fury send the Project Insight helicarriers into deadly crashes,
we are not supposed to be bothered by the massive, indiscriminate loss of life they just caused both
because they are our heroes, and because the movie tells us that everyone on board is a bad guy.

The Role Of ERNAAnd Exrna
We have begun to investigate the role of EVs and exRNA in pathogenic fungi, such as Cn. Our
identification of exRNA, including sRNA, mRNA, and lncRNA, may reveal unique RNA signatures
related to the growth and virulence mechanisms of Cn. Towards this goal, we have performed RNA

Twelve novel miRNAs and 572 novel lncRNA are exRNAs not found in the existing database and will

lncRNAs, annotation will be continuing to identify those containing miRNA precursors whose targets
are functioning in pathways unique to fungi and Cn or/and essential for Cn function. Approximately
ten lncRNAs will be selected for expression validation.
We will perform expression validation of exRNA signatures produced by JEC21, a serotype D strain
and analyze whether these exRNA signatures are also present in other serotype D strains of Cn, as
well as serotype B and C C. gattii strains using RT qPCR. We will isolate exRNAs from serotype A Cn

ie there is a change of magnetic flux through a circuit. Faraday s experiment: Connect a coil of many
turns to a zero centered galvanometer. Move a small magnet in and out of the coil and we can observe
a small current is produced when the magnet is moved but no current when there was no movement.
By varying the speed (relative motion) of the movement and strength of magnet, the galvanometer

Thrasymachus And Socrates Justice
Socrates and Thrasymachus: What is Justice? What is justice? This is the common refrain throughout
Plato s Republic. As a work of philosophy, Republic attempts to answer this question by posing
thought provoking conversations between Socrates and the characters he meets in his travels. These
characters serve as foils and counterpoints to Socrates and his own interpretation of justice. Perhaps
the most interesting counterpoint to Socrates comes in the conversation with Thrasymachus, a
skeptical Sophist who rejects a simple vision of what is just. Thrasymachus rejects a hard definition of
justice and argues that justice is fluid and a product of society, and while Socrates makes reasonable

suggest that avoiding desires and violence will resolve such familial conflict. However, it is difficult to

As a couple, Medb and Ailill have an interesting dynamic, where they quarrel over their prowess and
wealth in comparison to one another, putting their honor and power at stake, but they still fight on the
same side during the war. Even though they are able to work together during the war, there is still
inevitable tension in their relationship since they struggle to balance their diplomatic roles with

Frankenstein, By Mary Shelley And Parable Of The Sower By...
And the Destiny of Earthseed is to take root among the stars. (Butler 77) The books Frankenstein by
Mary Shelley and Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler are both science fiction novels warning
of a dangerous potential future. Frankenstein looks at the dangers of creating artificially intelligent
beings, while Parable of the Sower explores human savagery in the collapse of American civilization
as the result of poor political decisions. Each addresses concerns of the time they were published.
While both are pessimistic views of the future and both require the suspension of disbelief, the
concept of dystopia and utopia is definitely apparent in both novels. A dystopia being a world in which
nothing is perfect and a utopia being a perfect world. Frankenstein addresses a timeless issue that
modern science may soon make a reality, while Parable of the Sower creates an alarming depiction of
conservative leadership.
Frankenstein is an early depiction of the creation of artificial intelligence, an idea with great
significance today. While artificially intelligent beings such as golems exist in myth as the product of
magic, scientific progress has the true potential to make such beings. In modern times, the subject is
frequently discussed with regard to computers being programmed to think, in an imitation of the
human brain. In Frankenstein, the medium used is recycled human body parts stitched together to
create a new human like entity. Whether or not this entity,

