How to write a topic sentence
What is the topic sentence?
It is a sentence written at the beggining of a
paragraph to tell the reader what you are
going to talk about. It helps to prevent any
miscommunication on your part.
Qualities of a good topic sentence
•Brevity: Do not write too many details, that is what the body of the
paragraph is for. If not it could be confusing.
•Clarity: Try not to engage in wordplay and don´t speak in vague
terms.
•Precision: Don´t be too broad when introducing the topic. It is not
helpful to readers.
Things to avoid that make for a
bad topic sentence
•Don´t use facts as topic sentence.
•Don´t just talk about the “What”, talk about the “Why” as
well.
•Don´t say “I am going to tell you…” or “I am going to
speak about…” when introducing a topic.
Good Vs bad topic sentences:
Examples
•Bad topic sentence: “Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809”.
It doesn´t tell the reader what you are going to talk about.
•Good topic sentence: “Abraham Lincoln, born in 1809, was one of
the most influential politicians in history”.
The reader knows what to expect when you use this kind of
statement.
