American Colonies Dbq
During the 1600s and 1700s, the English colonists established colonies in North America. There are
many reasons and people that were responsible for this movement.
For freedom or because of politics, many of the English colonists fled the English rule. Though, there
are two other reasons, economy and religion, that heavily influenced the creation and success of the
colonies; especially the Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and other Southern colonies. Therefore,
English colonists established some colonies in North America for economic and religious reasons.
The Pennsylvania and Maryland colonies were established for religious reasons. First there was

In Virginia their economy was based on tobacco sales. It was so valuable because it couldn t be grown
in England. English tobacco imports from America in 1620 to 1775 went up in weight from 0.1 to
102.0 million pounds. Overall Virginia s profit came mainly from tobacco exports. Along with the
increase of tobacco, the number of slaves, in Virginia especially, also went up in this time period. This
was because the colonists used slaves to farm the tobacco; the more tobacco the more slaves they
needed . Virginia had resources besides tobacco, too; they were pigs and corn. The other Southern
colonies, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, had many other natural resources that made
them a perfect spot for founding a colony, as well. These resources were helpful for getting the
colonies started, as well as providing a steady profit from trading and selling. North Carolina had
Naval stores, corn, rice, pigs, and tobacco. In South Carolina, just like the North, had Naval stores,
corn, rice, and pigs; South Carolina had something else, indigo. This was also a valuable resource, as
it could only be found in certain places. Georgia had indigo too; as well as pigs and rice. Virginia had
a strong economy because of their tobacco production. The other southern colonies also had an
abundance of other valuable resources. All on the coast, exporting their goods was an easy way to

Underground Economies And Its Effects On Canada
This paper looks into the different types of underground economies and its effects on Canada, and
argues that underground economy is destructive to the society and should be eliminated as much as
possible. With evidence from Statistics Canada, it shows the percentage of how much the black market
is affecting the GDP. It also discusses the main causes as to why some sellers choose to be in the
underground economy and how they could benefit from it temporarily. Underground economies in a
long run are invisible actions that creates very visible consequences, including the vicious cycle of
low tax revenue, less quality and quantity in public goods, discourage in money circulation,
drawbacks to GDP, lowered employment rate and a society that ... Show more content on

All kinds of goods and services are available in an underground economy. The most commonly traded
goods and services are goods and services that are available in the official market, but at a lower cost
in the black market; or goods and services that has a limited supply in the official market, but are sold
at an elevated price in the Black market. Despite the trade being illegal, as long as both the seller and
buyer comes to an agreement on the price, they trade privately with cash to avoid being detected.
Although many sellers get away with this, at the end of the day underground economy is a continued
cycle of affecting the country and its citizens, including sellers and buyers in the black market, mostly
its tax revenues will be affected, then the GDP, and finally its citizens. All Black market trades are
done in the shadows, but if the root causes of the continued growth in the underground economy are
known, things could be done to eliminate the number of black market trades as much as possible.
Underground economy is disruptive to the society, to avoid these negative effects; it should be
eliminated as much as possible.
The unreported economy causes tax evasion and that affects everybody in Canada. There are various
negative effects regarding the black market; doubtful the most significant one is the effect it has on tax
revenues the unreported economy. Tax revenue is the sum of all different kinds of taxes collected

The Fate of Women in The Birthmark Essay
The Fate of Women in The Birthmark
Wilson Sullivan in Nathaniel Hawthorne in New England Men of Letters states that Nathaniel
Hawthorne s tale, The Birthmark, depicts the efforts of a deranged scientist to obtain total perfection
in his wife by removal of a facial blemish. In this story the scientist operates on the superficial level of
the physical world, while the woman, the truly heroic woman, functions on the level of the heart and
soul, the more significant level. She it is who in her virtue provides for the reader an example to live
by, even though she loses her life in the process. This essay hopes to explore the status, role, attitude
toward women and other such issues.

The wife s virtue leads her onward and upward; the husband s lack thereof and inability to appreciate
virtue in his Georgiana leads him downward and downward.
Even after Aylmer has persuaded a beautiful woman to become his wife, he is not capable of loving
her properly, unselfishly, because he had devoted himself, however, too unreservedly to scientific
studies ever to be weaned from them by any second passion. The narrator seeks to justify this error or
lack in Aylmer by explaining that it was not unusual for the love of science to rival the love of woman
in its depth and absorbing energy. Already at the outset of the tale, the reader perceives that Georgiana
is going to be shortchanged in this marriage. She is exposed to the problem initially when her husband
asks whether it never occurred to you that the mark upon your cheek might be removed? Aylmer is in
quest of physical perfection in his wife; unfortunately he discounts her inner, spiritual value so clearly
manifested in her comment: ``To tell you the truth it has been so often called a charm that I was
simple enough to imagine it might be so. In using the word simple she is being honest and not
sarcastic; she is being humble and respectful of others (parents?) evaluation of herself. The reply

