How To Write A Definition Essay
Crafting an essay on the subject of "How To Write A Definition Essay" may initially seem like a
straightforward task, as the topic itself suggests a clear direction. However, delving into the
intricacies of guiding someone on the art of defining terms and concepts can pose its own set of
challenges.
To begin with, one must navigate the balance between providing a comprehensive overview and
avoiding unnecessary complexity. The challenge lies in elucidating the key components of a

Striking this balance requires a deep understanding of the nuances of definition essays and the
ability to communicate this knowledge effectively.
Another hurdle is the need for a structured approach. A definition essay, like any other form of
academic writing, demands a logical progression of ideas. Organizing thoughts coherently,
ensuring a smooth flow from one point to the next, and maintaining a coherent structure
throughout the essay can be challenging.
Moreover, selecting the right examples and illustrations to enhance understanding adds an
additional layer of difficulty. Choosing relevant and engaging examples that resonate with a
diverse audience is a skill that requires a keen understanding of both the subject matter and the
potential readership.

Analysis Of Theodore Roethke Root Cellar
In Theodore Roethke Root Cellar , there is a heavy use of vivid and stylistic
imagery. In the first line, the speaker states, Nothing would sleep in that cellar,
dank as a ditch. We are given that something is refusing to sleep that is, to die and
at the same time being dank gets us thinking about things that are undead . In line
two, the speaker states, Bulbs broke out of boxes hunting for chinks in the dark.
This tells us that things are still growing and they are looking for the light. In the
next following line the speaker mentions, Shoots dangled and dropped (3). This
gives us the image of the shoots coming out of the bulbs. The shoots dangle and
droop towards whatever light possible. In line four, the speaker gives us an idea of
the type of housing they are in, mildewed crates. The moisture creates mold and
mildew. It also creates prettier life like plants. As you can see, mold and mildew
are life, and they grow alongside the plants. In line six, the speaker brings us a
smell by saying congress. Roethke must mean just the coming together or
gathering of smells. In line seven, the speaker give us another sense of smell,
Roots ripe as old bait, pulpy stems, rank, silo rich, leaf mold, manure, lime, piled
against slippery planks. He gives us this image and the sense of smell of mold and
rot to show it is still life. These words for example would be ripe, pulpy, rank, and
rich. The last two lines, Nothing would give up life: Even the dirt kept breathing
Straight Edge Movement
The main topic of this article is punk culture, but specifically a subset of hardcore
punk culture called Straight Edge. The article traces the evolution of the Straight
Edge movement from the 1980 s 2000 s. This author argues that the Straight Edge
movement evolved to become a lifestyle and an ideology. In short, the author argues
that as the Straight Edge movement evolved, the original ideology associated with
the movement shifted in the opposite direction due in part to the changing
demographic of the Straight Edge movement. The author s primary sources include
interviews and testimonials from individuals that were part of the movement, usually
taken from magazines or books about the Straight Edge movement. In order to
establish what the Straight Edge movement was all about, this author also looks at
the actual Hardline Manifesto from which the Straight Edge movement branched off
of, but she also uses CD s from bands like Minor Threat to track the musical changes
that were taking place in the movement as well. Unlike other articles, this author uses

Even though the movement started out with promoting abstinence and veganism, the
ambiguity of the associated ideology and the changing demographics of the culture
have distorted the original values of the movement. Furthermore, this contribution
also reveals the dangers of making societal values a center of a movement, especially
since the dominant demographic of the movement can change what the values of the
movement itself. In order to attract people to a movement, the values of a movement
have to allow for a certain ambiguity, but that ambiguity can be twisted and stretched
based on the demographic and that brings up real life implications, especially when it
comes to enacting the movement s
The Ways And Means Approved The Marihuana Tax Act
The Ways and Means approved the Marihuana Tax Act despite the pushback from
the American Medical Association. The importance of that approval from the Ways
and Means Committee can t be understated because many Congressmen blindly
accepted their recommendations. Otherwise, they were completely unfamiliar with
marijuana. The bill came up for vote in the House at the end of a Friday session
with many House members having already left for the weekend. Rep. Snell from
New York requested that the vote take place at another time. I don t know anything
about the bill. It may be all right and it may be that everyone is for it, but as a
general principle, I am against bringing up any important legislation, and I suppose
this is important, since it... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rep. Vinson from Ways and Means lied about Woodward s testimony. He said that
Dr. Wharton and the AMA fully supported the bill.
The Marihuana Tax Act passed through the Senate just as easily. Senate leaders
brushed off thorough testimony from hemp farmers who warned that the bill would
end their business. They lobbied for an exemption for hemp from the bill. One of
those of those hemp farmers, Matt Rens, grew quite frustrated with the proceedings:
Matt Rens: The real purpose of this bill is not to raise money, is it?
Senator Brown: Well, we are sticking to the proposition that it is.
Matt Rens: It will cost a million (jobs).
Senator Brown: We thank you, Mr. Rens. (dismissed)
The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 didn t actually ban marijuana. Like the Harrison
Act, it effectively taxed marijuana into the shadows of the black market. Marijuana
had sold for about $1 an ounce at the time, but the bill added a tax of $100 an ounce.
The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 effectively taxed and regulated the hemp industry out
of business.
The reporting and registration requirements alone brought operations for hemp
manufacturers to a standstill. The Bureau of Narcotics received many letters from the
hemp industry requesting leniency. One letter, just months after the bill passed, from
H.W. Bellrose on October 12, 1937 promised that a re birth of the industry was
imminent because of the capacity of his World
Atlantic Salmon
Reading Questions #2:
1. Griffiths and Armstrong used a variety of different sources when explaining the
significance of the study they wanted to attempt. They based their study off of the
Hamilton model of social behaviour and its evolution, this models states that an
individual is able to aid in their own fitness through the general fitness of the
population, this occurs when an individual is less aggressive and attempts to support
it s relatives. As well it was found that individuals that are related to one another tend
to be closely associated. When looking at the Atlantic salmon it was discovered that
they use a chemical to recognize and aggregate with their kin. Many laboratory tests
were conducted similar to the one Griffiths and Armstrong ... Show more content on

The main results found in this experiment can be summed up in the 4 figures
provided. Figure 1 looks at the time spent in each feeding area by the Atlantic
salmon. It shows that a large portion of time was spent in patch two (which was the
area in which most of the food was supplied). It also shows that there was a
significant difference in the interactions between related and unrelated fish (higher
for related species). Figure 2 analyzes the amount of food consumed by the larger
more dominant fish. It showed that the amount of food that was ingested varied
considerably by the dominance of each fish, this value also increased as the
experiment continued. It was also noted that the fish that were related seemed to
evenly distribute the food among them where as there was a more uneven
distribution between related and unrelated fish. As well Figure 2 looks at the way
the fish forage for their food. Figure 3a looks at time spent but the subordinate fish in
the more abundant feeding areas and their movements suggested that the presence of
the more dominant fish restricted them. Figure 3b looks at their movement and
foraging behaviours after the removal of the dominant fish. This lead to a significant
increase in the amount of food the smaller fish were consuming as well they were
foraging more beneficially once the dominant fish were removed. Figure 4a and 4b
compare time spent and the number of larvae consumed when the dominant fish were
both present and absent. It was
Robert Edmond Jones
Robert Edmond Jones was born December 12, 1887, in Milton, New Hampshire.
Jones was the second child born to Fred and Emma Jane Cowell Jones. He began
to take violin lessons at the age of nine, eventually playing in the Harvard Pierian
Sodality Orchestra, but even when he was a child he was sure being an artist was
his aspiration. In 1905, Jones graduated from Nute High School and enrolled in
Harvard University the succeeding autumn. During his time at Harvard, he pursued
a liberal arts course of study and graduated cum laude in 1910. In this same time

He was an unashamed beggar for beauty and an unsurpassed inventor of it. Here
are some of his famous quotations from The Dramatic Imagination, We have
learned that beneath the surface of an ordinary everyday normal casual conscious
existence there lies a vast dynamic world of impulse and dream, a hinterland of
energy which has an independent existence of its own and laws of its own: laws
which motivate all our thoughts and actions. Our playwrights are attempting to
express directly to the audience the unspoken thoughts of their characters, wo
show us not only the patterns of their conscious behavior but the pattern of their
subconscious lives. We accept motion pictures unthinkingly as objective
transcripts of life, whereas in reality they are subjective images of life. On stage
we shall see the actual characters of the drama; on the screen we shall see their
hidden secret selves. The theatre is a school we shall never have done with

think [the theatre] needs also actors who have in them a kind of wildness, an
exuberance, a take it or leave it quality, a dangerous quality. I am indebted to the
great Madame Freisinger for teaching me the value of simplicity in the theatre. The

Compare And Contrast Colerridge And Wordsworth
Imagery has been one of the most pivotal movements in the cultural and intellectual
history of English Literature. The comparison is not only among the works of their
own rather it also includes the differences and traces of similarity with the works of
others writers of different ages. The analysis is done by reading the actual text and
interpreting the meaning by understanding the deep phrases hidden in the poetry.
Different critics showed different aspects by their research. Some found out merits
and some found out demerits in the works of Wordsworth and Coleridge. The merits
includes uniqueness, healing power of poetry, and interpretation of their imagination
for things whereas the demerits include slack of humour, lack of range and lyricism
in their poetry. On a whole Wordsworth and Coleridge works have gained lot of
interest and tempted many critics to write on their methods and strategies which they
adopted in their work. A new chapter in the history of English poetry opened with the
publication of Lyrical Ballads which were the results of Wordsworth and Coleridge
friendship after the revolution. They included two different kinds of poetry in these
ballets. Wordsworth talked about the subjects that were chosen from ordinary life and