Essay on Robert Jensens Patriotism
Many people believe that they are patriotic people. But, what truly makes one patriotic? In Saying
Goodbye to Patriotism Robert Jensen critiques the effects of patriotism on today s modern society, the
United States, and globalization after the attacks on 9/11. Jensen defines patriotism in his talk
delivered to the Peace Action National Congress as love and loyal or zealous support of one s own
country. (Jensen 741) But, that is not the only definition of patriotism. One may love living in the
United States so does that make them patriotic? Patriotism is probably one of the hardest words to
define in today s society.
Jensen presents two alternative definitions of patriotism in his speech. The first one suggests that
patriotism is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the leaders of the country just keep creating policies and the majority of the citizens just accept
them as they are, then this country really isn t that big of a democracy as one may think it is.
In Jensen s talk, he also gives a quote of Emma Goldman s that states, Patriotism assumes that our
globe is divided into little spots, each one surrounded by an iron gate. Those who had the fortune of
being born on some particular spot, consider themselves better, nobler, grander, and more intelligent
than the living beings inhabiting any other spot. It is, therefore, the duty of everyone living on that
chosen spot to fight, kill, and die in the attempt to impose his superiority upon all others. This sounds
a lot more like what patriotism is today. War is something that has always existed and even in this
modern day in age, it is still considered the best way to resolve conflict. Jensen feels war in
Afghanistan is barbaric because of the fact that people seem to think that their lives are more valuable
than Afghanistan citizens and if innocent Afghans have to die then so be it to achieve the goals of the
United States. But, are the goals of the United States truly patriotic? What are the real goals of the
United States as it embarks on a new war on Iraq? From an Afghani American s standpoint Tamim
Ansary compares modern day Afghanistan to Nazi Germany and he does a pretty good comparison
when he states; When you think Taliban, think Nazis. When you think bin

Amendments Of The 18th Amendment
Amendments: Prohibition and its Repeal In the United States, certain rights have been guaranteed to
American citizens. The creation of the Constitution was created to make sure American s always had
these rights. This led to a Utopian world in the eyes of congress when it was really Dystopian. The
18th Amendment known as the Prohibition era was expected to be good for America when in reality it
brought more problems than expected. After seeing the problems Prohibition caused, the 21st
Amendment was enforced and put an end to the era and the dystopian aspect of it all. The United
States constitution was created to make sure that certain rights were guaranteed to America s citizens.
The constitution was signed on September 17, 1787 by delegates to the Constitutional Convention in
Philadelphia in the presence of George Washington. The Constitution has been around for over 200
years and to this day has 27 amendments. America has significantly grown in population and the
economy has expanded much more than the delegates could have ever imagined, but through all of
America s changes, the Constitution has adapted as well. The first 10 amendments are the Bill of
Rights. Even though the Constitution was created to make sure that American s had certain rights, it
has also taken some away. For example, the 18th amendment, which was later repealed by the 21st
amendment. The ratification of the eighteenth amendment was known as the era called Prohibition.
Prohibition came about