Redrone Feasibility Study
Robots are re programmable machine that can be programmed to do a specific or many tasks. Robots
are mainly used to perform tasks that humans dislike or cannot perform safely. Therefore, a robot is a
robot as it is capable of movement, is reprogrammable, and can be programmed in order to complete a
task/tasks. The assignment was to develop and program a robot prototype which would assist an
audience/community. Thus, by assisting the needy communities the Redrone would be improving the
quality of life along with creating social, political, and/or economic conclusions. One specific Robot,
the Redrone, was constructed to monitor and aid bison, the nation s national mammal. The Redrone
will aid the bison by monitoring them to make sure they do not wander off to an area where they may
be killed or injured and also to warn if they are hurt. The Redrone was built with propellers to give it
the ability to fly. By flying/hovering, it can easily monitor the bison without getting caught on grasses,
trees, and bushes. There is a camera attached to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the Redrone the bison population will continue to grow and improve. Therefore, humans can
receive more goods from the bison without diminishing the population to a large extent thus,
improving the economy. Furthermore, bison have mass migrated outside of Yellowstone National Park
which has upset local and state governments. The Redrone will help control these mass migrations by
leading the bison back into National Parks consequently solving political issues and conclusions.
Ultimately, by assisting the bison the Redrone creates political and economic implications and
solutions. Providing a service, improving the life of bison, the grasslands, and humans along with
creating political and economic conclusions are tasks that the Redrone can complete. Robots are used
to complete tasks that are impossible, dull, or dangerous for humans to do such as, aiding and

What Is Better Than College Theatre
Never in a million years would I have imagined that I would be able to identify myself as an actress.
Growing up, I never really liked sports. I tried dance, gymnastics, painting, and singing; nothing was

Product Life Cycle Name GBM/381 December 5, 2011 Rolando Sanchez Product Life Cycle The
international product life cycle (PLC) theory of trade states that the location of production of certain
kinds of products shifts as they go through their life cycles, which consist of four stages introduction,
growth, maturity, and decline. There are many ins and outs when a company is putting a product into
production and distribution. You must be able to assess the the impact that it is going to gain for your

from the previous year their products will continue to have a great international impact. Trading
groups, whether bilateral or regional, are an important influence on MNEs strategies. Such groups can
define the size of the regional market and the rules under which companies must operate. Companies
in the initial stages of foreign expansion must be aware of the regional economic groups that
encompass countries with good manufacturing locations or market opportunities. For instance when
you have a company that assesses the needs of their product in a foreign market, there is cost
associated with the export of their product and with the agreements that the company has that is
protected by trade agreements the company will save monies in the long run and withstand the impact
of their product being sold in other markets, by sometimes having that price reduction of tax, shipping
cost when building that relationship, to progress the growth in their company and in both markets of
goods exported and sold. One of the factors behind the success of the brand in Jamaica, Stewart

Electroconvulsive Therapy Argumentative Essay
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), formerly known as electroshock therapy, is a treatment for mental
illnesses that runs small electric currents through the brain, with the intention of bringing on a brief
seizure. The goal is to change brain chemistry to reverse symptoms of certain mental illnesses. During
the 1940s 50s, ECT was the most effective way of treating certain mental illnesses and was used
frequently throughout many countries (Kendell, 1982). One of the main illnesses ECT is used for is
depression, but it is also used for other mental illnesses, such as mania and some cases of
schizophrenia. Patients undergo ECT about three times a week, totaling six to twelve sessions. This is
an important topic to research because ECT is known to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although ECT is shown to be effective, it does not always mean that is a safe form of treatment. If
ECT causes patients to have severe brain damage and cognitive deficits, it would be considered
unethical to use, regardless if it an effective form of treatment for certain mental illnesses (Reisner,
2003). There are limitations to ECT that doctors need to be aware of, such as patients having existing
medical conditions that could counteract with ECT treatment and cause damage to the patient.
Informed consent is an important process in undergoing ECT, it should let the patient know all of the
risks and all of the benefits of ECT. Many have suggested that although the risk of brain damage is
reported to be low, it is still an important deciding factor for a patient who is eligible for undergoing
ECT. Informed consent should include risks, benefits, acknowledge post treatment risks and
confusion, the possibility or uncertain effects of the treatment, as well as alternative options (Reisner,
2003). Because a risk of a treatment is not always certain, it should still be required to inform a patient
of the possible effects of the treatment they are undergoing, due to the minimal possibility that brain
damage or death could still