Etruscan Culture
Internet Exploration Project 2
The Etruscan culture is quite a mystery to scholars. All that remains of this
civilization are the tombs of their dead and the artwork that resides within these
tombs. From what has been gathered and interpreted, the Etruscans belief in life after
death was similar to that of the Egyptians. They believed death was a journey to
afterlife, a physical location, and that the deceased would require the same type of
goods and materials as in the world of the living. Therefore, within their tombs they
would paint scenes of celebration, hunting and religious rituals, as well as beds,
livestock, and even slippers. Etruscan funerary art is highly representative of their
civilization with their paintings displaying the daily ... Show more content on

You see men standing in a boat on a river, fishing and hunting birds. Perhaps this is
the telling of a fishing trip the deceased took part in in life. These paintings device
the essence of the Etruscans culture in pursuit of easing the transition to afterlife.
With scenes of good memories it may have been thought death wouldn t be so scary.
With today s modern culture, death is a private event of mourning and grieving.
We no longer as a community gather to celebrate the life of a late neighbor, instead
this event is intended for family and close friends. We either bury our loved ones
in a local cemetery or have their remains cremated and kept in an urn for viewing.
The rituals performed by individuals in the event of a death have become
superficial with a lack of meaning. The size of a headstone is only determined by
how much money you have. The extravagance of the wake or any type of
ceremony performed is determined by how much money you have. And for those
who can t even afford a burial and opt for cremation, the elegance of the urn used to
hold the ashes of your loved one is once again determined by how much money you
have. Death has become an event of profit, for if you truly love your departed
relative you ll buy the most expensive casket or the biggest

The teacher will say, Okay class I have given you a square sheet of paper and you
should have colored pencils at your desk. Now without talking to your tablemates I
would like you to draw me a picture of a seed.
The teacher will give the students an appropriate amount of time to draw. During this
time the teacher will walk around the room and observe the students.
The teacher will say, Alright times up. I would like everyone to hold up your
drawings for everyone to see.
The students will hold up their pictures and the class will scan the room to look at
everyone s picture.
The teacher will say, You are probably wondering why I had you draw a picture of
a seed. Well today we are going to look at different seeds in our center over here.
This center is going to be a little different than our usual lessons. In the center you
will all be taking turns instead of everyone working at once. The centers are going
to have 3 different challenges that you are going to try and solve on your own. Each

Literary Analysis Of The Rocking Horse Winner
Hester is money hungry suburban housewife who loves money so much, she shoves
her family to the side. She lives in nice neighborhood with her husband and her
children. Hester is always in the pursuit of more and more money because she wants
other people to see that she lives lavishly and expensively. D.H. Lawrence s The
Rocking Horsewinner is a short story about the importance of true loveand not
substituting it for materialistic things. At the beginning, the son Paul thinks to
himself that he has the luck to make money the money he believes is required to
earn the love of their cold hearted mother. He starts riding his expensive rocking
horse because he thinks he will learn how he can make money for his mother. He
thinks that riding the toy horse will tell him the winning race horses. Paul then
wants to bet money on the racehorses and miraculously wins, very large sums of
money. He arranges for 5,000 pounds to be given to his mother on her birthday.
Paul s mother, without knowing Paul is the source for her newfound money, tells
her son that he needs a break because he looks to be stressed out. She comes home
late one night from a party to find Paul is aggressively riding his toy without
listening to his mother s advice. Paul falls off his rocking horse screaming Malabar!
For multiple days Paul laid unconscious. He wakes up to find that Malabar had won
the race and he has just won eighty thousand pounds but he then dies abruptly at the

The Youth Of A New Country
1.Grabbing people s attention with certain programs can be a hard task to achieve,
especially if they don t know your language that well, or they are newcomers to your
country. The way I would reach out to the newcomer youth in the Greater Toronto
area would be creating a flier to post around schools and public places to promote the
program, this way the more instances that people see the flier, the more interested
in it they become. Another way of grabbing the attention of newcomers to pull
them into coming to our program would be giving out packages explaining to the
parents of the children what our program can benefit to their children who are
being welcomed into a new country. This makes sure the child s parents are aware
of the programs that the YMCA has for them, plus give them a chance to look over
and contemplate if they believe it is going to be a good opportunity for their
children. Lastly, I would develop a presentation, and go into the schools most
populated with newcomer kids to introduce them to the types of programs that
they can get involved in. I would even ask for it to be held outside of normal
school hours so their parents would be able to sit in on the presentation so they are
able to get the same information. There is one major barrier the I need to consider
while developing ways to promote the YMCA programs. That barrier is
communication. While most of the people who live in Toronto speak either English
or French, immigrants also in the Greater
Poem Vs Short Story
The essential difference between a poem and a short story is the difference of scope.
So, poems are short and they, briefly, tell you how the author is feeling about in a few
words, while short stories could be written by the author at any moment with a plot,
themes, character development, setting etc.
The play Naked Lunch by Michael Hollinger is about a man named Vernon and a
female named Lucy. They used to be a couple but they are no longer together.
When they were sitting down to eat, Vernon started asking her the reasons of why
she did not want to eat steak. He was making a big problem of it. Vernon finally
ends up making Lucy eat the steak by yelling at her. Consequently, she ate the steak
because she was scared.
A play can be long or short, it all depends on what the author wants to transmit to his
or her audience. The time is essentially important. In a play the characters need to talk
each other to have an act; on the other hand, in short stories the narrator explains the
situation, he is the one making and telling us the story.
Most good stories start with a fundamental characteristics: the initial situation, the
conflict, the climax, suspense, and conclusion. In Girl by Jamaica Kincaid, the story
does not seems to be real since it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A short story has characters, a main idea (the plot), the conflict of the story. They
both have an emotional respond from the reader. In I could not stop for Death by
Emily Dickinson, the author gives us a clue of what the poem will be about at the
beginning. This makes it easier to understand; how the author begins it differences
him from others. As in Naked Lunch by Michael Hollinger; I honestly thought that
this couple would get back together since they were having diner, but eventually it
ended up in an unexpected way. It was not the ending I expected honestly. Dickinson
in the poetry focuses too much on death. It tells us that death can come to us when
you least expect
A Good Man Is Hard To Find Essay examples
Flannery O Connor s short story collection A Good Man is Hard to Find has many
elements of a southern gothic work. Images of ancient castles with sliding panels
create suspicious themes and settings that lead the readers into the dark and gloomy
world of the southern United States. With all of the violence, horror, and dismal
surroundingspresented in O Connors stories there is too a moral messagegiven. Later
gothic work did not always explain horror like this, holding little moral value to

Could this be forewarning to the grandmother s confused values of what is right or
wrong (good or bad)?
Soon the family is on their way again but the grandmother forces her way by using
the children. Getting the kids exited enough to annoy their father so much that he
breaks down and changes the route and seeks out the old gothic house. We soon
learn that the grandmother has made a geographical mistake thinking Georgia for
Tennessee. Her ignorance starts a chain of events which will result in all their
deaths: Brining the cat along even though she knew it wold not be allowed, forcing
her will even when unsure if it was right (O Connor, 2, 11). The grandmother s
uncertainty of geography could be read as mirroring her spiritual uncertainty.
After the car crashes we see that the grandmother is self serving. She uses gender
roles ( quot;you wouldn t shoot a woman quot;) and religious images to try and
save herself and to make the Misfit to look well upon her (O Connor, 14 19). This
plea seems very self serving. Why not ask quot;you wouldn t shoot a family, would
you? quot; The argument of religion as a reason to be good is rejected by the Misfit
(O Connor, 21). By dismissing Christ s history the Misfit also rejects the
grandmother s self serving values.
The American Ginseng Plant
Author ID: 5234Word count: 706
Proposed species: American GinsengProposed action: Protecting
Facts Another name for American Ginseng is Panax quinquefolius. It was used by
Native Americans. They were also an early American trade to China. And often prized
for its medicinal qualities. American ginseng are harvested and sold internationally.
They were abundant inthe early days, but unfortunately they dramatically declined in
today s world.
Description
American ginseng a slow growing plant. They were found within eastern deciduous
forests of North America. Its life cycle begins as a seedling with single compound
leaf(prong) and takes 3 8 years to produce a single cluster of flower. Then the flower
can either fertilized itself or cross pollinate with another plant. There are two main
pollinators of ginseng are the syrphid flies and the halictid bees. Plants that are
pollinated have greater seed production. Right after pollination, berries will start to
grow and each berry contain 1 3 seeds.
Why There is a Decrease in American Ginseng
Habitat loss: logging, agriculture, mountaintop mining and development
Over harvest or poor harvesting: harvesting non reproductive plants or without ripe
fruits
Consumption by white tailed deer: white tailed deer often eat large, reproductive
plants before they can produce seeds
Invasive species: out compete American ginseng for limited resources and some will
change the soil environment making it unsuitable for

Amish Family Legacy
In watching the video, The Amish A Family Legacy I learned a vast amount of
information about the Amish community. The Amish group of people live a more
traditional lifestyle of past generations. The Amish lifestyle could be compared to
the lifestyle of people who lived between the 1800 s and 1900 s prior to the Industrial
revolution. The Amishdo not partake in the uses of modern technology. For instance,
their means of transportation are horses and walking. Our current means of
transportation are cars, motorcycles, buses, trains, etc. Another instance is that the
Amish still practice agricultural farming with little no involvement of machinery.
They also refuse to use chemicals refuse to use chemicals such as pesticides as we do
to repel bugs from our crops. The Amish feel that our two different worlds should be
isolated and distant from one another to keep their traditional way of life away from
the modern world. The secluded community known as the Amish avoid contact with
the outside word of their community. This leads to having their community limited in
the means of communication to only each other. By limiting their means of contact
with others, the Amish limit themselves to only one social circle. This also limits
them in possibly picking their spouse to only be from the Amish within their own
community. Scientifically speaking, the Amish do have ancestry that are easily seen
from all the past generations because of this. Their population would grow

The work of communication theorist and professor, Stuart Hall, confirms that
meanings are not inherently in people; rather they are derived from external sources,
one primary source being the mass media to which we are repeatedly exposed; in our

democratic pluralism the pretense that society is held together by common norms,
including equal opportunity, respect for diversity, individual rights.. (Griffin 2000).