We see a lot of religion cited in this poem and then we also see a kind of dark side of that which would be death. In this poem, John Donne elevates this poem by the way he structures it as well as the language and situation. The language is so important to understand because it can convey a message that is deeper than just the words. We see a lot of words that very common in this poem however, they are placed in a unique way that most likely someone will have to go back and reread to grasp what is being said. There are many metaphors, analogies and personification used throughout the poem. I believe John Donne does this so that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I see John Donne doing the same thing in this poem, the tone is somewhat straight forward and serious, with the narrator having a down speaking tone and somewhat apathetic to the things being conveyed in this poem. And when she buries a man, that action concerns me this is an indicator of the tone being used once again. It is clear that the line is speaking about death, it is pretty common that death is taking seriously and in which we would be serious when speaking on it. John Donne also uses alliterations throughout this poem along with repetition. congregation to come , the church is catholic , are examples of alliteration he used. the action concerns me , for whom this bell tolls are used as repetition. All of these examples are used to help remind the reader what exactly they are reading and gathering from the poem. I think that these all lighten the mood of the poem so it s not total darkness. The structure stands out to me mainly in the fact that there are no stanzas nor paragraph indentions. The poem is a single paragraph, I believe he kept it this way because he states that all mankind is of one author and is one volume . Also, this single paragraph poem could be seen as an essay. Good Guys And Bad Guys Essay Dan Breen COM117: Languages of Film TV 11/5/2014 Jason Molloy Good Guys and Bad Guys Jimmy Conway and Sam Ace Rothstein, two of the most charismatic characters in their respective films, are a lot more alike than they seem. Without actually analyzing and going in depth with both characters, you could see why they both come off more different than alike. First off, and a huge noticeable difference, is Jimmy s love life compared to Sam s love life. Jimmy has no attachments to the ladies. Although the real James Conway was married, the character portrayed by Robert De Niro was not. Portraying no love life in the film Goodfellas really made Conway stand out from all the other supporting characters. Sam, on the other hand, had Ginger. Ginger used up Sam like he was a human ATM machine and took advantage of every bit of generosity Sam had in him. During the last act of the movie when Sam is throwing Ginger s clothes around and telling her to get out you can tell that he was just acting out of emotion due to the betrayal he had experienced. This scene was the perfect example of a falling out between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jimmy, on one hand, is the antagonist viewed as the real bad guy , whereas Sam is the antagonist viewed as the good guy . Now, obviously they are both involved with the mob which automatically gives them the antagonist status. However, Sam is a very giving person and caring person as you can see by how he treats his wife and daughter. With all of the disrespect he receives from his wife he still takes it and moves on about his business. Although this gives Sam a nice guy stance it also makes him look like a doormat, something Jimmy is most certainly not. With all of the people that Jimmy had whacked, most, if not all the people that helped him with his scores, you can tell what kind of person Jimmy is. Plain and simple, Jimmy Conway is a selfish, user and abuser, far from Sam s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Starbucks s Marketing Plan For Starbucks Introduction and Overview Founded in 1971 at Pike s Place Market in Seattle, Washington, Starbucks coffee went from a high quality, do it yourself whole bean retailer to an international 6.4 billion dollar empire. As of 2005, there were 10,500 stores worldwide where customers could enjoy a cup of the internationally recognized coffee at a convenient location. Starbucks achieved this through a series of strategic movements all while offering a great in store experience and quality coffee. After CEO Howard Schultz took over the company in 1982, he implemented an idea he derived from Italian CafĆ©s: Serving freshly brewed, high quality coffee in store. This idea allowed customers to stay and enjoy the coffeehouse experience, which was a new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Starbucks valued simplicity and quality over technical mediocrity; in other words, Howard Schultz wanted to position Starbucks as a traditional coffee company, aligning with the coffee industries of Italy, Sumatra, and Ethiopia which are known for producing high quality coffee. He also recognized that convenient store locations were very important to the customers, in conjunction with great service. In addition, Schultz put emphasis on innovation; innovation did not necessarily mean technology as far as the coffee making process is concerned, but Starbucks did innovate in packaging to protect the flavor and freshness of the coffee beans. Moreover, Schultz organized an experienced corporate team composed of leaders from several successful companies, such as Nike, Deloitte, and Macy s, to help manage the company and make sure Starbucks continuously aligned with its proposed values. Yet, Schultz did not just strive for an excellent corporate management team; he also wanted his front line workers to be the best. To add to Hassan s admiration for Amir, Hassan would take the blame despite the fact that it is Amir s fault. But he never told on me. Never told that the mirror, like shooting walnuts at the neighbor s dog, was always my idea (4). It is bizarre that Amir did not confess when Hassan was getting punished, like if someone has a friend, he/she would not want that friend getting hurt. Then he acts like nothing happened and does not even thank Hassan for covering for him, but instead he acts like it was Hassan s fault and that