The Greasy Lake And Life After High School
In both Greasy Lake and Life After High School the protagonists are both subjected to external
conflict that forever changes their course in life. With so much emphasis on the differences between
individuals these days, it is imperative that people recognize this powerful commonality between the
spectrum of humanity. Two completely different people living completely different lives are somehow
still directly linked through the intrinsic nature of life. Even though the narrator from Greasy Lake ,
Joe as he will be called from simplicity sake and Sunny from Life After High School are separated by
gender and culture, both share the commonality of a metamorphosis as the direct result of an external
conflict. Regardless of the shape or appearance of this metamorphosis, I purpose that both Joe and
Sunny are of the same element that only differ in structure and appearance due to the differences in
both the stimuli and base parameters in their life.
In this case, Sunny and joe s base parameters or starting points differ quite a bit. Joe is a greaser
working on meeting the criteria and trying to live up to the name. He had the look and behavior down
pat, wearing torn up leather jackets, and striking elaborate poses to show people he doesn t give a
damn. Yet, he is still largely an innocent adolescent just trying to find his way in the world. Sunny on
the other hand was a cheerleader and the light that her name implies. When the quarterback Chuck

Juror s Duty In Twelve Angry Men
Twelve Men are on jury duty. The judge explains to them the case, a case where supposedly a son

apart the fact that the boy couldn t remember the movies he supposedly saw, but says in that kind of
state of trauma it could be difficult. They also discuss how the murderer used a switchblade the wrong
way, and that there was no way that the boy would use it the wrong was as he was very experienced.
Juror 8 goes on and sees if it was also actually possibly for the other witness (the woman) to actually

enough for her to see. So, all that s left on the guilty verdict is 10 and 8, and 10 changes his verdict to
not guilty after being quickly shut down about his comments. So, now that only 8 is left, they have a
somewhat difficult time convincing him, but he does change his verdict to not guilty . The story ends

The First Confiscation Act Of September 1862
With this knowledge Congress passed Major General Benjamin F. Butler quick thinking into a policy,
the First Confiscation Act, in August of 1861 which stated that the federal government had authority to
seize any property owned by the Confederates which included slaves. By March the following year, an
Article of War was produced which prohibited any military or naval services from returning run away
or fugitive slaves to their respective masters, nullifying the Fugitive Acts all together. When the
Second Confiscation Act was announced in July of 1862 it declared forever free Confederate owned
slaves who made their way to federal lines or who resided in rebellious territory that fell to federal
forces (Luke and Smith 2014, 14). Also in the bill, was the legitimisation of the president to utilise
persons of African descent in any way that he considered necessary and proper for the suppression of
the rebellion (Luke and Smith 2014, 14). Thus the Militia Act of July 1862, which gave Lincoln carte
blanche (Luke and Smith 2014, 14) to make use of black resources. Although these acts were issued
with the intention of blacks serving as military labour it gave way to many possibilities. The first to
act on these possibilities was Major General Jon C. Frémont, in August 1861, who emancipated the
slaves of Missouri rebels. By late August, following him, but surpassing freeing slaves, Republican
U.S. senator and brigadier general James H. Jim Lane, a Free Soiler and

On the morning of May 18, 1980, the United States of America experienced its deadliest and most
destructive volcanic eruption in history. Briefly succeeding a magnitude 5.1 earthquake, an enormous
slab of Mount St. Helens northern flank collapsed in a massive debris avalanche. This landslide was
the largest to transpire on Earth in recorded history and caused the volcanoes magma system to

Helens will occur. The main issue is that it is impossible to prevent it, or stop it once an eruption has
begun. However, procedures can be established to reduce the lives lost or damage to property should a

years. The seismometers used in 1980 are prehistoric compared to todays equipment. Nowadays,
seismometers can hear low frequency indications of fluid moving deep below the Earth s surface

and detect gases rising from volcanos summits. Remote monitoring equipment is used 24 hours a day
and 365 days a year by the USGS (USGS, 2014). With that regard, the success of a monitoring system
depends primarily on how fast detection occurs and the time needed to notify public if evacuation s
required. Although, monitoring might detect possible eruption but the magnitude of an eruption is still
difficult to determine (Crandell and Mullineaux,

Machiavelli Plato Rebuplic Prince Comparison

Machiavelli (The Prince, ch.15, pp. 47 #8211; 49 and ch. 18, pp.54f). What is the most important
difference between the two accounts? In your view, which account is better, and why? For centuries,
every ruler created their own principles and rules and somehow they ruled millions of people and

On the other hand, a true guardian, who searches for justice and wisdom in his all time an all life,

he signifies that #8220;then it seems a cowardly and slavish nature will take no part in the philosophy

justice, courage, and moderation #8221; [Republic, p.161, 487a]. These characteristics truly show the
idealistic position of Plato. He tries to create a perfect ruler for his utopian world kallipolis.
But, not surprisingly, Machiavelli is against this imaginary ruler. Although it would be marvelous if a
ruler have all these good qualities, he believes that a ruler who has all of these good characteristics
cannot exist in practice [Selected Political Writings, The Prince ch. 15, p.48]. For him this image is
suitable only for an ideal world. Unlike Plato, Machiavelli highlights that in practical reality, for a
ruler, who wants to hold on to power, it is necessary to learn how not to be good. Misery, cruelty,
duplicity, irreligion or untrustworthiness are evil qualities, for

