Video accessibility refers to the process of removing barriers that prevent interaction with, or equal access to, audio-visual video content by any person who is d/Deaf, hard of hearing, blind, low vision, neurodivergent, or disabled, typically through the use of accessibility tools and technologies. WHAT IS VIDEO ACCESSIBILITY?
  • 5. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE CENTRALIZED VIDEO ACCESSIBILITY? All video accessibility needs, from live and recorded captioning to audio description, from transcription to localization, go through one central department within an organization.
  • 6. WHY SHOULD YOU CENTRALIZE VIDEO ACCESSIBILITY? Efficient, cost-effective, and thorough solution. Increases buy-in and budgets from executive teams. Makes accessibility testing and measurement more manageable and sustainable. Saves organizations time and resources. Helps ensure consistency and compliance.

  • 9. STEP ONE BUILD A FOUNDATION ● Make space for accessibility: hire or train a video accessibility expert for your organization. ● Create a video accessibility policy. ● Begin communicating your commitment to accessibility to the members of your organization.

EXAMPLE: CAPITAL ONE ● Had a decentralized business model. ● Had a lack of awareness and understanding of accessibility. ● Created a Digital Accessibility Team ● Now responsible for all digital accessibility across business operations and geographies By building a digital accessibility team, and building empathy and awareness within the organization, Capital One was able to build a centralized accessibility process!
  • 11. STEP TWO UNDERSTAND YOUR MEDIA CREATION CULTURE ● What does the flow for creation look like? How can it be improved for integration of accessibility services? ● Ensure visibility into video productions: who, where, and when? One of the biggest challenges in centralizing video accessibility is communication.
  • 12. ● Does your current video library include captions, transcripts, and/or audio description? Analyze what you currently have and ways to add accessible elements into your process. ● Prioritize your video library for the addition of CC, AD, and more. STEP THREE AUDIT YOUR PREVIOUS CONTENT Aim to meet at least a minimum level of conformance to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG 2.0).
