The Little Skate, Leucoraja erinacea, is a species of skate in the family Rajidae. They re also
somewhat populous in Rhode Island s Narragansett Bay, which surrounds the island I call home. The
skate population has been increasing in numbers since 1970 and is now one of the predominant
animals in bottom fish communities. But marine education hasn t expanded along with the skate
population, and now, more often than not, they are mistaken for stingrays. I see this firsthand at the
Save the Bay Exploration Center and Aquarium where I volunteer kids and their parents alike confuse

forefront several students who until now had remained in the background. I count myself among the

In our brain we have neurons that communicate every second of the day with one other through their
dendrite and axons. Most of the time incoming signals are received in the dendrites and outgoing
signals travel down the axon to the nerve terminal. For the neuron to receive the rapid communication

In the North Carolinian piedmont, there are several different forest communities. The main types are,
loblolly/ slash pine forest, mesic forest, oak forest, and floodplain forest (NC Wildlife 2015). Soil
types, elevation, climate, and nutrient availability are important components of determining forest
types. There are also certain species, considered indicators that help predict the type of forest
community. The change in environmental factors and species distribution allow for different forest
types (Cortes, Islebe 2005). Measuring the environmental factors of a plot and identifying the different
species present can predict Forest types and is commonly done by land and forest managers (Fortunel
etc. Al 2014). This experiment tests different locations of the NC piedmont, to help determine forest
types in this area. Through looking at different areas of the piedmont, I hypothesis there will be four
different types of forests, representing the most common types in this area. In addition, I predict soil
types and nutrients are important indicators of forest types.

Engineering has been an essential part of society since man created the wheel. Even from the days in
ancient Egypt when the pharaohs built the pyramids they used their own form of engineering.
Engineers were always a very prestigious occupation. It was roman engineers who allowed the city of
Rome to be built from the palaces to the aqueducts. After the roman engineers built the aqueducts then
engineering evolved to a more renaissance approach including building castles and moats. Kings and
queens would use engineers for personal statues of themselves or for improvements on their castles.
The foundation of engineering completely changed when Isaac newton invented calculus and put a
formula to gravity. A couple hundred years later, many engineers focused on improving machinery in
the industrial revolution, along with many improvements in the medical field. Lately some of the more
popular feats of engineers include large skyscrapers being built across the world, and one of the best
inventions of all which is the computer. Computer scientist and electrical engineers have been at the
forefront of our most recent technological advancement and will continue to push our technological
boundaries to the limits.

6.0 Understanding Prostate Cancer
6.1 A general discussion about prostate cancer in NZ
This cancer is unusual in that it takes a long time (15 20 years or more) to progress from a localised
state in the prostate to metastatic disease and death. Men whose cancer is in the localised state may
have no prostate symptoms, no bleeding or pain. The tumour is too small to cause obstruction or
LUTS (In older men coexisting BPH may cause LUTS, but there may be a cancer present too).
Research on the incidence of Prostate Cancer and PSA testing in NZ Māori has shown that although
Māori have a decreased incidence compared to all men, their mortality rate is higher, and there is a
reduced rate of PSA testing. Pacific men have the same incidence and mortality as all men.
A positive Family History of prostate cancer is significant, having a first degree relative (brother or
father) increases the risk by 2 2.5 times, if 2 or more the risk is increased by 5 11 times. There is a
genetic (hereditary disease) sub group that accounts for near 10% of cases, this is likely if three or
more relatives.
Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men. Nearly two thirds are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older,
and it is rare before age 40. The average age at the time of diagnosis is about 67. Prostate cancer is the
second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung cancer. In New Zealand
Prostate Cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in New Zealand men, behind Lung Cancer