The Eskimo curlew (Numenius borealis) is a medium sized shorebird with long legs and a long thin,
bill that curves downwards. The curlew s colors are usually mottled brown, on the upper parts, while

a jolt. Quickly, you rush to your parents room and tell them what happened. They know exactly what
to do, and soon you head back to bed, ready to dream once more. But what would you have done if
your parents weren t as understanding? Would you still have come to them for help? And if not, how
would you have dealt with the problem on your own, and what differences would there have been in
the outcome? John from Brave New World, Grendel from Grendel, and The Creature from
Frankenstein each suffered from a childhood with little to no parental interaction, ... Show more

Neglect often spurs negative thoughts within a child, which may either be directed inward or outward
(Olive 69). With Grendel and the Creature s frequent outbursts and destructive behavior, it is obvious
they chose the latter, causing them to show signs of conduct disorder (directing feelings outward
would involve violence towards others and other acts of aggression, which are key factors to
diagnosing conduct disorder) (Keenan 328). The aggression is caused by their strive for satisfaction in
fulfilling their superegos, because it is impossible for them to do so ( Psychologically ). The Creature,
desperate for empathy, tried to convince the blind De Lacy to trust him, but his plans were foiled when
the rest of the family saw him. In a last effort, the Creature seizes the old man and tells him Save and
protect me! You and your family are the friends whom I seek. Do not you desert me in the hour of
trial! which is then mistaken for an attempted attack. The cottagers quickly leave, abandoning the
Creature, who shortly after destroys the house in which they lived (Shelley 93 95). Similarly, Grendel,
attempting to return a corpse he had found in the woods, revealed himself to the humans, hoping for
peace and friendship. Instead, the men attacked him with spears and battle axes. Grendel then crushed
the body in his arms and fled (Gardner 51 52). These rejections thus had a lasting effect on

The federal courts include the Trial Courts, which hear cases that are both criminal and civil in nature.
Next, there are the Appellate Courts, where appealed cases from the Trial Courts are heard. The head
of the Legislative branch is the United States Supreme Court (U.S. Court System, n.d.). The United
States Supreme Court was established in 1789. The United States of America had just won the
Revolutionary War a mere six years prior, and the new nation formed a fair and just government to
ensure freedom and equality to its people. The founding fathers created and signed the United States
Constitution in 1787. The U.S. Constitution stated in Article III that congress was tasked with
implementing a Supreme Court, as well as inferior courts, to hear and decide matters of dispute of the
people. In 1789, Congress passed the Judiciary Act of 1789, which formed what we know today as the
United States Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is the only court specifically established by the
Constitution, and all others were created by Congress (History of the Federal Judiciary, n.d.). In 1789,
the Supreme Court consisted of six total justices. There was a chief justice, and five associate justices.
Congress was granted the authority of how to form the Supreme Court. They also task the justices of
the Supreme Court to participate in the principle trial courts of the federal judiciary to learn the
procedures for the state courts. The size of the Supreme

Colonists Dissatisfaction with British Rule Brought about...
I can t really criticize the Tea Party people, because I came into the White House pretty much on the
same basis that they have become popular. That is dissatisfaction with the way things are going in
Washington and disillusionment and discouragement about the government. That is a quote from
Jimmy carter on the Boston Tea Party. On April 27, 1773 the British Parliament passed a bill called the
Tea Act, saving the nearly bankrupt East India Company by giving them full control of trade on tea to
the colonies. The East India Company paid its taxes giving the company de facto monopoly on trade
to the colonies. The East India Company had the right to sell to the colonies, but the colonists didn t
like it and it led to the Boston Tea Party.

passes on April 27, 1773 the East India Company was going bankrupt. The Tea Act was not meant to
raise prices for the colonies tea, it was meant to save the nearly bankrupt East India Company, who
was a key factor in the British economy. The Tea Act gave the East Indie Company a monopoly and
tea trade in the colonies in America. The colonists had never accepted the constitutionality of the duty
on tea, and the Tea Act brought back their hatred toward it. Their anger showed at the Boston Tea
Party on December 16, 1773 which colonists boarded East India Company ships and dumped their
loads of tea overboard. Parliament responded with a series of

Personal Narrative-Marching Band
We were this close to being stripped of our Undefeated title. The band sat there in the bleachers,
stunned as the announcer pulled up the scores and was ready to reveal first place. Blood rushed
through my veins and the butterflies in my stomach were more active as ever. After all of our hard
work, it would have been a shame if we did not conclude the season with a bang. The announcer
raised her microphone and everything seemed to come to a halt. Memories began to race through my
mind as I started to look back at the time when I first joined the marching band. Coming into high
school, I was not reluctant to try out new things, and marching band was an activity that would allow
me to open myself up to others and develop a strong sense