Sexuality In Media Analysis
Sexualization of females has always been a problem. Many of the commercials
from the 60 s to the 2000 s depict women as nothing more than sexual beings to sell
a product. We often see commercials that deal nothing with the topic of sex use it as
a means of a way to sell products. In my presentation I used two videos one with
Paris HIlton and the other with Scarlett Johannson. They each are advertising two
well known companies one fast food restaurant and the other a well known

Ekphrasis In Dorian Gray
The Picture of Dorian Gray employs another example of ekphrasis. The portrait in
the novel is more than just a painting. It is also a physical manifestation of Dorian
Gray s soul. This is its own form of ekphrasis: the portrait is describing his morality.
It is achieving the effects that Dorian s physical form cannot. This adds yet another
layer of complexity; a soulis being described by a painting, which is in turn being
described to the reader. A solid object shows us in simplified terms state of Dorian
s moral consciousness. At first, it only has a touch of cruelty in the mouth (Wilde
65). Each time he views it, it becomes worse, until it is just a hideous face on the
canvas grinning at him (Wilde 154) It is a ledger upon which all his sins are
recorded, piling one on top of the other until its renders the figure unrecognizable.
Instead of simply describing the internalization of sin, Wilde creates a visual
representation of its effects on the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems to be his defining characteristic to all that interact with him. Wilde included
this aspect for a specific reason. Aestheticism was an up and coming movement
during Oscar Wilde s time. It rejected the Victorian notion that art was supposed to
have a moral purpose. Instead, aestheticism said that art should be enjoyed purely
for its beauty, and should not contain any purpose or meaning given by the artist
(Quintus 559). Wilde was a strong proponent of this movement, and he
incorporated many of its themes into his work. In the preface of The Portrait of
Dorian Gray, Wilde starkly outlines his beliefs about art in a series of epigrams,
saying, the artist is the creator of beautiful things. To reveal art and conceal the artist
is art s aim (Wilde 2). Wilde clearly demonstrates his alignment with aestheticism and
the appreciation of beauty. Not only does he personally hold these beliefs, but his

The Importance Of Communication In Business
Communication
In business communication is key. All successful relationships are built through
communication, trust, loyalty and respect are built through good communication. So,
it is no surprise that the Administrative Management Society found that 80% of
managers rated communication as the most important skill of perspective employees.
Another study conducted by a college placement service found that hundreds of
college alumni believe that communication abilities were more important to their job
success than their actual majors. Most people tend to focus on the verbal portion of
communication, often forgetting about the non verbal portion. Research shows when
non verbal cues contradict verbal ones, people tend to believe the non verbal behavior
especially when it comes to feelings and attitude. With advancements in technology
the world has become smaller which has increased the amount of cross cultural
communication, especially in business. Not all cultures have the same
communication styles, so it is imperative to understand cultural differences in order
to have successful international relationships. This memo will specifically focus on
the differences and similarities in communication styles, specifically non verbal,
between the United Statesof America and Colombia.

Abuse of Animals in the Circus
Abuse of Animals in the Circus Since the beginning of the modern day circus in the
early 20th century millions of Americans have enjoyed the performances by both the
people and the animals that perform for our entertainment. However, the audience is
blinded by shock and awe of the show from what really happens behind the curtain.
Animal cruelty, poor living conditions, and lack of legal regulation scars the animals
and becomes very dangerous to the overall health of the animals and those who are
around them. The mistreatment of animals in circuseshas been occurring for far too
long, and new laws need to be implemented in an effort to prevent future acts of

Many circus animals become dysfunctional, unhealthy, depressed, and aggressive as a
result of unnatural and unrelenting confinement in which they are kept and treated.
When these elephants have their babies taken away, that life long relationship is
abruptly terminated and every moment, every natural instinct, and every natural
behavior is subject to discipline. (LCA). There are many organizations that not only
help these precious creatures receive the care and treatment they deserve but also
protect the animals who are already free remain that way. There are many
organizations nowadays that fight for animal rights, such as; Born Free USA, Last
Chance for Animals (LCA), PAWS, and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals. Awareness is key, without these organizations these animals would have
no chance. We are their voice of reason, their protector, and their scapegoat. The
number of members grows each year, PETA is one of the largest member and
supporter based organization in the world with well over three million active
members to date. However, these organizations would be nothing without us, the
people. These organizations help raise awareness for these animals by doing all sorts
of things ranging from fundraisers to help collect money to having guest speakers
come and talk to the community about what they can do to help. Needless to say this
grabs the attention of the press from time to time. There are

A Brief Note On The World Wide Web
The world wide web has a wide range of uses. From finding resources for research
papers to diagnosing diseases by Googling symptoms, the spectrum of its utility is
endless. While the web might be a great platform to find information, not all of the
information out there is credible and thus using the internet in place of a doctor is
not acceptable and needs to stop, or at least be carried out warily.
It is understandable why one would prefer a quick Google search over a trip to the
doctor s office. The increasing cost of healthcare factors into why people prefer to
look for answers for their medical issues over the Internet. Healthcare can not only be
expensive, but also stressful. Making an appointment, driving down to the hospital, ...

The first and foremost issue with resorting to the world wide web for answers to
questions relating to medicine is that a lot of the medical information available on the

Most of the websites have false, unproven, biased information that could cause some
serious consequences if assumed to be true. Some websites go to the extent of

Why did Homeworld never return to reclaim earth and why does Yellow Diamond
now openly refuse to entertain the idea of a possible earth colony?

My Aunt Julie Is One Of The Most Amazing, Sweet, And...
My aunt Julie is one of the most amazing, sweet, and hilarious people I have ever met.
She has the most beautiful and kind soul. She was also born with a severe mental
and physical handicap called Cerebral Palsy. It is a condition that occurs when the
brain hasn t completely developed at birth, in Julie s case she was born
prematurely and was also a twin, making her even smaller and more frail at birth.
Julie was born not breathing and the doctors couldn t get her to start breathing for
5 minutes after she was born. She is now in her early fifties, but only has the
mental capability of a 78 year old child. She has been in a wheelchair for her whole
life and never even taken one step, she also has very minimal control of her arms
and hands. Julie also has a very hard time controlling her temper and her emotions,
I can only assume that it is because she feels as though she is trapped in her own
body and will never be able to get out of it and feel free.
Julie has this crazy love for Nascar and has never missed watching a race. Everyone
has their little obsessions, for my six year old nephew it is toy cars, my older brother
it is playing the guitar, for me it is Cadbury Eggs, but for Julie it is Nascar races and

Questions (6):
1) What are some similarities and differences between the Renaissance and the
Middle Ages that are mentioned in this section of the text?
One major similarity between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is the lack of
Classical Culture, characterized by darkness that caused the Middle Ages. Although
the Renaissance was known as a rebirth , later historians explained that the rebirth of
Greco Roman society in Italy had no Classical culture in it, which is why both the
Renaissance and the Middle Ages are known as the dark age. Despite the fact that
scholars do not believe that the Renaissance represented an abrupt or affecting break
within the Middle Ages, there was still much stability in economic, political, and civil
life. Italy, in both the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, was mostly an urban society,
as an outcome of its commercial supremacy and the enlargement of its political
system. Both time periods preserved ancient Latin culture, with the Renaissance re
discovering the ancient Latin principles that were neglected at the end of the Middle
Ages.
2) What harmed Italian trade and what factors allowed Italy to recover economically?

Abstract
This research aims at emphasizing the use of literature as a popular technique for
teaching both basic language skills (i.e. reading, writing, speaking and listening)and
language areas(i.e. vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation) in our times. Reasons for
using literary text in a foreign language classroom, suitable situations for teaching
literature and main criteria for selecting suitable literary texts in foreign language
classes are stressed so as to be familiar with the underlying reasons, situations and
criteria for language teachers using and selecting a literary text. Furthermore,

Such texts help students develop strategies and create conditions for successful
learning of all language skills. Not only that, they can facilitate in perceptive students
the acquisition of sense making procedures and sensitize them to all kinds of lexical,
structural, formal, stylistic, symbolic, pragmatic, semiotic and conventional aspects
which are in a dynamic interplay to form a literary text. This will naturally lead them
to learn how a text is formed. Also as a metalinguistic discourse, a literary text
illustrates textual skills like cohesion, coherence, reference, inference and provides
examples of deixis, implicature, presupppositon and speech acts.
Collie and Slater (1987: 3 6) support the inclusion of literature in the language
classroom as it provides valuable authentic material, develops personal involvement
and help contribute to readers cultural as well as language enrichment. These
advantages, they move on to assert, can be achieved provided teachers use relevant
and appealing material to learners through the use of activities that promote
involvement, reader response and a solid integration between language and literature.

