The music that has been found is difficult to convert to modern music. The staff notation that we
use today did not exist in ancient Sumer. They utilized a system of words or intervals followed
by numbers to identify pitch. We had no idea what interval matched what pitch. It was decided
that we would base the intervals off the tones made from replicas of ancient instruments. The
Sumerian music system is based around the lyre (a type of portable harp) that had nine strings
just like contemporary harps. Each string was tuned a step above or below the next string. The

In other words, we do not know the mode. Melodies today are made by assigning each note a
specific pitch. Sumerian notation gives each note a certain interval followed by a number. This is