Essay about Nelson Mandela s Long Walk To Freedom
Nelson Mandela in his book, Long Walk to Freedom argues through the first five parts that a black
individual must deal, coop, and grow through a society that is hindering their lives with apartheid and
suppression of their rightful land. Rolihlanla Mphakanyiswa or clan name, Madiba was born on July

Now let us examine Nelson in closer detail.
Nelson is an individual who fought through many hardships, but was also faced with decisions that
affected his future, his family, and his livelihood. As we look at Nelson deeper, we can see many
interesting points. He was opened to new ideas and beliefs through his experiences in the schools of
Heraldtown and Fort Hare, but knew there was something better. He decided to travel to Johannesburg
to find new and greater opportunities. While, in Johannesburg, he believed education would be a key
asset. While working for a small firm, he took classes at University of South Africa and eventually
Wits University. Here is where his mind and social life flourished. He interacted with great minds and
influential political individuals. He talked to many Africans without proper education, who contained
more knowledge and better social skills than many Africans with education. But, he still persisted in
acquiring his B.A. Wits University brought his life to new extents. He was also talking to Indians,
Coloureds, and whites for the first time in his life and Becoming friends with many more prominent
African individuals. Nelson soon joined the ANC and became very prominent in the fight for freedom.

Jane Austen s Influence On Society
As a well traveled young woman for her day and age, Jane Austen undoubtedly mixed her personal
experiences and encounters into her classic tales. Many critics have analyzed the characters in her
novels as being comparable to people Austen actually knew in her lifetime. Moreover, critics say that
Austen transcribed her own self through most of her main heroines, whether it was how she actually
acted, or what she desired to be like in real life. However, not many critics have touched on the
importance of the aunt figure that is present throughout Austen s novels. Most aunts throughout her
novels, although not major characters, prove to be some of the most influential on the protagonists. I
would argue that because Austen regarded herself as a responsible and integral part in all of her nieces
and nephews lives, she transcribed this throughout her characters. Thus, by acknowledging the insight
and importance of the aunts in her novels, we can actually learn more as to how Austen must have
been when playing her real life role as Aunt Jane. Within her own life, Austen understood the
importance of the extended family. She was an aunt to over 30 nieces and nephews, and often
considered the favorite. In some cases, Austen even took over care of some of her nieces and nephews
after their mothers passed. From recovered letters to relatives biographies, the majority of the
statements regard Austen as performing her aunt duties to a T. Austen s nephew, James Edward Austen

Weapons of War The top Russian exported item is oil, but in the realm of diversity the next major

Even though Russia is gaining revenue by a constant war it will prosper more in the reconstruction
phase. Once the civil end Russia will have the sole rights for future arms to fill the void caused by the

locked in with maintenance contract and parts to fix the military equipment that Syria has bought. The
Russians have taken the chance to grow it arms trade in the Syrian conflict by selling to the both side

the conflict in Syria is greatly advancing the arms trade in another way. Since the cold war Russia and

Rennie Mcquilkin The Collecting Poem Summary
Rennie McQuilkin presents meaning in his poems through his precise word choice and use of
figurative language which blends in with carefully chosen ideas and memories. With art being his
main focus, McQuilkin splits up his work into two parts; a narrative beginning and a more symbolic
end in both The Collecting and in Birth of a Poet. The Collecting is one of the poems in the book
North of Eden which is quite literally divided into two separate parts. With that divide McQuilkin
intends to separate the reality and the dream; both of which the narrator experiences himself. At the
beginning, in part I, most of the stanzas are pure description and not so much of reflection. Uncle slips
a hand through the noose of the turtle line, and lowers himself, this is a good example of the narrator
describing what he observed while being on the boat. Most of the first part is similar to the quote
above and McQuilkin mainly plays on the importance of the details in the story. The word choice in
part I is not necessarily complicated, the author really did intend it to be fully understood. It is
challenging to find meaning in the first few stanzas, however, as the poem continues it becomes easier
to recreate the full picture of the event. Even when he carves away the under shell, rips out the guts,
depicts the narrator in part I of the poem, specifying every little detail. One other unique feature of
McQuilkin is that he does not try to overcomplicate his poetry through the use of unnecessary
elements; his words are simple but very thought through. Through the use of figurative language in
part II and more specifically through incorporating metaphors the author is able to capture most of the
reader s interest. The two parts of this poem signify the reality and in contrast, the dream that the
narrator is having later on. Using metaphors McQuilkin is able to add color to the dream of the
narrator. It is almost as if he was trying to connect it to some other event from his memory. The beauty
of poetry and art in general is that there are infinite ways to create an infinite amount of meanings for
everyone. The art McQuilkin creates is both storylike and allegorical this combination strengthens the