My Favorite Poems On The Theme Of Poetry
Together with four classmates in my English class, I created an anthology of five
poems on the theme of Death. The authors of these poems are Alan Seeger, Emily
Dickinson, Henry Scott Holland, Pablo Neruda, and Sylvia Plath. My favorite poem
is Death is nothing at all and my favorite authors are Emily Dickinson and Sylvia
Plath.
While going over the poems and learning about the poets, my favorite poem is Death
is not all by Henry Scott Holland. This poem caught my attention because it evokes
my thinking. What this poem is trying to say is that even when you die; your soul
stays alive. One of my favorite lines in this poem is Nothing is past; nothing is lost.

Other work that I enjoy from Emily is Success is Counted Sweetest ; this poem talks
about not knowing what you have until it is gone, and not appreciating the things
you have. I enjoy this poem because it is true. It tends to be that those who struggle
more to get what they want, tend to appreciate it more than those who get everything
easy. Not everyone appreciates success all the way because once they have the
success they lose the ability to care. I think that when you struggle and go through
rough paths you appreciate more because you will always remember those tough
times you had to go through to be successful.
Another one of my favorite authors in this Anthology was Sylvia Plath. I thought it
was amazing how interested she was in writing, and how she started off with just a
journal. Something admirable about Sylvia is that even though her relationship wasn
t great because of personal problems with her husband; she was still able to publish
her first poetry collection, and have her first child. Even though her relationship was
falling apart, she was still able to welcome her second child. What is even more
amazing to me is that even after her husband left her for another woman. She was
going through depression and mental illness, she was able to publish her only novel
(The Bell Jar.) It is astonishing to see how she was able to talk about her life
experiences while dealing with a mental
Greek Theater And Its Impact On The City State Of Athens
When considering ancient Greek life, theater was massively important. This is
apparent by the Theater of Dionysius placement in the city state of Athens, with its
close proximity to the Acropolis and the Parthenon. The Acropolis by definition
meant the high point of the city state, and was on a plateau. Its raised status
highlights its importance, thus radiating that importance onto nearby structures as
well. Although the Greeks valued rational and reason, they also valued their
emotional side as well. All plays were dedicated to the god of emotion Dionysius.
Much of what we know of the comedic aspects of Hellenic Greek theater productions
comes from the plays of the playwright Aristophanes. Aristophanes plays express to

Compared to the way Athenian women were presented in Lysistrata, Aristophanes
sticks to the now known facts of their lifestyle fairly closely. In the play s opening,
Lysistrata, our female protagonist, calls women from not only her home of Athens,
but as we all the Spartan enemy and other places to meet in and is upset at their
untimely arrival. Her neighbor Calonice appears and reassures her they will come
eventually, but they are simply delayed due to having to care for their husbands,
household, and children. In contrast, Spartan women were educated, participated
in sports, and had little to do with the upbringing of their children. In fact, they
only had contact with their husbands for sexual relation purposes. When the
women finally arrive, Lysistrata inquires how many of their husbands are gone
away to war. Some of the women reply their husbands have been gone for months.
Lampito, a beautiful Spartan girl, expresses she is unhappy because her husband
comes home and no sooner grabs his shield and chargers off again. Though
according to our textbook, Spartan women were free to remarry if her husband was
gone away to war for too long. Thus begins the flaws in Lysistrata s plan of how the
women will force the men to claim peace. On the home front, war had a massive
effect on the women and children left behind by

In the Intertidal Zone
In the Intertidal Zone
Ever wonder what fascinating creatures there are in the Intertidal zone? Or what
kinds of adaptations they use? Almost all plants that are algae live in this
incredible zone. Some other names for this amazing zone are the High Tide Zone,
Mid Tide Zone, and Low Tide Zone. The Intertidal Zone is also called the shallow
ocean zone, and has a lot of tide pools. This zone stretches from the surface to 660
feet, and you can find jellyfish, crabs, fish, and sea turtles. Adaptations are a species
ability to change to its surrounding to survive. Even though it is hard living in the
harsh, Intertidal Zone, there are three amazing organisms that survive these
conditions using cool adaptations, and they are the purple sea urchin, the starfish, and
the jellyfish.
Although there are many fascinating animals that can call the Intertidal Zone home,
the starfish, or sea star, is one that really stands out. To begin, National Geographic
reports, most sea stars also have the remarkable ability to consume prey outside
their bodies. Using tiny, suction cupped tube feet, they pry open clams or oysters,
and their sack like cardiac stomach emerges from their mouth and oozes inside the
shell. Swimming in the ocean, the stomach then envelops the prey to digest it, and
finally withdraws back into the body. Because the starfish needs many ways to eat
while in the Intertidal Zone, this is one example of a way that they can find food,
because food is hard to find in the

When figuring out the costs for revenues you need to figure out how much the
network will earn from all the scans done throughout the five year period. When
configuring revenue associated with scans you need to look for total payments which
are nineteen thousand and six hundred and ninety then multiple total payments by
fifty weeks. This equals out to nine hundred and eighty four thousand and five
hundred annually, then multiple the annual revenue by five years. The total scan
revenue for five years comes out to four million and nine hundred and twenty two
thousand and five hundred dollars. The next amount added to the revenues for the
physician s network is the amount the MRI machine can be salvaged for which are
seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The next equation to configure is the total
revenue costs. How you configure the total revenue costs is by adding the total scan
revenues and the salvage costs, which equals out to five million and six hundred and
seventy two thousand and five hundred dollars. The final equation is to figure out the
net revenues of the MRI machine and that is to take the total revenues and subtract
the total expenses for five years. The total revenue is five million and six hundred and
seventy two thousand and five hundred and you then subtract the total expenses,
which is

Church of the Holy Sepulchre The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem,
Israel, was first constructed in 330 AD, recalls respect to the holy site where Jesus,
son of God , was crucified and buried to atone for the sins of mankind. After multiple
destructions and attacks of the church, specifically by the persians in AD 614, and
the Egyptians in 1009, The Crusaders rebuilt most of what is standing of the church
today, including a rocky outcropping where the cross was originally placed. Inside
the church is also what is called The Edicule, a cave like structure preserving Christ s

The wall was originally one of four built by Herod the Great to support the square

Relapse Treatment Model
Drug abuse and relapse prevention hold a substantial significance within society. This
paper will discuss one individual s journey towards needing treatment. It is important
to note the history of this individual due to it being a large part of who she is today.
The information gathered is momentous in her treatment model which will be
illustrated in the latter.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has assisted therapists in using in session
behavior as clinically significant towards behavior change. CBT will assess our
thoughts and behaviors which are important to designate triggers and assist in relapse
prevention (Futterman, R. et al., 2005). Relapse prevention is comprised of seven
strategic groups: psychoeducation, identification of high risk situations, coping skills,
life style behaviors, self efficacy, dealing with relapse, and drug monitoring (Rawson,
R. A., et al., 1995). Psychoeducation is comprised of addiction related topics with
central issues revolving around addiction, brain chemistry, cues and cravings,
addiction and family, a need for change, and comorbidity. This is typically taught in a
class room or in a group discussion and may be further integrated during individual
therapy sessions. Identifying high risk situations include identifying risk conditions
(i.e. type of day, type of company, location, having money, boredom), behavioral
warnings (i.e. compulsivity and impulsivity, stopping recovery, secondary drug use),
cognitive warnings (i.e. recalling euphoric feelings, justification of drug use, drug
dreams), and affective warnings (i.e. excitement and celebration, or depression and
anger emotion previously associated with drug use). Through homework, individual
therapy and group discussion clients are able to learn their own conditions associated
with drug use (Rawson, R. A., et al.,
A Brief Note On Criminology And Police Service
In 2010 the newly elected Coalition Government brought with it a dramatic and
wide ranging financial restrictions which affected all areas of the public sector. One
area which criminology and police knowledge is interested in are those that have
effected the Home Office and therefore the police service. The restrictions have had
a far reaching effect to many areas of the policeservice, which will be highlighted at
the beginning of the essay, however it will be concentrating on the specific aspect
of the fearful reductions in PCSOs and neighbourhood policing and how that will
effect 21st century policing. The essay will start by giving a brief summary of the
cuts which have occurred since 2010. This will naturally lead onto a brief summary
of the job of a PCSO and how they link in with Neighbourhood Policing, whilst
assessing the benefits of them. It will then flow onto the possible effects which could
happen to not only the police force but also to the public if the financial restrictions
continue to occur.
The 2010 government spending review implemented a programme of expenditure
cuts that would reduce police funding by 20 percent in the four years from March
2011 to March 2015 (Rowe, 2013). In order to deal with these financial restrictions,
the police have had to reconfigure provisions, for example closing small area
stations and sharing specialist services with neighbouring police forces (O Neill,
2014). Inevitably, the restricted financial aid has also caused a lot of
When I Came To Diversity Essay
I always thought that I was an expert when it came to diversity. My mom is from
the tropical islands of the Philippines while my dad is from the landlocked Czech
Republic. I have yet to meet a part Filipina, part Czech, part American I must qualify
as some kind of international hybrid and therefore embody the very definition of
diversity. Right?
Not exactly.
To say I experienced culture shock when, smack in the middle of my junior year, my
dad s job moved us to Paris, is an understatement. Suddenly, Memphis Beale Street
was replaced by the Champs ElysГ©es, and the Memphis pyramid, home of the Bass
Pro Shop megastore, turned into the Arc de Triomphe.
Yet even in this unfamiliar environment, I assumed I would feel at home at my
international school because I, of course, knew everything there was to know about
diversity. The American School of Paris (my new school) has students... Show more

