What is a Comic Strip?
• Comic strips are sequences of cartoon drawings
in boxes or panels that can be used to tell stories.
• There are many different styles of comic strip, ranging from the
ones in newspapers to the superhero versions in comic books.
Features of a Comic Strip
• Speech Bubbles Speech bubbles are used to show that the
character is speaking out loud. They are
usually round or square shapes with a tail
pointing to the character’s mouth to show
they are speaking.
Features of a Comic Strip
• Action Words Action words are used to show
sounds that are heard in a comic
strip. These usually have a jagged
or thicker outline and the text used
inside is in capital letters and bold.
Writing Your Own Comic Strip
Things you will need:
Step 1: Plot
• Think of an interesting story with
a beginning, middle and an end.
• Write down your ideas for the
characters, settings and speech.
• Think about how many boxes you will
need and build your story around it.
Step 2: Script
• When you’re happy with the rough story, you can begin to build
a script. Use a separate piece of paper to write your script.
• Write your script as a sequence of frames.
Each frame should include a different scene.
• Think about what you
will draw in each frame,
who will be speaking
and sound effects.
Step 3: Comic Text
• Write all of the text in your comic first.
• Draw the speech bubbles
around your text (remember to
use speech bubbles from left to
right to help readers read the
text in the correct order.
• Remember to leave plenty
of room for your artwork.
Step 4: Angles and Shots
• Your comic will look more interesting for
readers if the shots and angles are varied.
• You could use very wide backgrounds, full body shots, half
body shots, close up angles, birds eye views and many more!
Step 5: Artwork
• Once you’re happy with the storyboard,
you can begin to draw the artwork.
• Begin drawing with a pencil and once you’re happy, use
colouring pencils or felt tips to make your comic pop!
• After you’ve finished all your drawings and
colouring, use a black pen to go over text or
around drawings to make your comic stand out.
• You have now completed your comic, well done!