Increasing Cultural Competence in the Field of...
Raise your hand on the side that you hear the sound. Now open your mouth and stick out your tongue
for me. Close it and then make an ooo sound, like a ghost. This is what a brief clip of a speech and
language evaluation might sound like if someone were to be observing. But imagine that the test that
was just observed was over and now the clinician must speak to the parents; however, they can only
speak to one: the father, due to the strict Muslim culture that the family comes from. What should be
done since typically the most important person to inform is the mom and speaking to her is not
acceptable? (Cara). This is a dilemma that a Missouri State University Communication Sciences and
Disorders, Speech and Language pathology graduate student recently encountered. One in which she
was unprepared for because while Missouri State Communication Sciences and Disorders professors,
teach students how to be aware of different cultures, they don t necessarily teach students how to
handle them as they come. This lack of cultural competency poses a problem and in turn hinders a
speech language pathologist s ability to provide equal, appropriate and accessible services for groups
affected by speech and language impediments. Therefore, speech language pathologists must increase
their cultural competence in different cultures and be better prepared to provide services for patients
who may not be primarily English speakers or hail from a different cultural background that is not as

Are You A Mentor Chapter 1 Summary
Chapter 5: Are You a Mentor? , provides advice on how to and how not to find a mentor. Having
mentorship is important to career succession, but what is the best way to find and maintain a mentor.
Since, unfortunately, women seem to have more difficulty than men in finding a mentor, Sandberg
suggests that rather than asking someone to be your mentor, women should Excel and you will get a
mentor. She emphasizes to do good work, ask profound questions and always be respectful of you

Many ambitious and successful women in the workplace begin declining offers or stop pursuing better
positions due to fear that they may not be able to handle the responsibility once they have a child, long
before they are even close to having a child. Sandberg suggests that women not take their foot of the
gas pedal or put on the brakes until they need to. In chapter 8: Make a Partner a Real Partner,
Sandberg stresses the importance of having a partner who is willing to split the roles at home so that
the time and workload is 50/50. She believes that just as women must be more empowered at work,
men must be more empowered at home. Admitting that this easier said than done, it ends up being
better for everyone. In chapter 9, The Myth of Doing it All, Sandberg explains that it is impossible for
anyone to do it all. Many working mothers feel guilty when they compare themselves to stay at home
mothers, assuming that they spend more time with their children than working mothers can. Studies
show no difference in child outcome from working mothers and stay at home