I watched as sushi was traded for samosas, and found myself seeking out the
familiarity of like minded Americans who, like me, were eating peanut butter and
jelly sandwiches. Yet with only a handful of students who came from a typical
American public school, there were few PB Js in sight. At this moment, I realized my
ignorance.
Although I had anticipated a departure from the fairly homogenous crowd at my
former school, I expected to find a new crowd of individuals just like me a diverse
background but an Americanized spirit. This was not the case.
I knew, however, I could not stand by with my old mindset and let this sea of
diversity overwhelm me. My determination to embrace true diversity has enabled
me to build a number of meaningful relationships that have expanded my
worldview. My friends at the American School of Paris (ASP) and I constantly
contrast our experiences and upbringings. From how the school system works in
Germany to what parties are like in Sri Lanka, we have discussed it
Clara Barton Accomplishments
Clara Barton, born Clarissa Harlowe Barton, is one of the most significant figures
in US history. Barton is well known for being a female pioneer in the field of
teaching, as well as for her work in the US patent office during the Civil war. These
feats alone make her a historical figure; however, she is also known for something
which far surpasses these accomplishments. Clara Bartonis recognized and
remembered today for her extraordinary work as a nurse during the American Civil
War, and for going on to establish the American Red Cross. (Clara Barton; Clara

TITLE
BLANK
Summary
Sentinal Fire Protection Ltd (SFP) is a company that design and specialises in the
design and manufacture of fire detection and extinguishing systems for aircrafts. SFP
have been tasked with carrying out tests on a new fire extinguishant named Agent H3.
Due to the findings conducted in 1994 as per the Montreal Protocol (a protocol to the
Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer), the commonly used fire
extinguishing agent Halon 1301 ceased production. Halon 1301 is a CFC
(chlorofluorocarbon) gas, which the Montreal Protocol concluded, had a tendency to
significantly breakdown the earths ozone layer. The termination of Halon 1301
prompted the need for a CFC free replacement fire extinguishing agent.
The replacement extinguishant, Agent H3 was tested by SFP under controlled
conditions which simulated a bulk load cargo fire inside a compartment with a
volume of 58m3. The effectiveness of Agent H3 was constantly monitored through
thermocouples and data loggers. It s efficiency as a fire suppressant was based on
two criterion set by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), the temperature
acceptance criterion and the maximum time/temp criterion, with the outcome of a
lower result being more effective. These results would then be compared with the
known results of Halon 1301 being subjected to the same tests.
The results concluded that Agent H3

Vasovagal Syncope, also known as fainting, neurocardiogenic syncope, and neurally
mediated syncope, is a very common condition, occurring in roughly half of all
people at least once within their life; three percent of the population develops it
repeatedly. It is not a serious condition.(2) A vasovagal response involves a decrease
in the volume of blood that is returned to the heart, which enervates the
baroreceptors(2) in the sympathetic nervous system to increase the force of each
contraction of the heart. Consequently, the opposing parasympathetic nervous system
is alerted to slow the heart rate and dilate the surrounding veins and arteries. These
responses of the nervous system cause the blood pressure to drop very low, causing
syncope (loss of consciousness).(1) Most patients are young and healthy, although
vasovagal syncope can occur in the elderly population that has preexisting cardiac
problems. Extremely hot weather and blood alcohol levels are typical triggers. Some
patients suffer from several, often attacks, while others may only experience them
sporadically.(3)
While standing, the blood tends to settle in the legs.

This paper examines the Dinosaurs of the Jurassic Period. The paper considers the
holistic view of the Jurassic period in addition to the Dinosaurs that roamed the Earth
during this period. Finally, historical consideration evidence leading to the demise or
disappearance of the dinosaurs. Analysis is based upon research conducted from ten

Thus, oceans engulfed the areas in between, raising the mountains on the seafloor,
which raised sea levels higher, flowing onto the continents (Unknown, n.d.). Hence,
the climate changed accordingly; for example, they may have experienced strong
seasonal contrasts of temperature within large continental areas as well as some
polar ice. Monsoonal effects were dominant on the continents and rainfall in low and
mid latitudes was probably strongly seasonal, with arid conditions prevailing at low
latitudes (Hallam, 1993). In the late Jurassic, scientists noted a considerable spread of
aridity in southern Eurasia and attributed this to orographic effects (Hallam, 1993).
Although there are no concrete conclusions regarding the climate during the Jurassic
times, we do know that the forests flourished and the dinosaurs grew larger than ever
before.
Research has shown the flora distributions of the Jurassic period indicate a wide
array of ferns, ginkgoes, conifers, bennettitaleans and cycads, many of which still
exist today (Palmer, 2002). In the Jurassic life, the conifers were the most
variegated of the large trees, and among those were the ginkgos. Ginkoes carpeted
the mid to high northern latitudes, and podocarps, a type of conifer, were
particularly successful south of the Equator (Unknown, n.d.). The ostensibly palm
like cyads were very diverse and abundant; so much so that the Jurassic period could
also be referred to as the Age of the Cycads
Trade Union
TRADE UNIONISM, COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AND NATION BUILDING:
THE NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE Charles N. Okolie Introduction It is a well known
fact that the growth and development of any nation depends on the structures it has
carved out for itself. In Nigeria, amidst the various arms of the government which
has been working tirelessly to ensure the growth and sustenance of the Nigerian
state is the emergence of trade unions. The colonial influence in Nigeria has left
much to be desired. The emergence of these trade unions has become a desired form
of association in order to restore the dignity of professional workers and more so

The first organization that is known to have had an interest in trade union
activities was the mechanics mutual aid provident and mutual improvement

was more concerned with efficiency in the civil service and intensified
nationalization of the service than with hard core trade unionism. Some other ones
138 Charles N. Okolie includes the railway workers union and the Nigerian union
of teachers. Those who formed the railway workers union were dissenters from the
civil service union. The reason for this break away of the railway workers to form
the workers union was because they believed that the civil service union was too
soft spoken on fundamental issues and more so, the civil service union was not
responsive to the economic dictates of the period. More so because the new unions
were made up of skilled workers or artisans in various trade, they were placed on a
strategic position and so a strike by them could paralyse the economy. As an
offspring of this association of skilled workers, the NUT was formed. The reason for
the formation was that the teachers were dissatisfied over conditions of employment.
The African leaders were not happy that the working conditions in the mission
schools were poorer than those of their contemporaries in the government owned
Benefits Of Water Supply On Earth
Limited amount of water supply on Earth will lead to negative effects. The
depletion of our water resource is more serious than that of our current oil
depletion. There are substitutes for oil but nothing can replace our drinking water.
We are in a generation where people believe that water is a reusable resource that
we will never run out of. But in the future, it is bound to not be able to keep up
with us. Global conflict will happen over this natural resource if nothing is done.
Food production will not be able to keep up with the speeding population increase,
and our overall economy will suffer. Due to the limited amount of fresh water in
this world, and the demand going up due to populations, many people of the world
are suffering or will be suffering. Before I talk about the issues of having a lack of
fresh water I must talk about how water is becoming scarce and if we don t start
preserving it, we may have a serious epidemic in our future. Also, people in certain
locations end up in poverty because of the lack of fresh water in their area. Water is a
human right and every person deserves access to it. The location of where you are
living plays a big role in if you are being effective by the water crisis. Many people in
other countries are struggling due to limited fresh water reservoirs, access to ground
water, and such. Poor countries such as Africa have poor access to ground water due
to money. But countries such as China may not struggle as much. Wells dug

