Present Perfect Tense
A verb is in the present perfect tense
when it expresses action which
began in the past and continues
in the present.

has/have + past participle of the
verb

Past Perfect Tense
A verb is in the past perfect tense when it
expresses action which is completed in the
past before another past action has
happened.

had + past participle of the verb
1. When I arrived at her house, she
had finished dinner.
2. She told us that the plane had left.