  • 2. American Colonies Dbq During the 1600s and 1700s, the English colonists established colonies in North America. There are many reasons and people that were responsible for this movement. For freedom or because of politics, many of the English colonists fled the English rule. Though, there are two other reasons, economy and religion, that heavily influenced the creation and success of the colonies; especially the Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and other Southern colonies. Therefore, English colonists established some colonies in North America for economic and religious reasons. The Pennsylvania and Maryland colonies were established for religious reasons. First there was Pennsylvania. It was founded by William Penn. He stated All men have a natural and indefeasible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Virginia their economy was based on tobacco sales. It was so valuable because it couldn t be grown in England. English tobacco imports from America in 1620 to 1775 went up in weight from 0.1 to 102.0 million pounds. Overall Virginia s profit came mainly from tobacco exports. Along with the increase of tobacco, the number of slaves, in Virginia especially, also went up in this time period. This was because the colonists used slaves to farm the tobacco; the more tobacco the more slaves they needed . Virginia had resources besides tobacco, too; they were pigs and corn. The other Southern colonies, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, had many other natural resources that made them a perfect spot for founding a colony, as well. These resources were helpful for getting the colonies started, as well as providing a steady profit from trading and selling. North Carolina had Naval stores, corn, rice, pigs, and tobacco. In South Carolina, just like the North, had Naval stores, corn, rice, and pigs; South Carolina had something else, indigo. This was also a valuable resource, as it could only be found in certain places. Georgia had indigo too; as well as pigs and rice. Virginia had a strong economy because of their tobacco production. The other southern colonies also had an abundance of other valuable resources. All on the coast, exporting their goods was an easy way to strong ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Underground Economies And Its Effects On Canada This paper looks into the different types of underground economies and its effects on Canada, and argues that underground economy is destructive to the society and should be eliminated as much as possible. With evidence from Statistics Canada, it shows the percentage of how much the black market is affecting the GDP. It also discusses the main causes as to why some sellers choose to be in the underground economy and how they could benefit from it temporarily. Underground economies in a long run are invisible actions that creates very visible consequences, including the vicious cycle of low tax revenue, less quality and quantity in public goods, discourage in money circulation, drawbacks to GDP, lowered employment rate and a society that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All kinds of goods and services are available in an underground economy. The most commonly traded goods and services are goods and services that are available in the official market, but at a lower cost in the black market; or goods and services that has a limited supply in the official market, but are sold at an elevated price in the Black market. Despite the trade being illegal, as long as both the seller and buyer comes to an agreement on the price, they trade privately with cash to avoid being detected. Although many sellers get away with this, at the end of the day underground economy is a continued cycle of affecting the country and its citizens, including sellers and buyers in the black market, mostly its tax revenues will be affected, then the GDP, and finally its citizens. All Black market trades are done in the shadows, but if the root causes of the continued growth in the underground economy are known, things could be done to eliminate the number of black market trades as much as possible. Underground economy is disruptive to the society, to avoid these negative effects; it should be eliminated as much as possible. The unreported economy causes tax evasion and that affects everybody in Canada. There are various negative effects regarding the black market; doubtful the most significant one is the effect it has on tax revenues the unreported economy. Tax revenue is the sum of all different kinds of taxes collected ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Fate of Women in The Birthmark Essay The Fate of Women in The Birthmark Wilson Sullivan in Nathaniel Hawthorne in New England Men of Letters states that Nathaniel Hawthorne s tale, The Birthmark, depicts the efforts of a deranged scientist to obtain total perfection in his wife by removal of a facial blemish. In this story the scientist operates on the superficial level of the physical world, while the woman, the truly heroic woman, functions on the level of the heart and soul, the more significant level. She it is who in her virtue provides for the reader an example to live by, even though she loses her life in the process. The wife s virtue leads her onward and upward; the husband s lack thereof and inability to appreciate virtue in his Georgiana leads him downward and downward. Even after Aylmer has persuaded a beautiful woman to become his wife, he is not capable of loving her properly, unselfishly, because he had devoted himself, however, too unreservedly to scientific studies ever to be weaned from them by any second passion. The narrator seeks to justify this error or lack in Aylmer by explaining that it was not unusual for the love of science to rival the love of woman in its depth and absorbing energy. Already at the outset of the tale, the reader perceives that Georgiana is going to be shortchanged in this marriage. She is exposed to the problem initially when her husband asks whether it never occurred to you that the mark upon your cheek might be removed? Aylmer is in quest of physical perfection in his wife; unfortunately he discounts her inner, spiritual value so clearly manifested in her comment: ``To tell you the truth it has been so often called a charm that I was simple enough to imagine it might be so. Robots are mainly used to perform tasks that humans dislike or cannot perform safely. Therefore, a robot is a robot as it is capable of movement, is reprogrammable, and can be programmed in order to complete a task/tasks. The assignment was to develop and program a robot prototype which would assist an audience/community. I tried dance, gymnastics, painting, and singing; nothing was ever something I could say, Hey, this is me, this is what I love to do. Now a freshman in college I m majoring in Nursing but theatre is still something that I would give a leg and arm to do. At Butler, However, I love theatre here but it is very different then it was in high school. High school theatre is a better working experience than college theatre is because the experience is more fun, its a closer environment, greater responsibly. When I started started high school, my friend convinced me to play softball with her. It seemed fun so I tried out. Companies in the initial stages of foreign expansion must be aware of the regional economic groups that encompass countries with good manufacturing locations or market opportunities. Electroconvulsive Therapy Argumentative Essay Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), formerly known as electroshock therapy, is a treatment for mental illnesses that runs small electric currents through the brain, with the intention of bringing on a brief seizure. The goal is to change brain chemistry to reverse symptoms of certain mental illnesses. During the 1940s 50s, ECT was the most effective way of treating certain mental illnesses and was used frequently throughout many countries (Kendell, 1982). One of the main illnesses ECT is used for is depression, but it is also used for other mental illnesses, such as mania and some cases of schizophrenia. Although ECT is shown to be effective, it does not always mean