The Army should create multicomponent units as Infantry rather than Armored BCTs.
Reserve Component infantry formations should be able to achieve proficiency at
collective training tasks much more easily than armored formations that must
perform complex mounted maneuvers and routine gunnery exercises. Infantry based
formations have the added benefit of being much easier to resource with training
facilities and will require less full time support to maintain vehicles. (3) Incorporation
of the National Guard requires legislative action. In order to avoid a potentially
difficult and lengthy fight to change existing laws, the Army could create
multicomponent BCTs composed of Active Duty and Army Reserve formations only.
This force mix would achieve some of the advantages of a hybrid BCT without the
need to change existing authorities. A capability swap with the National Guard may
be required to create combat arms formations in the Army Reserve but can be
accomplished without the need to change existing
Effects Of Alcoholism On The American Medical Association
Assignment: Literature review
Topic: Addiction to alcohol
Instructor: Vanda Wark
Literature Review
Definition of alcoholism: According to the American medical association alcoholism
is a chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial and environmental factors influencing
development and manifestations.
Alcoholism has had a tremendous impact on the human condition and its relationship
to society.
The evolution of alcoholism, its behavior and quality of life impact will be
addressed; as well as treatments and fiscal impact in the literature review.
Alcoholism is a complex disorder with many pathways leading to its development.
Genetic and other biological factors are likely involved in the emergence of alcohol
dependence, along with cognitive, behavioral, temperament, psychological, and
sociocultural factors. Alcohol use patterns, including alcohol abuse and alcohol
dependence, are familial in nature (cf. Heath et al.,
1997; cf. Kendler, Heath, Neale, Kessler, Eaves, 1992; Hesselbrock, 1995). That is,
similar styles of alcohol use and the presence of alcoholism are often found within the
same family, running from parent to child and across multiple generations of
biologically related individuals.
However, many other traits or behaviors, such as religious or political affiliation,
which have little or no biological basis and, therefore, cannot be under heavy genetic
control, also run in families. While genetic and other biological factors cannot fully
Couples Therapy Case Study
2. Seeing couples individually during couples therapy is viewed differently in
various models of couples therapy. What are some of the reasons given in support of
individual sessions(s) with members of a couple?
Although various models for couples therapy differ on the means and approach to
individual sessions, they do share a common core of themes regarding the utility and
practicality of individual sessions as a component of couples therapy. These
commonalities include assessing and ensuring safety, skill building, information
gathering, and building therapeutic alliances.
Couples therapy is often an emotionally charged process. Therapists, therefore, must
be conscious of the risk of domestic violence and its varying forms not limited to
physical violence, but also in consideration of emotional abuse which can also disrupt
a treatment process. Engaging in couples therapy while there is active aggression or
violence places the victim at eminent risk of greater harm and exploitation. The
dynamic of relationships that involve domestic violence is often enmeshed, insidious,
and seldomly extinguish themselves. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bowen discovered using Systems Theory that individual sessions or individual
coaching within conjoint sessions enabled partners to focus less on their maladaptive
exchanges and more on their individual clinical needs (e.g family of origin issues).
During split session work, couples experienced less distractions and interference with
one another, talked more calmly with the therapist (Bowen), and ultimately their
relationships with one another improved due to their opportunity to actively listen to
the work and needs of their
BINGO Board Game Analysis
The objective of the first interactive learning activity is to promote a deeper
understanding of the core tenets of the Constitution. This can be accomplished by
playing a BINGO board game. The prepared BINGO cards will contain a total of
twenty five squares with five rows going across and five rows going down. Three
BINGO cards will be distributed to parents containing the key tenets written on the
inside of each of the squares. Some of the tenets will be duplicated inside the squares
while other squares will contain a blank space. The parents will also receive a small
packet of colored chips to use as a marker for the squares.
A list of questions regarding each of the core tenets will begin the BINGO game. The
speaker will read one question relating to the core tenets. Parents will raise his or
her hand to answer the question. The presenter will continue to call on parents until
a correct response has been given. The parents will place a colored chip on the
square if the correct answer is written inside the square. There will be more

  • 2. Analysis Of Theodore Roethke Root Cellar In Theodore Roethke Root Cellar , there is a heavy use of vivid and stylistic imagery. In the first line, the speaker states, Nothing would sleep in that cellar, dank as a ditch. We are given that something is refusing to sleep that is, to die and at the same time being dank gets us thinking about things that are undead . In line two, the speaker states, Bulbs broke out of boxes hunting for chinks in the dark. This tells us that things are still growing and they are looking for the light. In the next following line the speaker mentions, Shoots dangled and dropped (3). This gives us the image of the shoots coming out of the bulbs. The shoots dangle and droop towards whatever light possible. In line four, the speaker gives us an idea of the type of housing they are in, mildewed crates. The moisture creates mold and mildew. It also creates prettier life like plants. As you can see, mold and mildew are life, and they grow alongside the plants. In line six, the speaker brings us a smell by saying congress. Roethke must mean just the coming together or gathering of smells. In line seven, the speaker give us another sense of smell, Roots ripe as old bait, pulpy stems, rank, silo rich, leaf mold, manure, lime, piled against slippery planks. He gives us this image and the sense of smell of mold and rot to show it is still life. These words for example would be ripe, pulpy, rank, and rich. The last two lines, Nothing would give up life: Even the dirt kept breathing
  • 3. Straight Edge Movement The main topic of this article is punk culture, but specifically a subset of hardcore punk culture called Straight Edge. The article traces the evolution of the Straight Edge movement from the 1980 s 2000 s. This author argues that the Straight Edge movement evolved to become a lifestyle and an ideology. In short, the author argues that as the Straight Edge movement evolved, the original ideology associated with the movement shifted in the opposite direction due in part to the changing demographic of the Straight Edge movement. The author s primary sources include interviews and testimonials from individuals that were part of the movement, usually taken from magazines or books about the Straight Edge movement. In order to establish what the Straight Edge movement was all about, this author also looks at the actual Hardline Manifesto from which the Straight Edge movement branched off of, but she also uses CD s from bands like Minor Threat to track the musical changes that were taking place in the movement as well. Unlike other articles, this author uses academic books about... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though the movement started out with promoting abstinence and veganism, the ambiguity of the associated ideology and the changing demographics of the culture have distorted the original values of the movement. Furthermore, this contribution also reveals the dangers of making societal values a center of a movement, especially since the dominant demographic of the movement can change what the values of the movement itself. In order to attract people to a movement, the values of a movement have to allow for a certain ambiguity, but that ambiguity can be twisted and stretched based on the demographic and that brings up real life implications, especially when it comes to enacting the movement s

The importance of that approval from the Ways and Means Committee can t be understated because many Congressmen blindly accepted their recommendations. Otherwise, they were completely unfamiliar with marijuana. The bill came up for vote in the House at the end of a Friday session with many House members having already left for the weekend. Rep. Snell from New York requested that the vote take place at another time. I don t know anything about the bill. The Marihuana Tax Act passed through the Senate just as easily. Senate leaders brushed off thorough testimony from hemp farmers who warned that the bill would end their business. They lobbied for an exemption for hemp from the bill. One of those of those hemp farmers, Matt Rens, grew quite frustrated with the proceedings: Matt Rens: The real purpose of this bill is not to raise money, is it? Senator Brown: Well, we are sticking to the proposition that it is. Matt Rens: It will cost a million (jobs). Senator Brown: We thank you, Mr. Rens. (dismissed) The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 didn t actually ban marijuana. Like the Harrison Act, it effectively taxed marijuana into the shadows of the black market. Marijuana had sold for about $1 an ounce at the time, but the bill added a tax of $100 an ounce. The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 effectively taxed and regulated the hemp industry out of business. The reporting and registration requirements alone brought operations for hemp manufacturers to a standstill. The Bureau of Narcotics received many letters from the hemp industry requesting leniency. One letter, just months after the bill passed, from H.W. Bellrose on October 12, 1937 promised that a re birth of the industry was imminent because of the capacity of his World

They based their study off of the Hamilton model of social behaviour and its evolution, this models states that an individual is able to aid in their own fitness through the general fitness of the population, this occurs when an individual is less aggressive and attempts to support it s relatives. As well it was found that individuals that are related to one another tend to be closely associated. When looking at the Atlantic salmon it was discovered that they use a chemical to recognize and aggregate with their kin. Many laboratory tests were conducted similar to the one Griffiths and Armstrong ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main results found in this experiment can be summed up in the 4 figures provided. Figure 1 looks at the time spent in each feeding area by the Atlantic salmon. It shows that a large portion of time was spent in patch two (which was the area in which most of the food was supplied). It also shows that there was a significant difference in the interactions between related and unrelated fish (higher for related species). Figure 2 analyzes the amount of food consumed by the larger more dominant fish. It showed that the amount of food that was ingested varied considerably by the dominance of each fish, this value also increased as the experiment continued. It was also noted that the fish that were related seemed to evenly distribute the food among them where as there was a more uneven distribution between related and unrelated fish. As well Figure 2 looks at the way the fish forage for their food. Figure 3a looks at time spent but the subordinate fish in the more abundant feeding areas and their movements suggested that the presence of the more dominant fish restricted them. Figure 3b looks at their movement and foraging behaviours after the removal of the dominant fish. This lead to a significant increase in the amount of food the smaller fish were consuming as well they were foraging more beneficially once the dominant fish were removed. Figure 4a and 4b compare time spent and the number of larvae consumed when the dominant fish were both present and absent. It was