Hassan deserves the punishment. Amir is most likely jealous that Hassan receives Baba s attention while he needs to work for it, which is why he lets Hassan take the blame for him. The group felt that Baba shows more kindness to Hassan as a way of overcoming his guilt for the affair, which in turn makes Amir feel unwanted: his literary talents are not appreciated because his father would prefer a son interested in football (Dennys). It is assumed that Amir does not like Hassan because he can gain Baba s attention easily while Amir has tried for years to get a little bit of attention. Amir thinks that if Hassan gets in more trouble then Baba would like Hassan less and start liking him more and pay more attention to him. Amir treats Hassan kindly when they are alone, but in public he degrades Hassan and acts like Hassan is nothing to him. But he s not my friend! I almost blurted. He s my servant (41)! ... The crop is produced by inserting a CP4 5 enolpyruvylshikimate 3 phosphate ( CP4 EPSPS) gene from Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a common soil bacteria. CP4 EPSPS facilitates the soybeans survivability by allowing the crop to become resistant to extreme temperatures, ensuring higher survival rates and successful harvests. Initially, Monsanto used electroporation to achieve maximum cell viability and transient gene expression, however, the high voltage required for the electroporation technique (400 V) caused instability in cell wall synthesis and cell division. • 11. Examples Of Microaggression In The Movie Crash Abstract This paper explores the 2004 Lions Gate film Crash and the microaggressions that occur to and between the characters in the movie. The film follows the interweaving lives of several characters living in Los Angeles as they deal with racism, discrimination, relationships, and loss. Throughout the film, the characters also begin to come to terms with their own biases and prejudices. The author of this paper includes the three major types of microaggressions displayed in the film: microassault, microinsult, and microinvalidation, describes how they occurred, and the effect these microaggressions had on the victims. Possible counseling implications for each microaggression for both the perpetrator and the victim are discussed. Throughout this paper, the author s personal feelings and thoughts related to the microaggressions, and possible implications (oppression and discrimination) of the microaggressions both intentional and unintentional are explored. Keywords: Crash, microaggression, microassault, microinsult, microinvalidation, counseling implications, discrimination. The Movie Crash Assignment In 2004, Lionsgate Films released the movie Crash to critical acclaim. The film takes place in modern day Los Angeles and shines a light on the racial and social tensions between groups of inter related characters (Haggis, 2004). The characters include a district attorney (Brendan Fraser) and his prejudiced wife (Sandra Bullock), a Middle Eastern store owner (Shaun Toub), and two inner city friends who make money by stealing and selling cars (Chris Ludacris Bridges and Larenz Tate). Throughout the film, the various prejudices and microaggressions of these characters are revealed as they interact and find their lives becoming intertwined. According to Sue and Sue (2016) microaggressions are brief and commonplace daily verbal or behavioral indignities that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults that potentially have harmful or unpleasant psychological impact on the target person or group. • 12. The Pain Scale By Eula Biss What is the point in measuring something that is unique to every individual? In The Pain Scale, the author, Eula Biss, attempts to convey her pain to the reader. She tells the reader how she has tried to describe and measure her pain. There is a system set up for doing so, but it leaves much up to individual interpretation. The arbitrary process by which we are supposed to evaluate the level of pain we are experiencing doesn t seem to accomplish much. Throughout the essay, Biss uses unique ways of comparing the suggested levels of pain to other scales. This raises the question, why can the scale, itself, doesn t do adequate job of helping people understand pain. The Beaufort scale was developed by in 1805 by Sir Francis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the century spanning Defoe and Beaufort s scales, many others adapted and added measures that helped establish Beaufort s definitive measure of winds. Temperature scales are also used in an attempt to make the concept of measuring pain more relatable. Across the world, temperature is measured in degrees Celsius. At zero, water freezes and, at one hundred, water boils. Despite Celsius being the global standard, the Fahrenheit scale was developed decades earlier. Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit based his temperature scale on two marks: on the lower end, the point where a mixture of salt and water would cease to exist as a liquid, and, on the upper end, a measure of normal body temperature. In an effort to add more confusion to the two standards, Lord Kelvin introduced the idea of an absolute zero. Absolute zero is the point where molecules and atoms are supposed to be essentially motionless. Despite this, research has showed that the motion doesn t really stop. As Biss says, ...absolute is not absolute. She finds that comforting, but not quite enough. Most women in the early 19th century didn t have opportunities to earn and income. • 14. Effects Of Social Class On Unethical Behavior Effect of Social Class on Unethical Behavior Both social class and ethical behavior are important notions in our society today and have been for many years. Unethical behavior can be defined as behavior or actions that hurts others and are illegal or ethically questionable (Piff et al., 2012). CNN recently reported Volkswagen is being charged with deception regarding emissions of supposedly clean vehicles. They reported that for over ten years more than eleven million vehicles have been deliberately programmed to fabricate emissions of damaging pollutants under certified testing conditions (Tellado, 2015). Why are consumers so concerned and outraged at this fraud? This upsets