that is a safe form of treatment. If ECT causes patients to have severe brain damage and cognitive deficits, it would be considered unethical to use, regardless if it an effective form of treatment for certain mental illnesses (Reisner, 2003). There are limitations to ECT that doctors need to be aware of, such as patients having existing medical conditions that could counteract with ECT treatment and cause damage to the patient. Informed consent is an important process in undergoing ECT, it should let the patient know all of the risks and all of the benefits of ECT. Many have suggested that although the risk of brain damage is reported to be low, it is still an important deciding factor for a patient who is eligible for undergoing ECT. Informed consent should include risks, benefits, acknowledge post treatment risks and confusion, the possibility or uncertain effects of the treatment, as well as alternative options (Reisner, 2003). Because a risk of a treatment is not always certain, it should still be required to inform a patient of the possible effects of the treatment they are undergoing, due to the minimal possibility that brain damage or death could still ... • 11. The Greasy Lake And Life After High School In both Greasy Lake and Life After High School the protagonists are both subjected to external conflict that forever changes their course in life. With so much emphasis on the differences between individuals these days, it is imperative that people recognize this powerful commonality between the spectrum of humanity. Two completely different people living completely different lives are somehow still directly linked through the intrinsic nature of life. Even though the narrator from Greasy Lake , Joe as he will be called from simplicity sake and Sunny from Life After High School are separated by gender and culture, both share the commonality of a metamorphosis as the direct result of an external conflict. Regardless of the shape or appearance of this metamorphosis, I purpose that both Joe and Sunny are of the same element that only differ in structure and appearance due to the differences in both the stimuli and base parameters in their life. In this case, Sunny and joe s base parameters or starting points differ quite a bit. Joe is a greaser working on meeting the criteria and trying to live up to the name. He had the look and behavior down pat, wearing torn up leather jackets, and striking elaborate poses to show people he doesn t give a damn. Yet, he is still largely an innocent adolescent just trying to find his way in the world. Sunny on the other hand was a cheerleader and the light that her name implies. • 14. The First Confiscation Act Of September 1862 With this knowledge Congress passed Major General Benjamin F. Butler quick thinking into a policy, the First Confiscation Act, in August of 1861 which stated that the federal government had authority to seize any property owned by the Confederates which included slaves. By March the following year, an Article of War was produced which prohibited any military or naval services from returning run away or fugitive slaves to their respective masters, nullifying the Fugitive Acts all together. When the Second Confiscation Act was announced in July of 1862 it declared forever free Confederate owned slaves who made their way to federal lines or who resided in rebellious territory that fell to federal forces (Luke and Smith 2014, 14). Also in the bill, was the legitimisation of the president to utilise persons of African descent in any way that he considered necessary and proper for the suppression of the rebellion (Luke and Smith 2014, 14). Thus the Militia Act of July 1862, which gave Lincoln carte blanche (Luke and Smith 2014, 14) to make use of black resources. Although these acts were issued with the intention of blacks serving as military labour it gave way to many possibilities. The first to act on these possibilities was Major General Jon C. What is the most important difference between the two accounts? In your view, which account is better, and why? For centuries, every ruler created their own principles and rules and somehow they ruled millions of people and controlled their future. But, not surprisingly, Machiavelli is against this imaginary ruler. Although it would be marvelous if a ruler have all these good qualities, he believes that a ruler who has all of these good characteristics cannot exist in practice [Selected Political Writings, The Prince ch. 15, p.48]. For him this image is suitable only for an ideal world. With Grendel and the Creature s frequent outbursts and destructive behavior, it is obvious they chose the latter, causing them to show signs of conduct disorder (directing feelings outward would involve violence towards others and other acts of aggression, which are key factors to diagnosing conduct disorder) (Keenan 328). The aggression is caused by their strive for satisfaction in fulfilling their superegos, because it is impossible for them to do so ( Psychologically ). The Creature, desperate for empathy, tried to convince the blind De Lacy to trust him, but his plans were foiled when the rest of the family saw him. Many critics have analyzed the characters in her novels as being comparable to people Austen actually knew in her lifetime. Moreover, critics say that Austen transcribed her own self through most of her main heroines, whether it was how she actually acted, or what she desired to be like in real life. However, not many critics have touched on the importance of the aunt figure that is present throughout Austen s novels. Most aunts throughout her novels, although not major characters, prove to be some of the most influential on the protagonists. I would argue that because Austen regarded herself as a responsible and integral part in all of her nieces and nephews lives, she transcribed this throughout her characters. Thus, by acknowledging the insight and importance of the aunts in her novels, we can actually learn more as to how Austen must have been when playing her real life role as Aunt Jane. • 28. Rennie Mcquilkin The Collecting Poem Summary Rennie McQuilkin presents meaning in his poems through his precise word choice and use of figurative language which blends in with carefully chosen ideas and memories. With art being his main focus, McQuilkin splits up his work into two parts; a narrative beginning and a more symbolic end in both The Collecting and in Birth of a Poet. The Collecting is one of the poems in the book North of Eden which is quite literally divided into two separate parts. With that divide McQuilkin intends to separate the reality and the dream; both of which the narrator experiences himself. At the beginning, in part I, most of the stanzas are pure description and not so much of reflection. Uncle slips a hand through the noose of the turtle line, and lowers himself, this is a good example of the narrator describing what he observed while being on the boat. Most of the first part is similar to the quote above and McQuilkin mainly plays on the importance of the details in the story. The word choice in part I is not necessarily complicated, the author really did intend it to be fully understood. It is challenging to find meaning in the first few stanzas, however, as the poem continues it becomes easier to recreate the full picture of the event. Even when he carves away the under shell, rips out the guts, depicts the narrator in part I of the poem, specifying every little detail. One other unique feature of McQuilkin is that he does not try to overcomplicate his poetry through the use of unnecessary elements; his words are simple but very thought through. Through the use of figurative language in part II and more specifically through incorporating metaphors the author is able to capture most of the reader s interest. The two parts of this poem signify the reality and in contrast, the dream that the narrator is having later on. Using metaphors McQuilkin is able to add color to the dream of the narrator. It is almost as if he was trying to connect it to some other event from his memory. The beauty of poetry and art in general is that there are infinite ways to create an infinite amount of meanings for everyone.