He was an unashamed beggar for beauty and an unsurpassed inventor of it. Here are some of his famous quotations from The Dramatic Imagination, We have learned that beneath the surface of an ordinary everyday normal casual conscious existence there lies a vast dynamic world of impulse and dream, a hinterland of energy which has an independent existence of its own and laws of its own: laws which motivate all our thoughts and actions. Our playwrights are attempting to express directly to the audience the unspoken thoughts of their characters, wo show us not only the patterns of their conscious behavior but the pattern of their subconscious lives. We accept motion pictures unthinkingly as objective transcripts of life, whereas in reality they are subjective images of life. On stage we shall see the actual characters of the drama; on the screen we shall see their hidden secret selves. The theatre is a school we shall never have done with studying and learning. A stage setting is not a background; it is an environment. I think [the theatre] needs also actors who have in them a kind of wildness, an exuberance, a take it or leave it quality, a dangerous quality. I am indebted to the great Madame Freisinger for teaching me the value of simplicity in the theatre. The sole aim of the arts of scene designing,
  • 7. Compare And Contrast Colerridge And Wordsworth Imagery has been one of the most pivotal movements in the cultural and intellectual history of English Literature. The comparison is not only among the works of their own rather it also includes the differences and traces of similarity with the works of others writers of different ages. The analysis is done by reading the actual text and interpreting the meaning by understanding the deep phrases hidden in the poetry. Different critics showed different aspects by their research. Some found out merits and some found out demerits in the works of Wordsworth and Coleridge. The merits includes uniqueness, healing power of poetry, and interpretation of their imagination for things whereas the demerits include slack of humour, lack of range and lyricism in their poetry. On a whole Wordsworth and Coleridge works have gained lot of interest and tempted many critics to write on their methods and strategies which they adopted in their work. A new chapter in the history of English poetry opened with the publication of Lyrical Ballads which were the results of Wordsworth and Coleridge friendship after the revolution. • 8. Etruscan Culture Internet Exploration Project 2 The Etruscan culture is quite a mystery to scholars. All that remains of this civilization are the tombs of their dead and the artwork that resides within these tombs. From what has been gathered and interpreted, the Etruscans belief in life after death was similar to that of the Egyptians. They believed death was a journey to afterlife, a physical location, and that the deceased would require the same type of goods and materials as in the world of the living. Therefore, within their tombs they would paint scenes of celebration, hunting and religious rituals, as well as beds, livestock, and even slippers. You see men standing in a boat on a river, fishing and hunting birds. Perhaps this is the telling of a fishing trip the deceased took part in in life. These paintings device the essence of the Etruscans culture in pursuit of easing the transition to afterlife. With scenes of good memories it may have been thought death wouldn t be so scary. With today s modern culture, death is a private event of mourning and grieving. We no longer as a community gather to celebrate the life of a late neighbor, instead this event is intended for family and close friends. We either bury our loved ones in a local cemetery or have their remains cremated and kept in an urn for viewing. The rituals performed by individuals in the event of a death have become superficial with a lack of meaning. The size of a headstone is only determined by how much money you have. The extravagance of the wake or any type of ceremony performed is determined by how much money you have. And for those who can t even afford a burial and opt for cremation, the elegance of the urn used to hold the ashes of your loved one is once again determined by how much money you have. Death has become an event of profit, for if you truly love your departed relative you ll buy the most expensive casket or the biggest

  • 11. The Youth Of A New Country 1.Grabbing people s attention with certain programs can be a hard task to achieve, especially if they don t know your language that well, or they are newcomers to your country. The way I would reach out to the newcomer youth in the Greater Toronto area would be creating a flier to post around schools and public places to promote the program, this way the more instances that people see the flier, the more interested in it they become. Another way of grabbing the attention of newcomers to pull them into coming to our program would be giving out packages explaining to the parents of the children what our program can benefit to their children who are being welcomed into a new country. This makes sure the child s parents are aware of the programs that the YMCA has for them, plus give them a chance to look over and contemplate if they believe it is going to be a good opportunity for their children. Lastly, I would develop a presentation, and go into the schools most populated with newcomer kids to introduce them to the types of programs that they can get involved in. I would even ask for it to be held outside of normal school hours so their parents would be able to sit in on the presentation so they are able to get the same information. There is one major barrier the I need to consider while developing ways to promote the YMCA programs. That barrier is communication. While most of the people who live in Toronto speak either English or French, immigrants also in the Greater
  • 12. Poem Vs Short Story The essential difference between a poem and a short story is the difference of scope. So, poems are short and they, briefly, tell you how the author is feeling about in a few words, while short stories could be written by the author at any moment with a plot, themes, character development, setting etc. The play Naked Lunch by Michael Hollinger is about a man named Vernon and a female named Lucy. They used to be a couple but they are no longer together. When they were sitting down to eat, Vernon started asking her the reasons of why she did not want to eat steak. He was making a big problem of it. Vernon finally ends up making Lucy eat the steak by yelling at her. Consequently, she ate the steak because she was scared. A play can be long or short, it all depends on what the author wants to transmit to his or her audience. The time is essentially important. In a play the characters need to talk each other to have an act; on the other hand, in short stories the narrator explains the situation, he is the one making and telling us the story. Most good stories start with a fundamental characteristics: the initial situation, the conflict, the climax, suspense, and conclusion. As in Naked Lunch by Michael Hollinger; I honestly thought that this couple would get back together since they were having diner, but eventually it ended up in an unexpected way. It was not the ending I expected honestly. Dickinson in the poetry focuses too much on death. It tells us that death can come to us when you least expect
  • 13. A Good Man Is Hard To Find Essay examples Flannery O Connor s short story collection A Good Man is Hard to Find has many elements of a southern gothic work. Images of ancient castles with sliding panels create suspicious themes and settings that lead the readers into the dark and gloomy world of the southern United States. With all of the violence, horror, and dismal surroundingspresented in O Connors stories there is too a moral messagegiven. Later gothic work did not always explain horror like this, holding little moral value to contrast their grotesque images (notes, November 1). We soon learn that the grandmother has made a geographical mistake thinking Georgia for Tennessee. Her ignorance starts a chain of events which will result in all their deaths: Brining the cat along even though she knew it wold not be allowed, forcing her will even when unsure if it was right (O Connor, 2, 11). The grandmother s uncertainty of geography could be read as mirroring her spiritual uncertainty. After the car crashes we see that the grandmother is self serving. She uses gender roles ( quot;you wouldn t shoot a woman quot;) and religious images to try and save herself and to make the Misfit to look well upon her (O Connor, 14 19). This plea seems very self serving. Why not ask quot;you wouldn t shoot a family, would you? quot; The argument of religion as a reason to be good is rejected by the Misfit (O Connor, 21). By dismissing Christ s history the Misfit also rejects the grandmother s self serving values.

It was used by Native Americans. They were also an early American trade to China. And often prized for its medicinal qualities. American ginseng are harvested and sold internationally. They were abundant inthe early days, but unfortunately they dramatically declined in today s world. Description American ginseng a slow growing plant. They were found within eastern deciduous forests of North America. Its life cycle begins as a seedling with single compound leaf(prong) and takes 3 8 years to produce a single cluster of flower. Then the flower can either fertilized itself or cross pollinate with another plant. There are two main pollinators of ginseng are the syrphid flies and the halictid bees. Plants that are pollinated have greater seed production. Right after pollination, berries will start to grow and each berry contain 1 3 seeds. • 16. Amish Family Legacy In watching the video, The Amish A Family Legacy I learned a vast amount of information about the Amish community. The Amish group of people live a more traditional lifestyle of past generations. The Amish lifestyle could be compared to the lifestyle of people who lived between the 1800 s and 1900 s prior to the Industrial revolution. The Amishdo not partake in the uses of modern technology. For instance, their means of transportation are horses and walking. Our current means of transportation are cars, motorcycles, buses, trains, etc. Another instance is that the Amish still practice agricultural farming with little no involvement of machinery. They also refuse to use chemicals refuse to use chemicals such as pesticides as we do to repel bugs from our crops. The Amish feel that our two different worlds should be isolated and distant from one another to keep their traditional way of life away from the modern world. The secluded community known as the Amish avoid contact with the outside word of their community. This leads to having their community limited in the means of communication to only each other. By limiting their means of contact with others, the Amish limit themselves to only one social circle. • 17. Effects of Television on Our Society Essays Effects of Television on Our Society INTRODUCTION Plato once, prophetically, posed a question that hints at the very core of this project. In philosophizing on the issue of entertainment and its various, sometimes questionable, sources he asked his fellow citizens to consider the following Shall we just carelessly allow our children to hear casual tales which may be devised by casual persons, and to receive into their minds ideas for the most part the very opposite of those which we should wish them to have when they are grown up? Shall we indeed? It is an ongoing debate. Plato obviously recognized the power stories have to shape who and what we are, and although some may be reluctant to admit to how much influence TV ... The work of communication theorist and professor, Stuart Hall, confirms that meanings are not inherently in people; rather they are derived from external sources, one primary source being the mass media to which we are repeatedly exposed; in our homes, in our cars, and on the job. Hall asserts the media serves the myth of democratic pluralism the pretense that society is held together by common norms, including equal opportunity, respect for diversity, individual rights.. TV sitcoms may not be intended to mirror our society, but they are perceived as such and the resulting ideology is a culture that at some level accepts what s being handed to them without examining the messages within. It is also a physical manifestation of Dorian Gray s soul. This is its own form of ekphrasis: the portrait is describing his morality. It is achieving the effects that Dorian s physical form cannot. This adds yet another layer of complexity; a soulis being described by a painting, which is in turn being described to the reader. A solid object shows us in simplified terms state of Dorian s moral consciousness. At first, it only has a touch of cruelty in the mouth (Wilde 65). Each time he views it, it becomes worse, until it is just a hideous face on the canvas grinning at him (Wilde 154) It is a ledger upon which all his sins are recorded, piling one on top of the other until its renders the figure unrecognizable. Instead, aestheticism said that art should be enjoyed purely for its beauty, and should not contain any purpose or meaning given by the artist (Quintus 559). Wilde was a strong proponent of this movement, and he incorporated many of its themes into his work. In the preface of The Portrait of Dorian Gray, Wilde starkly outlines his beliefs about art in a series of epigrams, saying, the artist is the creator of beautiful things. To reveal art and conceal the artist is art s aim (Wilde 2). Wilde clearly demonstrates his alignment with aestheticism and the appreciation of beauty. One major similarity between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is the lack of Classical Culture, characterized by darkness that caused the Middle Ages. Although the Renaissance was known as a rebirth , later historians explained that the rebirth of Greco Roman society in Italy had no Classical culture in it, which is why both the Renaissance and the Middle Ages are known as the dark age. Despite the fact that scholars do not believe that the Renaissance represented an abrupt or affecting break within the Middle Ages, there was still much stability in economic, political, and civil life. Italy, in both the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, was mostly an urban society, as an outcome of its commercial supremacy and the enlargement of its political system. Both time periods preserved ancient Latin culture, with the Renaissance re discovering the ancient Latin principles that were neglected at the end of the Middle Ages. 2) What harmed Italian trade and what factors allowed Italy to recover economically? (Pg. 327, World Regional Geography Concepts, Third Edition) The movie showed that both Jamal and Salim taking a bath in the river. The water was not clear yet the brothers, along with other people in the village, continued to bathe in the river. Another scene showed Salim gathering plastic water bottles and filling it up in from the faucet. After filling the bottles up with water he placed the cap on and put glue around the cap making it seem like they have not been opened before. In conclusion, this was a wonderful movie that portrayed some of the aspects about India covered in the book. It was my first time watching Slum Dog Millionaire and I would highly recommend a person who haven t seen it before to watch it. At the end of the movie, Jamal got to reunite with Latika and also win in the game of Who Wants to be a Millionaire . They finally got to share a moment of peace together since Latika waited for Jamal at the train station. Salim ended up killing himself since money took over his
  • 38. In the Intertidal Zone In the Intertidal Zone Ever wonder what fascinating creatures there are in the Intertidal zone? Or what kinds of adaptations they use? Almost all plants that are algae live in this incredible zone. Some other names for this amazing zone are the High Tide Zone, Mid Tide Zone, and Low Tide Zone. The Intertidal Zone is also called the shallow ocean zone, and has a lot of tide pools. This zone stretches from the surface to 660 feet, and you can find jellyfish, crabs, fish, and sea turtles. Adaptations are a species ability to change to its surrounding to survive. Even though it is hard living in the harsh, Intertidal Zone, there are three amazing organisms that survive these conditions using cool adaptations, and they are the purple sea urchin, the starfish, and the jellyfish. Although there are many fascinating animals that can call the Intertidal Zone home, the starfish, or sea star, is one that really stands out. To begin, National Geographic reports, most sea stars also have the remarkable ability to consume prey outside their bodies. Using tiny, suction cupped tube feet, they pry open clams or oysters, and their sack like cardiac stomach emerges from their mouth and oozes inside the shell. Swimming in the ocean, the stomach then envelops the prey to digest it, and finally withdraws back into the body. Because the starfish needs many ways to eat while in the Intertidal Zone, this is one example of a way that they can find food, because food is hard to find in the