consumers and others because they care about and find ethics and morality to be important. Morals and values are important in our society because they help direct people s lives and motivate people to take part in meaningful relationships. America has been a melting pot of different cultures for centuries, whether it was by choice, forced or for a better life. History has proven that assimilation in America was not acceptable but that has changed over time. During slavery, whites did not accept assimilation and did everything possible to keep it from occurring. The white race was the superior race and everyone else was inferior. African Americans were enslaved and made to work for the white man. Slaves were bought and sold like animals and were thought of as property and not humans. White Americans made sure that slaves had no part in becoming apart of the dominant race. There were laws in place that forbade interracial marriages. If a child was born due to interracial mixing, that child was considered inferior. After the abolishment of slavery and during the 20th Century, some things started to change slowly although Jim Crow laws still separated whites and blacks. Nowadays, due to specific laws like the Title IV of the Civil Rights Act which does not allow discrimination due to race, age or sex has made America slowly accept diversity and other cultures. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commision which investigate and prosecute cases due to discrimination against minorities has made the corporation revise their guidelines so ... • 26. My Road Trip I have been on many road trips in my life. For as long as I can remember, summer vacation was piling in the car and driving across the country, setting up camp wherever we went. I would watch my mom in the weeks and months before it, carefully planning every step of the way, even though it would often come unravelling halfway through. The best part of vacations are the improvised parts, whether it s taking a day trip to Disney World, the tickets bought the day before, driving down to San Francisco for no good reason, or watching a movie in a tiny movie theater on a day that it rained. Planning is crucial, I learned, but you should never expect anything to be set in stone. My theoretical road trip would be taken with my two sisters and last ten days, and would be a mad dash west towards California, which has many wonderful National Parks for us to camp in. The National Park system is a wonderfully western phenomenon, and throughout the states west of the Appalachians, there is an amazing diversity of places to camp and hike in. There will hopefully be no hotels on this trip, only tents. We will have two hundred dollars put aside for grocery shopping, which we will use to buy food that we will cook with. There will also be another three hundred set aside for eating out. There will also be four hundred dollars for emergencies, whether that be a car breakdown or staying in a hotel. For our ten day trip, we will have to pay for a campsite each night. The practical and wonderful thing about camping is that the average campsite costs only ten dollars, so that will only cost us about one hundred dollars. Hiking, our main activity on the trip, will cost us nothing as well. My family also owns a pass that gets us into National Parks for free, so that will cost us nothing. The car we will take is an Hyundai Elantra, which has been highly reliable in the past, and the average cost of gas per mile is twelve cents. Lucy and I will switch driving, while Sadie will be in charge of navigation, using atlases and Google Maps. The first day of the trip, we will leave Kansas early in the morning and drive all the way to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. Black rock, Nick Enright Essay Today I ll be talking about the play Blackrock that I ve been studying in class this term, the purpose of this speech is to make us think how Australian drama challenges us to think about Australian culture and identity, and the impacts it can have on us as person and as a community. Guys stick up for their mates no matter what Blackrock is a play written by Nick Enright that provides insight into Australian culture. Through the violent rape of a teenage girl, the audience is challenged to consider the values and attitudes still prevalent in Australia today. In the third scene Jared reveals to his friend Rachel why he is so loyal to his good friend Ricko. He s been my mate since forever... he says, with the use of emotive dialogue and colloquial language. The authenticity conveyed through the emotive and colloquial language shows the seemingly positive impact that Ricko has had on Jared. After his Dad split he didn t have a male role model and was what he called a total fuck up or someone to guide him in the hyper masculine world. He found security in Ricko and in return Jared defends Ricko at all costs, this shows the encouraging aspects of mateship, where boys can find sense of belonging in their friendships. However, Jared s idealisation of Ricko blinds him to the realities of his aggressive personality. The impact of mateship and how easy it is for somebody to be pressured into doing something just to fit in is highlighted in scene six. On one side the death penalty could potentially make citizens feel more safe, and on the other hand people can argue that us as mere humans do not have the authority to play God. I believe the death penalty should be abolished for a variety of reasons; our government is a broken system, a proposed law would not end all murders, and we, as humans, should not have the authority to determine whether someone lives or dies. Another point from the article that really digs in at some of the failings of Captain America: The Winter Soldier relates back to the concept of trust in the main characters. Frankenstein looks at the dangers of creating artificially intelligent beings, while Parable of the Sower explores human savagery in the collapse of American civilization as the result of poor political decisions. Each addresses concerns of the time they were published. While both are pessimistic views of the future and both require the suspension of disbelief, the concept of dystopia and utopia is definitely apparent in both novels.
