This talk will provide an introduction to injection options of Envoy and then deep dive into ongoing Linux kernel work that enables injecting Envoy while introducing as little latency as possible. The servicemesh and the sidecar proxy model are on a steep trajectory to redefine many networking and security use cases. This talk explains and demos a new socket redirect Linux kernel technology that allows running Envoy with similar performance as if the sidecar was linked to the application using a UNIX domain socket. The talk will also give an outlook on how Envoy can use the recently merged kernel TLS functionality to gain access to the clear text payload transparently for end to end encrypted applications without requiring to decrypt and re-encrypt any data to further reduce the overhead and latency.

Who owns them, and how can we get them patched that fast? We’ll talk about our patching strategy of “Prevent, Detect, Fix, Monitor”, discuss the opensource tools available to help in each of those steps, and share lessons learned from our customers and our own patching program. Prevention narrows the funnel: standardized images, slimming images, separating build deps, allowlisting registries, and container promotion policies all help. On detection we’ll cover discovery, recent vuln detection advances, and opportunities to reduce noise. Fixing is about automating ownership discovery, fix sequencing, and release process. Monitoring glues it all together: prioritize fixes and investigate gaps to meet your SLO.

Talk held at DevOps Gathering 2019 in Bochum on 2019-03-13. Abstract: This talk will address one of the most common challenges of organizations adopting Kubernetes on a medium to large scale: how to keep cloud costs under control without babysitting each and every deployment and cluster configuration? How to operate 80+ Kubernetes clusters in a cost-efficient way for 200+ autonomous development teams? This talk provides insights on how Zalando approaches this problem with central cost optimizations (e.g. Spot), cost monitoring/alerting, active measures to reduce resource slack, and automated cluster housekeeping. We will focus on how to ingrain cost efficiency in tooling and developer workflows while balancing rigid cost control with developer convenience and without impacting availability or performance. We will show our use case running Kubernetes on AWS, but all shown tools are open source and can be applied to most other infrastructure environments.

Homer is an Open Source tool for real-time analysis and monitoring of VoIP and RTC platforms. It supports all the major OSS voice platforms, it's modular, easy to install and scales to carrier-grade infrastructures. Homer goes beyond collecting and correlating signalling and logs, and can also capture RTCP reports, QoS reports, and other events. Through an ElasticSearch endpoint, Homer supports BigData analysis of traffic. This workshop focuses on the deployment of a multi-node Homer framework with various approaches: bash installers, Docker containers, Puppet. We'll see how to configure Kamailio, FreeSWITCH (including the ESL interface), RTPEngine, Janus gateway (Events API), to collect signalling, RTCP reports, app-specific events and have them correlated and presented in a user-friendly GUI. For advanced users, we'll present the installation of captagent, the standalone capture agent, hepgen.js to generate test traffic, and a Wireshark dissector to have full visibility of data flows.

Cilium is open source software for providing and transparently securing network connectivity and loadbalancing between application containers and services deployed using Linux container management platforms like Docker and Kubernetes. A new Linux kernel technology called eBPF is at the foundation of Cilium, which enables the dynamic insertion of BPF bytecode into the Linux kernel. Cilium generates eBPF programs for each individual application container to provide networking, security, loadbalancing and visibility.

Sitecore deployments are traditionally relatively expensive due to the technological and architectural limitations. The introduction of a containerized hosting model is a game-changer in the Sitecore DevOps story. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes.