When figuring out the costs for revenues you need to figure out how much the network will earn from all the scans done throughout the five year period. When configuring revenue associated with scans you need to look for total payments which are nineteen thousand and six hundred and ninety then multiple total payments by fifty weeks. This equals out to nine hundred and eighty four thousand and five hundred annually, then multiple the annual revenue by five years. The total scan revenue for five years comes out to four million and nine hundred and twenty two thousand and five hundred dollars. The next amount added to the revenues for the physician s network is the amount the MRI machine can be salvaged for which are seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The next equation to configure is the total revenue costs. How you configure the total revenue costs is by adding the total scan revenues and the salvage costs, which equals out to five million and six hundred and seventy two thousand and five hundred dollars. The final equation is to figure out the net revenues of the MRI machine and that is to take the total revenues and subtract the total expenses for five years. The total revenue is five million and six hundred and seventy two thousand and five hundred and you then subtract the total expenses, which is

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has assisted therapists in using in session behavior as clinically significant towards behavior change. CBT will assess our thoughts and behaviors which are important to designate triggers and assist in relapse prevention (Futterman, R. et al., 2005). Relapse prevention is comprised of seven strategic groups: psychoeducation, identification of high risk situations, coping skills, life style behaviors, self efficacy, dealing with relapse, and drug monitoring (Rawson, R. A., et al., 1995). Psychoeducation is comprised of addiction related topics with central issues revolving around addiction, brain chemistry, cues and cravings, addiction and family, a need for change, and comorbidity. This is typically taught in a class room or in a group discussion and may be further integrated during individual therapy sessions. Identifying high risk situations include identifying risk conditions (i.e. type of day, type of company, location, having money, boredom), behavioral warnings (i.e. compulsivity and impulsivity, stopping recovery, secondary drug use), cognitive warnings (i.e. recalling euphoric feelings, justification of drug use, drug dreams), and affective warnings (i.e. excitement and celebration, or depression and anger emotion previously associated with drug use). One area which criminology and police knowledge is interested in are those that have effected the Home Office and therefore the police service. The restrictions have had a far reaching effect to many areas of the policeservice, which will be highlighted at the beginning of the essay, however it will be concentrating on the specific aspect of the fearful reductions in PCSOs and neighbourhood policing and how that will effect 21st century policing. The essay will start by giving a brief summary of the cuts which have occurred since 2010. This will naturally lead onto a brief summary of the job of a PCSO and how they link in with Neighbourhood Policing, whilst assessing the benefits of them. It will then flow onto the possible effects which could happen to not only the police force but also to the public if the financial restrictions continue to occur. The 2010 government spending review implemented a programme of expenditure cuts that would reduce police funding by 20 percent in the four years from March 2011 to March 2015 (Rowe, 2013). In order to deal with these financial restrictions, the police have had to reconfigure provisions, for example closing small area stations and sharing specialist services with neighbouring police forces (O Neill, 2014). Inevitably, the restricted financial aid has also caused a lot of

Sentinal Fire Protection Ltd ( Sfp ) TITLE BLANK Summary Sentinal Fire Protection Ltd (SFP) is a company that design and specialises in the design and manufacture of fire detection and extinguishing systems for aircrafts. SFP have been tasked with carrying out tests on a new fire extinguishant named Agent H3. Due to the findings conducted in 1994 as per the Montreal Protocol (a protocol to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer), the commonly used fire extinguishing agent Halon 1301 ceased production. Halon 1301 is a CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) gas, which the Montreal Protocol concluded, had a tendency to significantly breakdown the earths ozone layer. The termination of Halon 1301 prompted the need for a CFC free replacement fire extinguishing agent. The replacement extinguishant, Agent H3 was tested by SFP under controlled conditions which simulated a bulk load cargo fire inside a compartment with a volume of 58m3. The effectiveness of Agent H3 was constantly monitored through thermocouples and data loggers. It s efficiency as a fire suppressant was based on two criterion set by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), the temperature acceptance criterion and the maximum time/temp criterion, with the outcome of a lower result being more effective. These results would then be compared with the known results of Halon 1301 being subjected to the same tests. The results concluded that Agent H3

Vasovagal Syncope, also known as fainting, neurocardiogenic syncope, and neurally mediated syncope, is a very common condition, occurring in roughly half of all people at least once within their life; three percent of the population develops it repeatedly. It is not a serious condition.(2) A vasovagal response involves a decrease in the volume of blood that is returned to the heart, which enervates the baroreceptors(2) in the sympathetic nervous system to increase the force of each contraction of the heart. Consequently, the opposing parasympathetic nervous system is alerted to slow the heart rate and dilate the surrounding veins and arteries. These responses of the nervous system cause the blood pressure to drop very low, causing syncope (loss of consciousness).(1) Most patients are young and healthy, although vasovagal syncope can occur in the elderly population that has preexisting cardiac problems. Extremely hot weather and blood alcohol levels are typical triggers. Some patients suffer from several, often attacks, while others may only experience them sporadically.(3) While standing, the blood tends to settle in the legs.

Thus, oceans engulfed the areas in between, raising the mountains on the seafloor, which raised sea levels higher, flowing onto the continents (Unknown, n.d.). Hence, the climate changed accordingly; for example, they may have experienced strong seasonal contrasts of temperature within large continental areas as well as some polar ice. Monsoonal effects were dominant on the continents and rainfall in low and mid latitudes was probably strongly seasonal, with arid conditions prevailing at low latitudes (Hallam, 1993). In the late Jurassic, scientists noted a considerable spread of aridity in southern Eurasia and attributed this to orographic effects (Hallam, 1993). Although there are no concrete conclusions regarding the climate during the Jurassic times, we do know that the forests flourished and the dinosaurs grew larger than ever before. Research has shown the flora distributions of the Jurassic period indicate a wide array of ferns, ginkgoes, conifers, bennettitaleans and cycads, many of which still exist today (Palmer, 2002). In the Jurassic life, the conifers were the most variegated of the large trees, and among those were the ginkgos. Ginkoes carpeted the mid to high northern latitudes, and podocarps, a type of conifer, were particularly successful south of the Equator (Unknown, n.d.). The ostensibly palm like cyads were very diverse and abundant; so much so that the Jurassic period could also be referred to as the Age of the Cycads

Global conflict will happen over this natural resource if nothing is done. Food production will not be able to keep up with the speeding population increase, and our overall economy will suffer. Due to the limited amount of fresh water in this world, and the demand going up due to populations, many people of the world are suffering or will be suffering. Alcoholism has had a tremendous impact on the human condition and its relationship to society. The evolution of alcoholism, its behavior and quality of life impact will be addressed; as well as treatments and fiscal impact in the literature review. Alcoholism is a complex disorder with many pathways leading to its development. Genetic and other biological factors are likely involved in the emergence of alcohol dependence, along with cognitive, behavioral, temperament, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Alcohol use patterns, including alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence, are familial in nature (cf. Heath et al., 1997; cf. Kendler, Heath, Neale, Kessler, Eaves, 1992; Hesselbrock, 1995). That is, similar styles of alcohol use and the presence of alcoholism are often found within the same family, running from parent to child and across multiple generations of biologically related individuals.
